Chapter 503 Discover the Truth of Death

Their eyes met despite the height difference, and in an instant, Kelly's gaze locked with Jake's.

Simultaneously, both of them exclaimed in surprise.

"It's you!"

"It's you!"

Kelly crossed her arms and stood in front of Jake. Despite her lack of height, her presence was undeniably stronger, a skill she had honed from Brooklyn's teachings.

Before Jake could say another word, Kelly quickly spoke up, "I never thought I'd run into you here. It's been a while, Jake!"

Her tone was dripping with sarcasm, and her eyes were filled with disdain as she looked at Jake, whose expression was already starting to twist.

Jake gave Kelly a faint smile, his lips curling in a sneer, as if they were lifelong enemies who would rather see each other dead.

"Kelly, I didn't expect to see you here either. What, have you become addicted to causing trouble in hospitals? Whether it's back home or abroad, you always seem to be around."

Kelly's lips curled in contempt, and she mentally cursed Jake countless times. "Three years apart, and I thought you'd have been kicked out of the hospital by now. I can't believe you're still wearing that doctor's coat. How do you have the nerve to show your face in that outfit? You should find a remote mountain to hide in and stop scaring people. People can be scared to death, you know."

Jake's brow furrowed deeply, but he didn't respond to Kelly's insults in kind.

"It seems your brain has improved over the years. You've learned to use your mouth. I thought Ms. Wilson only knew how to use her fists, a simple-minded brute. It looks like you've evolved over the past three years."

Damn it!

"Jake, say one more word, and I'll take you down today! Don't try to provoke me!" Kelly's fists clenched tightly, her eyes wide with anger.

From inside, Brooklyn's voice called out, "Do you two know each other?"

Kelly looked at Jake with disdain, "I'd rather have never met this scumbag. Brooklyn, how do you know him? This guy is the most incompetent doctor in the universe. He can't treat patients at all. You should stay away from him."

Brooklyn glanced at Jake, who was visibly pale with anger. It was rare to see Jake, usually indifferent to everything, actually showing emotion because of Kelly.

Jake, hands in the pockets of his white coat, entered the room and greeted Sebastian and Zach with a nod, ignoring Kelly. "Dr. Mitchell, how are you recovering?"

"Much better. I've adjusted the upcoming surgeries, postponing non-urgent cases. You and Dr. Warner can handle the rest. Anything else?"

Brooklyn spoke quickly and comprehensively, saving time on back-and-forth questions.

Jake had intended to ask about a few patients' surgeries, but she had covered everything. "Dr. Mitchell was very thorough. I understand. Nothing else. Rest well, Dr. Mitchell."

With that, Jake's stern expression returned quickly.

Kelly sneered, "Jake, aren't you supposed to be impressive? You ran out of words in front of my goddess, Brooklyn, didn't you? It's great that you're working under her now. Just wait, Brooklyn will make you suffer."

Jake ignored her, turned, and left the room, frowning as he exited.

After he left, Brooklyn asked, "Kelly, how do you know Jake? He hasn't been back from Britonia for long. What's your connection?"

Kelly gritted her teeth, "It was in Britonia... Oh, right, three years ago, I went to a fashion exhibition in Britonia. We stayed at the same hotel. One day, I found a stray dog that seemed sick. I ran into him, and he said he was a doctor and could help, but only if I took care of his goldfish in his room."

Brooklyn raised an eyebrow, "And then?"

Kelly's anger flared, "Three days later, he told me the dog died."

Brooklyn cleared her throat, "So did you attack him? Maybe throw something at him?"

Kelly scratched her head, "It wasn't my fault. He hurt the dog first. He's a doctor at the best hospital in London, and I didn't believe that he couldn't treat a dog. I got mad, took his goldfish to the hospital, and smashed it in front of his colleagues. Then I hit him with a dustpan."

Kelly's eyes shifted around the room before settling back on the group.

"Wasn't my fault, right?"

Brooklyn nodded sympathetically, "Not your fault? Whose fault then? Jake is a doctor for humans, not a vet. You smashed his beloved goldfish and hit him in front of his colleagues. Don't you know men value their dignity?"

