Chapter 257 I Need to See You
At the Turner family's villa, in Megan's room, Megan's hand trembled with excitement as she clutched the phone. With a sinister smile, she adjusted her flowing waves with her crystal-tipped nails and said with a gleeful tone, "Piper, you're truly something else. Brooklyn is going to have to divorce now, whether she likes it or not. That bitch!"
Piper, her eyes locked on the computer screen displaying Brooklyn's profile, was mesmerized by the impressive résumé.
She thought, 'It is a shame, though. Soon, Brooklyn 'll be nothing but a fallen woman, her reputation in tatters regardless of any truths she uncovers.'
"Not only that," Piper continued coldly, "but before she leaves the Kingsley family, we need to make sure Sebastian absolutely despises her, feels hopeless, and never looks back."
Megan glanced at the clock, her bare feet sinking into the plush carpet as she stretched her long, alluring legs. "There are ten hours left until my father's birthday party. I'm really looking forward to tonight."
"So am I," Piper replied.
Megan clenched her teeth lightly. "Piper, Brooklyn probably thinks she's dying and doesn't dare tell Sebastian. Who do you think she'll turn to? Your college buddy is the perfect backup boyfriend. I've got people watching her. If Sebastian catches them hugging and crying together, it'll be quite a scene."
That afternoon, Brooklyn took a half-day off.
In the underground garage, Zach waited. When Brooklyn arrived, he opened the car door for her. "I'll drive."
She nodded, fastening her seatbelt. "Let's go to Aucester Enron Cemetery." Zach was momentarily confused but quickly realized she intended to visit her deceased parents.
Aucester Enron Cemetery was the most prestigious burial ground in the area, where the prominent and wealthy of Aucester rested. But no matter how grand the cemetery or how tall the gravestones, what did it matter?
The hot afternoon breeze felt eerily cold on her skin.
Brooklyn, holding a bouquet of white lilies, walked slowly with Zach through the rows of headstones until they reached her parents' graves.
It was Zach's first time seeing Brooklyn's parents. In the photo, her mother looked young and strikingly similar to Brooklyn, while her father's kind eyes and warm smile spoke of a gentle demeanor.
Brooklyn knelt and placed the lilies gently on the grave. "Mom, Dad, I've come to see you."
Looking at the photographs, Brooklyn broke down in tears. "Dad, Mom, I'll be with you soon. Did you miss me? Do you hope for us to be together again soon?"
As Brooklyn wept uncontrollably, Zach hesitated for a moment before pulling her into his embrace. His warm hands gently stroked her back. "They wouldn't want to see you cry. Their greatest wish is for you to find joy in every day, understand?"
Brooklyn clung to him, sobbing, "What should I do? What can I do? Someone tell me!"
Zach held the fragile Brooklyn tightly. She seemed to have withered overnight, her eyes sunken, her whole being a shadow of its former self.
"Leave Brooklyn in my care," Zach vowed. "I promise to protect her with my life and ensure she never suffers."
He then wrapped his arm around Brooklyn's, saying, "Brooklyn, entrust every moment of the future to me. I won't let you lose in this journey."
Brooklyn remained silent, unsure if she was accepting or ignoring his words.
Unbeknownst to them, a shadow lurked unseen, spying from a distance.
In MBK Group, CEO's Office, Sebastian glanced at his wristwatch. The time was ticking away. He picked up the phone on his desk. Whitney Fields, his chief secretary, answered on the other end. "Mr. Kingsley."
"Cancel all appointments after five this afternoon."
"Understood."
"Order nine hundred ninety roses and have them placed in my trunk before seven."
"Yes,Mr. Kingsley."
Roses were a classic choice, but she preferred gardenias.
"Also, arrange for five hundred twenty gardenias."
"Got it, Mr. Kingsley."
Sebastian hung up the phone and returned to reviewing the day's documents. With the end of the month approaching, reports were piling up again. He set the files aside and opened a drawer.
Inside lay a velvet box, nestled quietly. Sebastian's tense features relaxed slightly. He was determined to make amends, piece by piece.
Tonight was just the beginning.
His phone buzzed suddenly. Sebastian closed the drawer.
He glanced at the video sent to his phone, and his eyes grew icy, like a serpent falling into a frozen abyss. A wave of cold swept over him.
He thought, 'Brooklyn and Zach—how could this be?'
He fought to contain his rage, his menacing gaze skimming over the first few seconds of the video before he set his phone down.
He suspected Megan was behind this, knew her intentions all too well, and couldn't rule out that Brooklyn and Zach might indeed be involved in something illicit.
Sebastian tossed aside his pen, his fingers pressing against his aching forehead.
He thought, 'Brooklyn has taken him to her parents' grave—what on earth is she trying to accomplish?
'Damn Brooklyn! What are you playing at?'
He slammed the folder down onto the mahogany desk, his frustration boiling over. Shoving his chair aside, he strode to the floor-to-ceiling windows.
He thought, 'Am I right to hold on, or am I making a monumental mistake?'
Dario pushed open the door, bowing respectfully. "Sir, should I inform Mrs. Kingsley to try on the dress?"
Sebastian's eyes were tightly shut, his voice a low growl trying to suppress his fury. "Yes."
He thought, 'If she doesn't love me, should I keep going?'
"Yes, Mr. Kingsley."
Dario reached for his phone to call Brooklyn, but Sebastian stopped him. "No, I'll make the call."
Dario withdrew, leaving the expansive office feeling suddenly empty, like a battlefield abandoned by its foes, the tension palpable.
Sebastian took a few seconds to calm himself, deciding to give their relationship one last shot, even if it meant risking everything for a chance at redemption.
The phone rang in the quiet room, his deep voice cutting through the silence.
"Where are you? I need to see you."
