Chapter 224 Five Years Ago
The next day, after leaving the hospital, Brooklyn headed straight to work in the cardiology department. The workload was already piling up.
However, that wasn't the main issue.
When she left the ward, doctors and nurses started whispering behind her back. "Can you believe she's Sebastian's wife, the president of MBK Group? No wonder she's been so aloof. I thought she was just cool, but now I see it's because she's got someone powerful backing her."
"Right? Sebastian's the richest guy in the country. His fortune is insane, and he'll inherit the Kingsley family business. I'm so jealous."
"But is Megan really the mistress? I heard Dr. Mitchell is a workaholic. What man can stand being lonely, especially someone like Sebastian, surrounded by beautiful women every day?"
"Looking at the magazine photos, Megan seems more suited for Sebastian. A handsome man and a beautiful woman. While Megan's a noble lady, isn't Dr. Mitchell's background too humble?"
Brooklyn walked straight to the elevator, ignoring the gossiping nurses. They shut up as she passed.
She pressed the number 4 and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. Luckily, she was alone in the elevator; no one else dared to get in.
'Looks like my peaceful days are over.' she thought.
"Good morning, Dr. Mitchell."
"Morning, Dr. Mitchell."
Nurses greeted her as they passed, and Brooklyn nodded back. Once they were out of earshot, she could hear them gossiping again.
Just then, Samantha walked over and said sarcastically, "I was wondering who had such a strong presence. Turns out it's Mrs. Kingsley. My apologies."
Brooklyn didn't even look at her, going straight to the locker room. Samantha followed, continuing, "Brooklyn, don't think I'll be scared of you just because you're Sebastian's wife. Whether you're the legitimate wife or the mistress is still up in the air."
Brooklyn lazily turned to her, "Dr. Scott, instead of wasting time attacking me, why not study more to avoid making basic mistakes next time?"
Samantha gritted her teeth, "Do you think you're so great? Everyone knows you have your status because the hospital wants to please Sebastian! What are you so proud of?"
Brooklyn found her childish and boring. She closed the locker room door, changed into her white coat, and sighed at her reflection in the mirror, the bandage on her neck still visible.
'I wanted a simple life, but it's anything but simple.'
Back in her office, Sienna and Ellie stood up awkwardly. "Good morning, Dr. Mitchell."
"Morning. Have you done the rounds? I put the patient in bed 23 on a liquid diet for a week. Is he following it?"
Sienna stammered, "Yes, he's been cooperative, and his condition has improved a lot."
Brooklyn nodded, "Thanks, Dr. Adams. Sorry for the trouble."
"No trouble at all."
As Sienna and Ellie sat down, Brooklyn noticed John's desk was completely cleared, like he never existed. Shaking her head, she picked up the medical records and prepared to go to the ward.
"How could this happen!"
Ellie suddenly screamed, holding her phone like it was a grenade, looking at Brooklyn in horror, "Dr. Mitchell, this can't be true, right?"
Brooklyn frowned, "What's wrong? Did a patient's condition worsen?"
Sienna was also staring at her phone in shock, "God, this issue isn't over yet?"
Brooklyn furrowed her brows, seeing a newly-released news article on the phone screen.
[Mr. Kingsley's Marriage in Turmoil Again, Megan is the Victim.]
The article was a long, exaggerated piece detailing how Megan and Sebastian fell in love five years ago, with many photos of them together. It claimed that they were planning to marry three years ago, but Brooklyn returned from Averlake and ruined their relationship. It accused Brooklyn of befriending Megan to get close to Sebastian, acting like a sister while secretly seducing him.
The words were harsh and critical, unbearable to read.
Brooklyn's brows furrowed tightly, gripping the phone to the point of crushing it.
Sienna and Ellie didn't dare to speak anymore. A barrier seemed to form between them and Brooklyn, separating them by class.
She was now Mr. Kingsley wife from the upper class. No one would dare to provoke her easily.
In that instant, Brooklyn felt true loneliness.
She put down her phone, "I'm going to do the rounds."
Her calm expression masked the turmoil inside. 'Who on earth fabricated this news? Megan?!'
"So, Megan and Mr. Kingsley were a couple five years ago, and Brooklyn came between them three years ago!"
"And it was a betrayal among close sisters! She deceived everyone!"
"Brooklyn is the mistress?!"
In front of the cardiology nurse station, a few people huddled together, whispering more boldly.
