Chapter 248 Can't Let Brooklyn Bear It Alone
When Brooklyn awoke, it was already past 3 PM on the same day. Zach had returned to the hospital after she had cooled down. So, when she opened her eyes, she found only Kelly beside her.
"Darling, you're finally awake. You had me scared out of my wits, you know! Don't ever pull another stunt like this, okay?" Kelly exclaimed, hugging her fiercely and scolding her.
Brooklyn furrowed her brow and sidestepped Kelly's tear-streaked face. "I'm not dead yet. You're getting a bit ahead of yourself with the tears, aren't you?"
"I was so scared for you. You're being sarcastic the moment you wake up? How do you feel now? Any discomfort?" Kelly ran her hands all over her body, seemingly in search of injuries.
Brooklyn was scratched all over by Kelly's clutches. "I'm fine. What could possibly be wrong with me? I'm perfectly fine."
Kelly's indignant tone made it seem like the only solution was for Brooklyn to marry Zach. "You know, your Dr. Carter risked his life to save you. He climbed in through the window on the sixteenth floor, can you imagine that?" Kelly recounted the events, concluding with a sigh, "Brooklyn, you're really something else. On the one hand, you lose your company and your home overnight; on the other, a man like Zach is willing to risk his life for you. I was almost moved to tears."
After hearing Kelly's account, Brooklyn fell into a long silence. She propped herself up on the bed and sighed. "Looks like I owe him a debt I can never repay."
Kelly's large eyes darted back and forth, scrutinizing her face as if it held the answers. "Let me tell you, if you don't marry Zach, I'll…"
"Kelly, I just woke up, you're not about to faint me again, are you? Mitchell Group has a new chairman, and I don't even know who it is now. Besides, MBK Group's project in Pugetland is in trouble, and he has his own problems to deal with. We don't have the time or energy to worry about romantic entanglements."
Kelly admonished, "I don't care! In a woman's life, career and the like are trivial. What's most important is to marry a man who is attentive and caring. Got it?"
Brooklyn, looking a bit haggard, shrugged. "Wait until you're married to say that. I'm going to Mitchell Group."
Kelly smirked as she pressed her shoulder, "Over my dead body! Dr. Carter told me you must rest at home today. No going anywhere."
"Are you listening to him or to me?"
"I listen to doctors!"
"You traitor!"
Kelly's mischievous grin widened, "Guess I'm a traitor then. All I care about is ensuring your safety and health. I don't worry about anything else. Just stay here and I'll check on the soup in the kitchen."
"Are you saying you can make soup?"
"Not me, Dr. Carter started it before he left, and I'm just in charge of checking if it's ready. With a man like Dr. Carter, what are you hesitating about? Your phone seems to be broken as well. Decide whether to fix it or get a new one once you're feeling better."
Brooklyn thought, 'The phone is broken, too? Fate seems to go all out when it wants to toy with someone.'
Brooklyn kept quiet, obediently leaned against the headboard, what was she thinking about such a good man like Zach?
She was thinking about Sebastian, far away in Averlake.
In Averlake, Pugetland, Dario looked at the time, nervously standing in the lobby of the Pugetland government building. He didn't know how to explain everything to Sebastian when he came out.
The events that occurred in Aucester for two days and nights were too unexpected, and Sebastian was still in the dark about the entire process. Dario thought, 'Should I suppress the news or...
'If Sebastian finds out about Brooklyn's ordeal in Aucester, he will definitely fly back to tear those people apart. But the situation in Pugetland hasn't been resolved, and Sebastian has to stay. To hide it or to tell the truth?'
Dario's heart was in turmoil, filled with melancholy.
After a full round of negotiations with the relevant departments, Sebastian finally extricated himself from the whirlpool of questioning.
A tall, slender figure in black emerged from the elevator, walking briskly towards him against the light. It seemed that a day of audits, questioning, and investigations had not the slightest effect on his elegance. Before his eyes, Sebastian still maintained that air of noble, icy detachment.
He held a final document from the authorities in his hand, and his brow and demeanor suggested that he had dealt with the situation smoothly.
Dario quickly walked up to him to greet him, bending over slightly to say, "Boss, how did it go?"
Sebastian handed him the document and spoke with a slightly hoarse voice, evidently he was a bit tired. "There was no problem with the project; rather, someone was trying to make a profit during the construction process. The relevant personnel here will be responsible for the investigation. We can resume work latest by next week."
Dario nodded, "So, are we going to the construction site now to see the situation? With you visiting personally, it'll give the workers a sense of confidence."
Sebastian replied simply, his piercing eyes looking ahead, and with a steady gait, he started down the steps at a rapid pace, "Give me my phone."
During the period of interrogation, he had been cut off from any form of contact with the outside world, and his phone had been in Dario's custody.
Dario had never lied to Sebastian before, but now, he leaned over, lowering his voice guiltily, "The phone is out of power. I'll charge it and give it back to you right away."
He thought this would prevent Sebastian from contacting Brooklyn, but Sebastian glanced down at him for a moment with his usual indifferent gaze and said in a deep, firm voice, "Give me yours, yours probably have power, right?"
Dario dared not deceive Sebastian again, "Boss..."
With Sebastian's keen perception, any change in Dario's expression would not escape his notice. He coldly reprimanded, "Hand over the phone!"
Dario dared not disobey, handing Sebastian his phone, the screen showing several missed calls, but none from Brooklyn.
Sebastian unlocked the phone, quickly finding Brooklyn's number and dialing it.
But the phone call was met with a message that the recipient couldn't be reached.
