Chapter 251 Heart-Wrenching Pain
Brooklyn bit her lip as she pulled a plate from the stack and started washing it slowly. "Dr. Carter, you really don't have to do this."
"I know what I'm doing. Don't worry about it. He's not in the country, and you don't have any other family here. It's only natural for me to take care of you. Once he's back, I'll step aside."
"Dr. Carter..."
"Look at the water splashing all over you. Go take a break. I'll be done in a bit."
His bone-deep gentleness, his care that seemed to reach every strand of her being, was almost too much for Brooklyn to handle.
Kelly must have left at some point because the small house was now just the two of them, and Brooklyn felt the tension in the air.
"Dr. Carter, my phone is broken. I need to go to the repair shop."
"I'll come with you. You're in no condition to drive, and besides, if you take your car, are you worried the repair shop might try to scam you?"
He smiled, taking her bag into his own hands.
At the repair shop, the technician said the internal issues would take three days to fix. Zach said directly, "Let's just get the SIM card out."
Five minutes later, Brooklyn found herself holding a new phone.
She hardly spoke the entire time.
Zach handed the phone to her. "It's just a $500 phone. Don't look at me like that. The SIM card is in there, and you can use it right away. As for your old phone's data, we'll transfer it once it's fixed."
Brooklyn opened her mouth. "I'll transfer the money to you. If you don't want it, then I don't want the phone."
Zach suddenly smiled. "Alright, Dr. Mitchell's point is valid."
As soon as the new phone was turned on, a flood of messages came through—more than twenty, all from Sebastian.
Brooklyn avoided Zach's gaze, scrolling through the texts. Sebastian was back and asked where she was, why her phone was off, and if she was alright.
Through the screen, she could almost feel his warmth.
But further down, a message from Jennifer waited: [Brooklyn, your time's up. The Mitchell family is a disgrace, and the Kingsley family can't afford to be embarrassed. End things with Sebastian quickly, or I don't want to see you again! And don't think you can escape by ignoring my calls! Haha, Sebastian isn't in Aucester, but I am. Pack your things and get out of the villa before he comes back. Find a place and live your own life—just don't let him find you.]
The cold threat and sarcasm stung as if she'd been slapped in the face.
Her intention was to leave before Sebastian got back, but unfortunately, she hadn't managed to do that. Now, he had already returned.
"Dr. Carter, I'm afraid I won't be able to go to the hospital with you. I'm really sorry."
Her hesitation was clear, and he understood. "He's back, isn't he? I'll keep my promise. Would you like me to take you to him?"
"No need. You go on to the hospital. I'll be at work this afternoon."
She thought, 'Am I trying to avoid Zach because I want to see Sebastian as soon as possible?'
But Brooklyn stood by the roadside, motionless, trying to keep her distance, afraid that her heart might stray before the marriage ended.
The first call on her new phone was from Sebastian.
She stared at the flashing name for a long time before answering.
"Brooklyn, you finally answered. Where are you? I'm coming to find you. No hiding, no running. Tell me where you are."
His voice, smooth like a fine wine, felt as though it had been a lifetime since they'd last spoken. Three days had felt like three years.
Suppressing the turmoil in her chest, she answered coolly, "I'm out."
Hearing her voice brought him a wave of relief. Contacting her was the best news he'd had.
"Tell me where you are. I'll be there as soon as I can."
His "as soon as" was truly immediate. Within minutes of giving him her address, a sleek Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of her. Brooklyn was sitting on a bench, watching as polished leather shoes emerged from the car, followed by Sebastian's breathtakingly handsome face.
He strode through the greenery and was by her side in no time. Without a word, he crouched in front of her, taking her hand and cradling it like a precious gem. "I'm back."
His words, "I'm back," came with a warmth and tenderness that wrapped around her like a soft blanket.
Brooklyn managed a tired smile, her lips curving up. "Welcome back."
Sebastian's brow furrowed. "What's wrong?"
Brooklyn struggled to find her voice, the harsh demands from Jennifer pressing on her mind. Yet, Sebastian was the love of her life, and choosing between them felt like tearing her heart in two.
"It's nothing. Did you finish what you needed to do?" She hesitated but ultimately chose to dodge the issue.
Hearing this, Sebastian's anxiety eased. "Yes, it's done. I'm sorry about Mitchell Group. By the time I found out, it was too late."
The mysterious man wasn't Sebastian after all, and she felt a pang of disappointment, actually wishing it had been him.
"It's in the past. And besides, maybe it's for the best for the Mitchell Group." She intentionally jabbed at him.
Sebastian chuckled softly, a wry smile on his face. He held her hand more firmly. "Even if Mitchell Group were still in Seraphina's hands, I wouldn't use it to force you into anything. I'm here to show you my sincerity."
Brooklyn tried to pull her hand away, but he tightened his grip.
Opening the car door with one hand, Sebastian gazed at her with tender eyes, as if he wanted to envelop her in endless waves of softness. He spoke gently, "Darling, let's go home."
