Chapter 69 Dealing with Kids

She never expected Sebastian to answer the phone so quickly; she had just dialed the number. Since the call was connected, she had to speak up even though she felt nervous.

"Is there something you need?" Brooklyn hadn't even started speaking when Sebastian's voice came through the earpiece. The sound of papers rustling in the background indicated he was still working.

Taking a deep breath, Brooklyn stared at her toes, fiddling with the corner of her white coat. "I've reviewed Megan's prenatal report. Everything seems fine."

In his office, Sebastian, with a pen in hand ready to sign, paused at her words. "Got it."

Brooklyn suddenly didn't know how to continue. Should she just hang up like this? Or wait for him to hang up first?

As Brooklyn remained silent, Sebastian also didn't speak. It seemed like he had forgotten about the call. Only the sound of him writing and something clinking together could be heard.

In the silence, Sebastian's steady and long breaths were audible, synchronized with his heartbeat. She could even discern the rhythm of his heartbeat, steady and strong.

"Anything else?" His voice broke the silence again after half a minute, catching Brooklyn off guard. Suddenly, an idea popped into her mind, "Oh, Quinn came to the hospital today for a check-up and to prepare for school applications."

Sebastian's eyebrows raised, his fingers flat on the desk as he leaned back lazily in his chair. "I know. Anything else?"

Brooklyn's head drooped lower, she replied, "Nothing else."

Sebastian's dark eyes flashed with a hint of sharpness. He thought, 'Was she calling him just to talk about others?' He felt displeased.

Upon hearing her reply, Sebastian promptly hung up the phone.

It was so sudden that Brooklyn didn't even react. In her memory, whenever she called him, he was always the one to hang up first without exception. This realization made her uncomfortable.

Unbeknownst to Brooklyn, from the moment she picked up the phone, Quinn had been standing at the staircase, watching her closely through the shadows and potted plants.

With his hands in the pockets of his ripped jeans, Quinn witnessed Brooklyn's expression shift from anticipation to nervousness, from hesitation to disappointment. Although he didn't know who was on the other end of the call, the fact that Brooklyn went through such complex emotions in just two minutes indicated a close relationship.

Quinn thought, 'Was it Sebastian?'

Brooklyn took a deep breath, pocketed her phone, and her gaze fell on the bandage on her knee. She furrowed her brows. How long would this injury continue to bother her?

"Dr. Mitchell, are you having lunch?" Quinn's voice echoed through the hallway as he approached her with his tall and slender figure, exuding a sunny disposition.

"Why haven't you left yet?" Brooklyn asked in puzzlement.

Quinn scratched his forehead, "I wanted to leave early, but the efficiency of the doctors in your hospital is too low, delaying my time. Since it's lunch time now, Brooklyn; let's have lunch together!

"I'll go to the staff cafeteria. You can go out for lunch on your own."

"Don't be like this, Brooklyn. Can't we have a meal together? I'm not extorting you. I'm treating you, okay?" He grinned, still carrying a hint of childishness on his face.

Quinn was only twenty years old, the age of playfulness.

Brooklyn didn't want anyone to see her associating with the Kingsley family. Many people still didn't know Quinn's identity or her relationship with Sebastian. But if their identities were discovered in the future, being too close to Quinn would surely attract unwanted attention and affect both her and Sebastian negatively.

Suddenly, the word "cuckold" flashed through her mind.

No matter how embarrassed Sebastian made her feel, she didn't want him to suffer any damage to his reputation. Didn't she care about him? Deep down, she was desperately trying to protect him.

"It's okay, I'll go to the staff cafeteria. I'm busy in the afternoon, and you have plenty of time on your hands. I have work to do and no time for small talk."

"Brooklyn, if you treat me like this, my heart will break." Quinn pleaded.

As Quinn continued to pester Brooklyn, a white figure emerged from the elevator. The tall and imposing figure in the white coat exuded a sense of awe. It was Zach.

The moment Zach stepped out of the elevator, he saw Brooklyn arguing with a casually dressed young man. Walking over to her without even sparing a glance at Quinn, he said to Brooklyn, "Sorry for keeping you waiting. Let's go."

Both Quinn and Brooklyn turned to look at the speaker.

Quinn replied, "I already made plans with Dr. Mitchell. If you want to have lunch with her, maybe next time."

Unlike Brooklyn, Zach wasn't wearing a name tag, but from his attire and demeanor, Quinn knew this doctor was extraordinary. Yet, he didn't hesitate to speak up.

Zach smiled and then turned his gaze toward Brooklyn. "Dr. Mitchell, we'll have to reschedule our discussion about the previous patient."

"No need, we can do it now." With that, Brooklyn brushed past Quinn's shoulder and walked towards the staff cafeteria.

Zach nodded at Quinn, his demeanor resembling that of an adult dealing with a child.

Quinn was not pleased!

Even after the two had disappeared around the corner, Quinn continued to glare in annoyance.
