Chapter 50 Can't Deal with You?
Megan now wielded the power to command Brooklyn, a power contingent on the secrecy of her relationship with Sebastian. However, should their clandestine affair be exposed, she would inevitably find herself in a compromising position.
Brooklyn's gaze was laden with contempt as she addressed Megan, "To ensure your child's safe birth and your continued reign as a top star, you'd best behave. If you provoke me, I won't hesitate to tarnish my own reputation. Can you afford such a loss?"
Could she afford to lose?
This seemingly innocuous question sent a chill down Megan's spine. Brooklyn had nothing to lose, but Megan was a different story. If their relationship disintegrated completely, she stood to lose her career. Worse still, she hadn't even succeeded in making Sebastian truly fall for her.
Before Megan could formulate a counterattack, Brooklyn swiftly stepped into the elevator, leaving Megan with the sight of a resolute figure clad in white.
Just as Megan was changing her clothes in preparation to leave, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
"Darling, are you okay? How are you holding up? Did that bastard Sebastian mistreat you?"
The moment the call connected, Kelly's anxious voice filled the line. Brooklyn grabbed her bag and retorted, "Why are you only concerned about me now? Where were you when I was in trouble?"
"Sorry, sorry. I just got home. My dad has been arranging endless dinners for me. It's so irritating!"
As Brooklyn approached the hospital entrance, she responded sarcastically, "So, are you calling to check up on me or to complain? I can't tell if you're genuinely concerned about me."
"Of course, I care about you. I have to care! You're at the hospital, right? I'm coming to pick you up now. I'll treat you to dinner. Whatever you want to eat, you can have it! You can eat to your heart's content and even take the food home. Are you satisfied?"
Kelly's enthusiastic offer managed to dispel Brooklyn's earlier frustration. She feigned annoyance and grumbled, "Fine. I'll give you twenty minutes. I'm hungry."
"Great! Mrs. Kingsley!"
After ending the call, Brooklyn leisurely exited the hospital. The area outside the outpatient building was deserted at this hour. Reflecting on the group of people who had apologized earlier in the day, Brooklyn couldn't help but draw a deep breath.
She had just settled down on a bench to wait for Kelly when her phone vibrated again.
Upon seeing the caller ID, Brooklyn rose from the bench. It was a call from Kingsley Villa!
A call from the Kingsley family was never a good sign, and it had been so for the past three years without exception.
Brooklyn's brow furrowed. The phone felt like a hot coal in her hand. Taking a deep breath, she reluctantly answered the call.
"Hello..."
The voice that responded was not the one Brooklyn expected. It was Jennifer, her tone sharp and biting, a stark contrast to the gentle greeting. The anger in her voice was so potent it felt like a physical blow to Brooklyn's ears.
"Brooklyn, what is your intention?" Jennifer demanded.
Taken aback, Brooklyn tried to suppress her rising emotions, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Mom, what's wrong?" she asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her.
"What's wrong? You tell me what's wrong!" Jennifer retorted. "You just don't want the Kingsley family, Sebastian, and Megan to be happy, do you?"
At the mention of Megan's name, Brooklyn's mind raced. Is this call about Megan? Had she complained to Jennifer about what happened just now? Brooklyn felt a pang of injustice, but she forced herself to remain calm. "Mom, I don't understand what you mean," she said, her voice betraying none of her inner turmoil.
"Don't pretend to be innocent!" Jennifer spat. "I used to only know that you couldn't have children, but now I know that you have such a wicked heart. Megan is pregnant with Sebastian's child. The child she carries is a descendant of the Kingsley family. I know you can't wait to harm her and kill the baby in her belly! A woman with such a treacherous heart doesn't deserve to be my daughter-in-law!"
The harsh words stung Brooklyn, her heart aching as if it had been physically wounded. She stood frozen, her mind a whirl of confusion. Why would Jennifer accuse her of wanting to harm Megan's baby? And why was Jennifer so quick to believe Megan's words over hers?
"Mom, I never had any intention to harm her, I just found out..." Brooklyn started, but her explanation fell flat, lacking the conviction she desperately needed.
"You know in your heart whether you had such thoughts!" Jennifer interrupted. "Megan has designated Aucester Hospital for her prenatal check-ups. You are a doctor, and Megan's examinations were assigned to you! If anything happens to Megan and her baby, I won't let you off the hook!"
Before Brooklyn could respond, Jennifer had already hung up. The abrupt end to the call left Brooklyn trembling, her mind reeling. Jennifer had entrusted Megan's care to her? The idea was ludicrous.
Staring blankly at her phone, Brooklyn was jolted back to reality by the blare of a car horn. She looked up to see a silver Porsche screeching to a halt beside her.
