Chapter 342 Going to Libertya
The next day, Scarlett was dragging after barely catching any sleep. She had to whip up a strong cup of coffee just to keep her eyes open before breakfast.
This breakfast felt off. The moment she sat down, she could sense something weird in the air, and Leon seemed to be dodging something.
Scarlett couldn't hold it in. "Dad, Mom, if you have something to say, just spill it."
Diana took a sip of her milk and smiled gently. Both of them, even in their fifties, were in great shape. Leon, especially, loved outdoor adventures and was super fit. But today, they seemed to be struggling with their knives and forks.
"Scarlett, you've been engaged for almost half a year now. Any plans to tie the knot? You're not too busy lately, so why not find some time to get the marriage certificate? You can figure out the wedding details later." Diana said, and Scarlett suddenly lost her appetite.
'Marriage? I wear Kevin King's ring, but I hesitate to commit,' Scarlett pondered, delaying the certificate despite the grand ceremony. 'Kevin is great, ticks all the boxes, but I can't commit. Something feels off,'
Seeing the change in Scarlett's expression, Leon couldn't push her any further. He patted the back of her hand from a distance, his smile warm and almost doting. "If you don't want to get married, then don't. I'll talk to Kevin when he returns from his trip in Yuropea. You both can sort it out then."
Feeling like she dodged a bullet, Scarlett let out a sigh of relief.
Concerned by Scarlett's expression, Diana wheeled herself closer, taking Scarlett's hand. "Do you not want to get married?"
Scarlett said, "I'm not sure yet. I just feel like something is missing, and we're not quite there yet for marriage."
Diana gently tapped Scarlett's cheek with her finger, as if soothing a child. "If you're not sure, then give yourself a break. Go somewhere else and think it over. I was anxious before I got married too. After all, marriage is a big deal and can't be taken lightly. Make your decision when you're calm. I don't want you to do something you'll regret."
Scarlett obediently smiled and even affectionately rubbed Diana's cheek. "Okay! There's an academic conference in Liberty in a couple of days. I'm thinking of heading there for the conference and staying for a few days. How about this?"
Hearing it was Liberty, Leon tightened his grip on his knife and fork, chewing his food slowly and with difficulty, as if something was weighing on his mind. "Scarlett, you are going to go to Liberty? Haven't you always been reluctant to go there?"
"I didn't want to go before, but now I want to take a look. When I come back, if I've made up my mind, I'll get married and won't avoid it anymore," Scarlett said.
"Alright then. Have you been having nightmares lately?" Leon asked.
At first, Scarlett had nightmares every night, waking up in a fright and drenched in sweat.
Leon had hired many doctors to take care of her 24/7 at home, and she had finally gotten through the tough times.
"It's fine now. I haven't had a nightmare in a long time," Scarlett fibbed to avoid worrying them.
'Liberty, what kind of place would that be?' she wondered.
Scarlett made her decision hastily and packed even more hastily. With just a small suitcase containing her documents and a few clothes, she headed to the airport. "Lisa, I'm going to Aucester first. You and Cory can leave tomorrow. The conference is the day after tomorrow, so just make sure to arrive before then."
"So soon? Didn't you not want to go?" Lisa asked.
"I changed my mind. The plane leaves in an hour. If any issues come up in the next ten hours, try to handle them yourself. If you can't, email me," Scarlett said.
"OK! I'll book the hotel now and send you the address. Someone will arrange to pick you up."
"No need, I'll handle it myself."
'We've been her assistants for almost a year, and this is the first time Scarlett wants to book a hotel on her own, without even arranging for a driver.' Lisa thought.
