Chapter 17 Bandaging
Brooklyn was abruptly roused from her deep slumber by the harsh ringing of her phone. With a groggy arm, she fumbled around in search of the intrusive device, and in an instant, she was wide awake. She bolted upright in bed, a sudden twinge in her knee causing her to wince, her delicate features scrunching up in pain.
A sharp pang of clarity hit her, and Brooklyn's eyes darted around the room. She turned her head, only to find the space beside her devoid of Sebastian's presence.
A thought crossed her mind, 'He can't stand me, why would he share a bed with me?'
Her initial panic swiftly morphed into a wave of disappointment.
Brooklyn ran her fingers through her hair in frustration, snatched up her phone, and discovered an incoming call from the on-duty doctor.
"Dr. Mitchell, are you awake? The patient in Bed 22 is experiencing arrhythmia. Please come quickly."
The patient in Bed 22 had been a resident of the hospital for over two months, suffering from severe coronary heart disease. The onset of arrhythmia could easily trigger a myocardial infarction, making the situation dire.
"Administer 5 milliliters of lidocaine intravenously to stabilize the patient's emotions. If there's no improvement after ten minutes, administer another 5 milliliters. Remember, keep the patient calm and prevent them from becoming anxious. I'll be there immediately."
"Okay! I'll get everything ready!"
After ending the call, Brooklyn disregarded the throbbing pain in her knee, slipped on her shoes, and climbed out of bed. As she opened the bedroom door, she found Sebastian sprawled out on the long sofa in the living room, fast asleep.
A sharp, clear pain pierced her chest.
Brooklyn descended the stairs slowly, her gaze lingering on the sleeping Sebastian. In his slumber, he had shed his usual indifference, his softened expression making him look incredibly handsome.
"He's so handsome, yet he always chooses to wear such a cold expression," Brooklyn murmured to herself. She was about to grab her bag and leave when she glanced down at her attire and froze.
She thought to herself, 'It's inappropriate to go to the hospital dressed like this. I'm such a fool. If I had noticed earlier, I could have changed into a different outfit upstairs. Now I have to climb the stairs again.'
Reluctantly, Brooklyn hopped back up the stairs. Despite her best efforts to minimize the hopping motion, she inadvertently woke Sebastian. He furrowed his brows at the sight of Brooklyn's leaping figure, the warm light streaming through the French windows casting a long shadow against the opposite white wall.
A lazy smile spread across Sebastian's face.
Brooklyn quickly located a suit she had left behind three years ago, which still fit her perfectly. She hurriedly washed her face and brushed her teeth, then prepared to descend the stairs once more.
Just as she was about to take the first step, she noticed Sebastian standing silently in the hallway, his gaze leisurely taking her in, a look of disdain on his face.
Brooklyn bit her lip and thought, 'He's so despicable! He's really annoying!'
Sebastian, however, paid no mind to her hopping movements, his attention focused on her clothes. The beige dress, its hem just grazing her knees, was a stark contrast to the long black skirt she usually wore, and it accentuated her beauty.
Moreover, he remembered that he had bought her this outfit back then.
Brooklyn struggled to descend the stairs, while Sebastian casually observed her, his hands tucked into his pockets.
"Mr. Kingsley, please let me pass," she said.
He thought to himself, 'This woman must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.'
"Where are you going?"
"To the hospital."
Sebastian's gaze instinctively dropped to her knee.
"I'm a doctor, and there's a patient who needs my care, so I have to go to work." Brooklyn didn't wait for his response and limped past him, heading towards the door.
Sebastian raised an eyebrow at her mention of "going to work". "You can't hail a taxi here."
Brooklyn paused in the process of putting on her shoes, realizing, 'Oh no, I forgot about that. To hail a taxi, I would have to walk a distance, and people who live here rarely need to take a taxi. But how can I walk such a long distance in my current condition?'
"Thank you for reminding me." Brooklyn slipped on the flat shoes that had been sitting in the shoe cabinet for three years. They were her only pair of shoes. She stood up and pushed the door open.
Sebastian watched her with a scowl, "Do you want to become a cripple?"
Brooklyn didn't answer. She simply turned her back to him and walked out slowly.
He thought to himself, 'What a foolish woman!'
Sebastian quickly followed her. Brooklyn struggled to support her body with one leg as she walked, her stubbornness infuriating Sebastian.
"Brooklyn! What are you trying to do?!"
