Chapter 98 The Woman He Wants
George nodded, allowing Zach to continue.
"If the hospital sacrifices a highly skilled doctor due to a farce of unsuccessful investigation, it will definitely undermine the doctors' enthusiasm and make them lose trust in the hospital.
"Furthermore, Ms. Turner has already issued a statement stating that she felt unwell due to mistakenly eating something, and this matter has nothing to do with Dr. Mitchell."
Zach tried to salvage the situation, leaving Piper speechless. She gritted her teeth but dared not confront him. "What should we do now? The cardiology department is already in chaos."
Zach looked down at her with a smirk on his face. "Ms. Rivera, the cardiology department is under your jurisdiction. If there are problems, don't ask me what to do. Tell me, what would you do?"
The three of them looked up at Zach simultaneously. His meaning was clear just now. Piper was the deputy director, and this was her responsibility. If she couldn't handle such a small matter well, there was no need for her to continue as the deputy director.
The farce of the dismissal came to an end, and Brooklyn and Zach's abnormal relationship was further confirmed and extended, deepening the hostility between Brooklyn and Piper.
Piper stepped in to calm the commotion in the ward and walked away resentfully towards the VIP ward.
When Brooklyn finished her work, it was already lunchtime.
Her phone vibrated as she was about to go for lunch.
It was Zach's call.
Zach said, "Dr. Mitchell, do you still want to refuse to have lunch with me now? I just saved your job."
Brooklyn felt uneasy. Going would risk being seen, leading to more misunderstandings, and not going would be ungrateful for Zach's help.
Brooklyn replied, "Alright."
Brooklyn changed her clothes, grabbed her wallet, and left the hospital. When she arrived, Zach was already there.
The lunchtime crowd was bustling. Brooklyn emphasized on privacy several times, and they moved to a more secluded spot on the second floor.
Zach handed her the menu. "Since you're treating, you choose. Today, I'm just here to eat."
Brooklyn opened the menu without hesitating and carefully looked through it. "What do you like to eat?"
Zach interlocked his fingers, resting his elbows on the table, looking at Brooklyn. A strand of hair fell on her cheek when she lowered her head, making her look charming.
Zach responded, "I'm not picky. Just order what you like."
Brooklyn continued, "Mr. Carter, since you're not picky, I'll just choose randomly."
Zach said, "This isn't the hospital. You don't need to address me like that."
Brooklyn's slender fingers stopped at the picture of a steak. "So, Dr. Carter, how about a steak?"
Zach chuckled. "It seems calling me by my name still has a long way to go."
Without skipping a beat, she continued, "How do you like your steak cooked?"
Zach replied, "Just order what you like."
"Dr. Carter, I'm treating you to lunch today. Firstly, I want to thank you for helping me through several difficult situations recently. Secondly, there's something I want to clarify with you."
The waiter quickly brought the steak, interrupting her words.
"What do you want to tell me? Are you going to tell me that you're already married, and as a married woman, you're asking me to keep my distance?" Zach saw through her thoughts in one go. Although Zach's words were direct, he always had a smile on his face, so she didn't dislike him.
"Yes, that's exactly what I wanted to tell you," Brooklyn replied.
Zach poured her a glass of red wine. "You don't need to rush to distance yourself from me. Also, I like you. I won't cause problems for you."
She took a sip of the wine. "So, are you planning to continue?"
Zach shrugged. "Why not? Although you're already married, I'm not. I have the right to pursue the woman I like, and I want to ensure that I can make you happy. Instead of letting you suffer in an unhappy marriage, I'd rather be the third party and save you."
Brooklyn couldn't help but laugh. "Dr. Carter, you're quite good at joking."
She knew he was serious, but she couldn't take it seriously.
"Whether it's a joke or not, I'll prove it to you." He held the fork, not rushing to eat the steak.
"If I'm not mistaken, for a long time to come, you will avoid me, evade me, and avoid direct contact with me, even ignoring me. But it's okay, I can accept it. You can continue living your life without considering my feelings." He slowly savored the steak.
Brooklyn was speechless.
Zach said, "I believe that the earth is round. What belongs to me, I will always get in the end."
