Chapter 332 Zach Got Provoked
Folks from Libertya showed up, and it was the follow-up crew from the hospital. As soon as they spotted their old buddies, the expat medical staff rushed over to give them big hugs.
But Brooklyn's eyes were glued to Piper, who was striding towards them in a white coat, holding a black umbrella.
'Piper, Megan's cousin, from the famous Rivera family. Can't believe she actually came here. And it's not just her status that's surprising. I'm gonna get back at her for faking those medical reports and lab results,' Brooklyn thought.
"Dr. Rivera, you're really here! What a surprise!" Brooklyn grabbed an umbrella, took a few steps forward, and greeted her.
To everyone else, it looked like they were on good terms.
Piper's red lips didn't show a hint of a smile. Under the black umbrella, her pristine white coat and flawless makeup stood in stark contrast to Brooklyn's muddy appearance.
"Dr. Mitchell? What are you doing here? You weren't on the expat list this time, were you?" Piper flashed a sweet smile, mischief dancing in her eyes.
Brooklyn wasn't in the mood for small talk. "Dr. Rivera, you might need glasses. And hey, do you mix up diagnostic reports too? Like, diagnosing a healthy person with a terminal illness."
Piper played dumb. "Oh, come on, Dr. Mitchell, don't throw accusations at me like that."
"If my blood splashes on you, it's serious. After all, I'm an AIDS patient." Brooklyn's voice had a sharp edge, and she leaned in, almost whispering the last part into Piper's ear, making it extra cryptic and sarcastic.
Piper's eyes narrowed, and she gritted her teeth. "Brooklyn, you're nuts!"
Brooklyn straightened up, her tall figure standing firm and slender. Even though her clothes were soaked by the rain, she kept her usual confidence and pride. "Piper, mark my words, you'll pay for your actions. Whether I'm crazy or not, you'll find out soon enough. Focus on your patients for now to make amends. Oh, and by the way, my patience has limits, especially with my condition in its final stages. Don't push me."
With that, Brooklyn spun on her heels and made her way back to the ward, ready to dive back into her duties.
"Hey, Dr. Mitchell, you might wanna change your outfit first. Heard another plane's landing from Libertya, but this time it's not military, looks like it's a private one," a nurse chimed in.
Brooklyn was busy checking a patient's heart rate and didn't pay much attention. "Just focus on your job. Whether it's a private plane or an aircraft carrier, our duty is to save lives."
After making sure the patient was stable, Brooklyn put down her stethoscope. When she turned around, she saw Piper and Zach chatting.
Piper kept smiling, while Zach's face stayed neutral.
Brooklyn didn't think much of it. She rolled up her stethoscope, placed it in a dry spot, and grabbed a cup to take a sip of water.
Meanwhile, the plane continued its journey through the pitch-black night.
"Mr. Kingsley, due to the weather, the plane can't go full speed. But we should reach our destination in about an hour," Dario reported.
Sebastian nodded and glanced at the wedding ring on his finger.
This ring was one of a kind, featuring a perfectly cut diamond from South Jabari. Even though their wedding was simple, he hadn't skimped on the rings.
The ring on Brooklyn's hand was called "United in Heart and Spirit," just like his.
Sebastian hadn't worn this ring for three years. Today, he wore it specifically for her, as a reminder.
Zach slowed his steps, gathering the courage to approach Brooklyn. He took a deep breath and called out with a warm smile, "Brooklyn."
Brooklyn put down her cup. "What's up?"
Zach looked a bit uneasy. He handed her a towel. "Dry your hair. It's not good to keep it wet."
She laughed, a bit dazed from being so busy. "Okay, thanks."
She roughly dried her hair and shook her head a few times, then hung the towel on a rack. Noticing Zach was still there, she asked, "What's going on? Speak up."
Zach hesitated for a moment. "Can you come outside with me for a bit?"
"Is that all? Alright, where to?"
Grabbing umbrellas, they stole a moment from their hectic schedules and headed to a food storage warehouse. The conditions were too limited to find a better spot.
"Brooklyn, gotta be real with you. Seeing you virus-free brings mixed feelings. I'm glad you're safe and all, still able to enjoy life. But deep down, it's hard knowing you might go back to him."
Zach's honesty struck a chord, leaving her feeling a tad guilty yet utterly stuck. "It's not as simple as you think. There's still a big gap between him and me."
Zach's hand paused before finally resting on her shoulder. "If you really love him, then love him well. It's clear he cares about you too."
Brooklyn studied his face. "Zach, what's gotten into you today? After talking to Dr. Rivera, are you upset?"
