Chapter 470 The Boss Lady Arrives
Brooklyn had just finished a surgery and was peeling off her blood-stained gloves when her phone buzzed. Exhausted, she leaned against the wall and took off her glasses to rub her eyes before answering, "Hey, what's up?"
Sebastian was striding down the hallway from the conference room to his office, waving off his assistants, secretaries, and board members. They quickly scattered, understanding his signal. Dario, who knew Sebastian well, grinned knowingly and headed to the secretary's desk.
"Not much," Sebastian replied, walking confidently into his office. He nodded at Whitney, signaling for a cup of coffee, and then closed the door behind him.
Brooklyn closed her eyes, a warm smile tugging at her lips. "Mr. Kingsley, you're always so busy. Hard to believe you'd call just to chat."
Sebastian stood by the window, gazing out over the bustling city of Aucester. "Lawrence sent the contract directly to me. Mrs. Kingsley, looks like you'll need to come over."
Brooklyn raised an eyebrow. "Why send it to you? This is my deal with him. Is Lawrence looking for a middleman?"
Sebastian chuckled, his voice smooth and seductive even over the phone. "Lawrence clearly doesn't know how to do business. My fees as a middleman are pretty steep."
Brooklyn rolled her eyes and checked the time. If she headed to MBK now, she'd make it just in time for dinner. "So, Mr. Kingsley, do you charge the client or the contractor? Because if it's me, I can't afford it."
Whitney entered with a fresh cup of coffee just as Sebastian sat down, a rare, warm smile spreading across his face. She had never seen him smile like that—warm yet slightly aloof, serene yet happy. It was a look she couldn't quite decipher.
Sebastian took a sip of his coffee, savoring the rich flavor. "Lawrence just lost half his assets. Are you sure you want to squeeze more out of him?"
Brooklyn chuckled. "Alright, no more jokes. I'll come over now. Have the lawyer meet us there. Where's Lawrence?"
"For such an important deal, both parties and their lawyers need to be present," Sebastian said. "But don't rush. You have the upper hand."
"So, Lawrence is already waiting? Mr. Kingsley, you not only charge high fees but also make your clients wait. I'll never hire you as a middleman."
Sebastian checked his watch. "I treat everyone differently. You're my lifetime VIP, so it's different for you," he said, opening his laptop. "You just finished surgery. Wait at the hospital; I'll send Owen to pick you up."
"How did you know I just finished surgery?"
"Personally, I'm your husband. Professionally, I'm your boss. Knowing your schedule isn't surprising."
Brooklyn sighed. "You win. I'll wait for Owen."
"Good. I have a video conference to attend. See you soon."
"See you."
Brooklyn was about to change into her lab coat but decided to wear her own clothes since she was heading to see Sebastian. Just as she finished changing, her phone rang again.
Seeing the caller ID, she smiled and answered, "Hey, how's it going?"
Bianca was surrounded by stacks of documents, some neat, some messy, forming small mountains. "Still sorting through it. There's a lot of old stuff, but I found something interesting you might want to know."
"Oh? There aren't many things that interest me, Bianca."
Bianca flipped through a document, her red lips curving into a smile. "Ten years ago, your father and Brian had a joint project. Don't you want to know what it was?"
Brooklyn's eyes lit up. Her father and Brian had a project together? The Mitchell Group and MBK had always been at odds, and Brian had always looked down on companies like the Mitchell Group. Why would he collaborate with them?
"What project?"
Bianca summarized, "Brian and your father co-founded a charitable children's hospital in Rainbow District. Guess which one?"
"Rainbow District's children's hospital? But there's no charitable hospital there now, only a few public ones. I'm sure of it."
Bianca frowned. "That's the strange part. The hospital only existed for three years. It closed a month after your father passed away, and now there's no trace of it. I couldn't find any information online. Does that seem normal to you?"
Brooklyn had never been involved in her father's work, so she knew nothing about this. "Is the old hospital building still there?"
"There is, but it's now an office building. The current owner seems to have no connection to Brian, as if Brian sold the hospital."