Kelly stubbornly refused to admit her mistake, "I don't care. I think it's his fault. I'll never forgive a cruel doctor!"

Brooklyn sighed at Kelly's stubbornness, "Fine, don't forgive him. I'll find a way to get back at him for you."

"Wait, Brooklyn, how did you know it was his beloved goldfish?" Kelly hadn't mentioned that detail.

"If it wasn't something he cared about, would he have asked you to take care of it? He gave you his room key for three days. Do you think he was treating your dog all that time? He probably took the dog to a pet hospital and then handled his own business. Understand?"

Kelly thought for a moment, "That makes sense."

"So, you offended Jake, not the other way around. Think about how to make it up to him." Brooklyn leaned back, smiling at her friend.

Kelly was troubled.

Just then, Sebastian's phone rang, and almost simultaneously, Brooklyn's phone rang too.

Sebastian answered, "Speak."

Dario's voice came through, "Boss, the autopsy is complete. The coroner found traces of poison in the deceased's body, a potent toxin injected."

Meanwhile, Brooklyn heard from the accompanying doctor, "Dr. Mitchell, during the IV infusion, someone injected potassium nitrate into the drip. This chemical reacted with the original medication to create a lethal poison. That's what killed the patient."

Brooklyn bit her lip, her eyes filled with sarcasm and anger. "Someone is trying to frame me! Thank you, Brycen."

After hanging up, Sebastian's call continued.

"Boss, I've already had the surveillance footage checked. A segment was cut out, indicating the perpetrator was prepared. We can't determine if the culprit is inside or outside the hospital."

"Release the news to the media. They know how to write it." Sebastian's voice was icy. He wanted to strangle the culprit who dared to act under his nose, targeting his wife.

"Yes!"

Kelly was stunned, trying to grasp the situation.

Zach spoke up, "The culprit knew two crucial pieces of information: the patient's medication and that potassium nitrate would react lethally with it. It must be an insider or someone with inside help."

Brooklyn and Sebastian nodded in agreement. "Indeed. This patient's case is unique, and the medication was specially formulated. Only a few people knew the details. We can trace the culprit."

Sebastian nodded, "The police have been notified. They'll investigate soon. Everyone will be scrutinized. Any mole in Aucester Hospital will be rooted out."

Zach sighed, "I didn't expect that even after Piper left, there would still be such resilient pests inside. It's disheartening."

Brooklyn's heart was heavy. Besides Piper, there was also Samantha in Aucester Hospital. If Samantha were involved, her fate would be the same as Piper's.

Some people never learn, no matter how many warnings they get.

Zach checked the time, "I'll go on my rounds. Rest well. Let me know if you need anything."

"Okay, you go ahead."

Kelly watched Zach leave, then whispered to Brooklyn, "Brooklyn, having Dr. Carter around must feel great, right? I can't believe he's still so good to you after all this time."

Brooklyn glanced at Kelly, then at Sebastian, making Kelly quickly shut up.

Sebastian checked the time, "The police should be here. I'll go check."

Brooklyn knew he was giving them space, so she smiled and nodded, "Okay."

Sebastian left the room and approached the elevator. As he was about to press the button, the doors opened, revealing a man in black and a woman in red. They stared at Sebastian for several seconds.

Finally, the man spoke, "Sebastian, you're here."

Sebastian's lips curled into a cold smile. "What are you doing here?"

Donny adjusted his tie, "I heard your wife is unwell and hospitalized. My wife and I came to visit her."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed. "No need. She needs rest and quiet. I'll convey your regards."

The woman inside the elevator smiled, "Sebastian, we can't just not visit. We're family. I brought flowers for Brooklyn. I hope she likes them."

Sebastian glanced at the lilies and yellow roses in her hands, his eyes cold, "Brooklyn doesn't like lilies or roses. She's asleep."

With that, Sebastian stepped into the elevator, pressed the button for the first floor, and the doors closed, leaving no room for further conversation.
