Chapter 99 Transformation
After a busy day at work, Brooklyn leaned against the railing of the hospital balcony, recalling Zach's words.
A hint of sunset floated in the western sky. Brooklyn's hand was in the pocket of her white coat, and the other hand held a freshly poured hot coffee. She was quietly watching the sunset.
She suddenly remembered the years she spent studying in the United States, shuttling between the library, laboratory, classroom, and dormitory every day, living a busy and fulfilling life. She didn't even have time for sorrow back then. Although she was tired, the days felt like walking on clouds, so comfortable, so carefree, so simple.
But now, everything had changed. The time of youth was drifting further away. Exhaustion and weariness were written all over her face, and Brooklyn hardly found any traces of innocence left in her.
Next, it was the first meeting with Sebastian.
Meeting him was like derailing her life, chaotic and uncontrollable.
If only life could stay as it was when they first met, how wonderful would that be?
He was still the clean-cut man in white, striding past her with determination.
She just needed to treasure this memory as a normal encounter, a fleeting glimpse of memory.
What would have happened if there were no subsequent events?
Brooklyn took a sip of her coffee, the bitterness tingling her tongue as she realized she had forgotten to add sugar.
She remembered that he never added sugar to his coffee, enjoyed its true bitterness, sipped it slowly, and only drank Blue Mountain coffee.
The freshly ground coffee exuded a fragrant aroma.
What was he doing at this moment?
Did he occasionally think of something?
"Dr. Mitchell? Why are you alone here?" If it weren't for someone suddenly interrupting Brooklyn's thoughts, she wouldn't know how long she would have been lost in her thoughts.
Brooklyn looked up and recognized the pregnant woman whose husband was ill.
She smiled slightly. "Nothing much, why are you here?"
The pregnant woman held a paper bag filled with things. "I asked several people to find out where you were. Finally, I found you. Thank you for that day. My husband is out of danger now. His condition is stable. I really appreciate it."
Brooklyn had been tormented by rumors and insults for two or three days, so when she finally heared a warm-hearted sentence, it brought a smile to her face. "That's good. You're pregnant. You should rest well."
The woman smiled and nodded. "Dr. Mitchell, my parents came from our hometown to see my husband. This is a specialty I asked them to bring. I hope you'll like it."
She handed the paper bag to Brooklyn, her innocent smile coming from the heart.
Brooklyn couldn't refuse, so she took it. "Thank you. I will definitely enjoy it."
The pregnant woman smiled and then hesitated. "Dr. Mitchell, I do not believe in those rumors. Dr. Mitchell, you are a good doctor and definitely wouldn't do anything wrong!"
Brooklyn didn't expect that the pregnant woman was actually intent on helping her clear her name.
"I've already posted what you said to me on Twitter. Although it's insignificant, I hope it can help you. Dr. Mitchell, keep it up!" The pregnant woman clenched her fist, cheering Brooklyn on.
Brooklyn nodded. "Okay, I'll keep it up! Expectant mothers need to keep it up, too!"
As Brooklyn carried the specialty back to the office, Sienna and Ellie looked on enviously.
Opening the paper bag, the scent of cake filled the air. "There's too much. I can't finish it alone. I'll share some with you."
Brooklyn rummaged through the boxes and found a clean paper bag, then divided the cake into three portions.
"Wow! Dr. Mitchell, I wish someone would bring you specialties every day in the future!"
Ellie said, "No need to share so much, right? Take it back and enjoy it with your family. It's not that much."
Brooklyn sealed the bag again. "I live alone. Who would I share it with?"
Sienna giggled. "Then I'll dig in."
Brooklyn rubbed her neck. "I'm off work, see you tomorrow."
Ellie hurriedly urged her to pack up. "Hurry, if Piper makes you work overtime, it will be miserable."
"Piper? You mean Mr. Rivera?"
"Exactly! She's only been in charge for a few days, but her reputation is already out there. Now the whole department is afraid of her. At this rate, I'll be the one to be mobbed next," Ellie said miserably.
Brooklyn picked up her bag and left work, slowly driving back to her place.
She hadn't been back for many days, making the house feel even more desolate. In the living room, the flowers in the vase had withered long ago. She had forgotten to close the windows, and with the wind and rain in the past few days, some books had gotten wet and then dried, wrinkled, and curled up.
It seemed like nothing had changed, but some things had indeed changed.
