Chapter 330 Sebastian Personally Goes to Jabari
"Breaking news! At 3:15 PM today, a massive 7.0 earthquake rocked Nairoville, the capital of Malawa. The tremors were felt hundreds of miles away. Over seven thousand buildings have crumbled, and we still don't have any info on casualties. All communications are down, and the roads are a mess..."
Sebastian watched the news, thinking, 'Malawa, where Zach is. And Brooklyn too.'
"Dario! Get to Nairoville now!" Sebastian barked.
Dario nodded. "On it!"
As Dario turned to leave, Sebastian got up from the couch. "Take my private jet from Aucester. We need the fastest route. I have to get there ASAP!"
Dario quickly replied, "Mr. Kingsley, a regular flight takes thirty hours. Even with your jet, it'll still be at least fifteen."
'Wait, did Mr. Kingsley just say he's going too?' Dario thought.
He continued, "Sir, you can't take a long flight right now. Your heart can't handle high-altitude flying, and it will still take at least fifteen hours. A long flight could..."
"Stop talking and get ready!" Sebastian snapped.
'A devastating 7.0 earthquake has turned buildings to dust, and all communication lines are down. The only way to reach her is to go myself. No matter who she loves, I can't just lose her like this!' Sebastian thought.
"Sebastian, what are you doing!" Brian shouted, grabbing Sebastian's arm. "You can't go to Malawa in your condition!"
Sebastian's bloodshot eyes flared with anger. "I'll take full responsibility."
He grabbed his coat, clutched his chest with one hand, and walked out the door.
"Sebastian!" Brian's angry shouts fell on deaf ears.
Quinn rushed over, blocking Sebastian and grabbing his arm. "Sebastian, let me go with you!"
The northwestern part of Nairoville was the quake's epicenter. Luckily, the industrial and commercial areas weren't concentrated there. Unluckily, the population density was high.
When the rescue team arrived, they were met with bloodstains, human limbs, and a scene too horrific to describe.
Zach squeezed Brooklyn's hand. "Dr. Mitchell, it's time to really treat patients. You scared?"
Brooklyn had already put on her medical gloves and hung her stethoscope around her neck. "Scared? That word's not in my vocabulary anymore."
She had faced life and death before. Now, facing it again, she felt no fear, only calm and determination.
Zach smiled, and with the ruins behind him, his gentle smile was even more captivating.
Brooklyn joked, "Has anyone ever told you that your smile is pretty charming?"
Zach blushed. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Brooklyn didn't answer directly. She stepped over bricks and stones to check on the patient on the stretcher.
Zach watched her and smiled to himself. She wasn't the first to say that, but because it was her, he'd remember it.
"Pelvic fracture, comminuted fracture of the forearm, and a mild concussion. Get a CT scan immediately and prep for bone-setting surgery!" Brooklyn called out.
After diagnosing several patients, Brooklyn looked up to see Zach. He was half-kneeling on the ground, treating a little girl with a bloodied face. He had to lower his head, speaking gently like a father to his daughter.
Amidst the swirling smoke and dust, Brooklyn looked at him, smiled, then got back to work. "Intracranial hemorrhage! Dr. Davis, get this patient a brain CT scan, stat!"
The medical equipment at the earthquake site was limited, and many specialized devices couldn't be transported, delaying rescue efforts.
Brooklyn wiped the sweat from her face. "Dr. Carter, we're out of warfarin. All heart surgeries have to be postponed, but the patients can't wait."
"I've already requested it from the local medical center. It'll be here in an hour. How are the patients?" Zach's body was stained with blood.
"Two patients are in critical condition. I'm afraid they won't last an hour. The conditions here are too poor," Brooklyn said.
Zach nodded, "I know, but we can only wait for now. Don't worry, once the medicine arrives, I'll personally handle the surgeries."
'If he's personally handling it, I'm relieved,' Brooklyn thought.
The ruins shook violently again!
"It's an aftershock! Get to a safe place!" Zach ordered.
The stone slab under Brooklyn's feet suddenly collapsed, and one of her legs fell into a pit, causing her to fall towards the bricks.
"Brooklyn!" Zach wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her up, but his feet slipped on the stones, and his tall figure tilted, about to fall into the ruins.
With a flash of insight, Brooklyn pulled his hand in the opposite direction, using her weight to maintain balance.
In a life-and-death moment, they depended on each other to save themselves.
Zach tightly gripped her slender fingers, gasping in disbelief, "Brooklyn."
"If you can save me, why can't I save you?" she smiled radiantly.
"Of course you can!"
"Let's get out of here first."
With fingers tightly interlocked, they walked over broken stones and bricks, making their way to the tent area amidst the aftershock's tremors.
The crowd erupted in applause and cheers.