"That doesn't sound like Brian. You handle other matters; I'll ask Sebastian about this."
Bianca rubbed her temples. "Brooklyn, speaking of your good husband, I have a question. Where did he find that flirtatious guy for the Mitchell Group? Brandon, I think. He's been hitting on all the female employees. Can you ask Mr. Kingsley to get rid of him?"
"Really? Brandon is Sebastian's trusted assistant. They've known each other for years and have a good relationship. As for his personal behavior, I've heard a bit about it. But Bianca, you're the big boss at the Mitchell Group now. Why worry about him? Just give him enough work to keep him too busy for anything else."
Bianca thought for a moment and then slapped the table. "Alright, I won't hold back."
In Owen's car, Brooklyn pondered the children's hospital. It seemed off that Brian, a proud and profit-driven man, collaborated with her father on a charitable.
The car soon arrived at the MBK International Building. Looking up at the towering structure, Brooklyn couldn't help but marvel at Sebastian's wealth.
Owen respectfully handed her a pair of large black sunglasses. "Mrs. Kingsley, Mr. Kingsley asked you to wear these before going in."
"Alright."
It was probably to avoid being recognized and causing a scene. The thought warmed her heart.
The VIP elevator took her directly to Sebastian's floor. Brooklyn's tall, slender figure stepped out, greeted by a gold-plated sign reading "Chief Executive Officer."
The reception area was filled with beautiful secretaries. Sebastian sure knew how to enjoy life.
Whitney, sensing the importance of the newcomer, noted that she had used the VIP elevator and entered Sebastian's office without an appointment. "Oh my God! That's Mr. Kingsley's wife!"
Linda covered her mouth in shock. "Mrs. Kingsley herself! Is she here to check on him?"
While the secretaries gossiped, the real action was inside the office.
Lawrence and his lawyer sat nervously on the couch, looking much older and more haggard than before.
"Mrs. Kingsley, you're here," Lawrence said, standing up quickly.
Brooklyn nodded. "Mr. Turner, sorry to keep you waiting."
"No problem at all. So, Mr. Kingsley, shall we…"
Sebastian walked over, taking Brooklyn's hand. "Tired?"
Ignoring Lawrence, he led Brooklyn to his chair, gently massaging her shoulders. "What would you like to drink? Tea or coffee?"
Brooklyn looked up at him. "Your place, your choice."
Sebastian nodded, pleased. "Tea it is. I'll take you to dinner later."
"Alright."
While they discussed drinks and displayed their affection, Lawrence, who had been waiting at MBK for four hours, could only watch and wait.
Whitney brought in a cup of tea just in time to see Sebastian massaging his wife's shoulders. She managed to keep her composure, but it was a close call.
Brooklyn sipped her tea, suddenly remembering the others in the room. "Honey, Mr. Turner has been waiting. Let's sign the contract first."
"Is he in a hurry?"
Sebastian looked directly at Lawrence.
"No, no, not at all. Mrs. Kingsley, you must be tired. Please, take your time," Lawrence said, forcing a smile, though he was worried they might change their minds.
"Did you hear that, dear? Mr. Turner isn't in a hurry," Sebastian said with a mischievous smile only Brooklyn could understand.
Brooklyn smiled back, whispering, "Mr. Kingsley, you're so devious."
"It depends on the person. Sometimes kindness is just enabling bad behavior."
Oh, she got it. Sebastian thought she was being too kind to Lawrence and wasn't happy about it.
Brooklyn turned to Lawrence. "Mr. Turner, I thought this was our deal. Why are you at MBK? Don't you trust me? Or do you think I can't handle it?"
Lawrence's face turned pale, and he stood up, shaking. "No, no, that's not it. I just thought since you and Mr. Kingsley are so close, it wouldn't matter who I dealt with."
"Oh? If that's the case, you should have gone directly to him. Why involve me? It seems my presence is unnecessary."
Lawrence's legs trembled, and he almost knelt. "That's my mistake. I didn't think it through. Mrs. Kingsley, please don't take it the wrong way."
Brooklyn sipped her tea, smiling slightly. "And if I do?"
