Chapter 555 Revealing Jake's Secret
Jake brushed some dust off his clothes and checked on Benedict again. "Professor Harrington, you sure you're okay?"
An elderly man taking such a hard fall should be affected somehow, right?
Benedict glanced back at Jake, his eyes filled with an enigmatic glow. "Why'd you save me? You should've let that car hit me after I found out your secret. Tell me, why'd you save me?"
Jake shrugged. "I don't know what you're talking about, Professor. Since you're fine, here's the file."
He handed the file to Benedict, straightened his clothes, and turned to leave.
Benedict's voice suddenly sounded behind him, calm and wise, filled with the coolness of a sage. "You're not a bad person, Jake. You don't have it in you to be one. What made you want to kill?"
Jake, who had just taken a step, froze. His back tensed, his spine felt locked, and he couldn't muster the strength to move.
His hand clenched instinctively at his side. Facing away from Benedict, Jake's face showed a mix of shock and tension.
After a moment, he adjusted his breathing and repeated, "I don't know what you're talking about."
Benedict smiled slightly, his gaze drifting to the passing cars. He stepped closer. "You know exactly what I'm talking about."
Jake felt Benedict's eyes boring into his back. "Professor, this joke isn't funny."
Benedict continued to smile, the faint smell of smoke from his clothes wafting toward Jake. "Jake, your enemy isn't Brooklyn; it's Sebastian. Am I right?"
Jake's eyes flickered with panic, which quickly vanished. He looked at the hospital building across the street, his tone casual. "Professor, your storytelling skills surpass your medical expertise. You should consider a career change."
Benedict slipped a hand into the pocket of his white coat, his eyes, seasoned by decades of experience, fixed on Jake with confident calm. "You can't fool me. You might deceive Brooklyn and Sebastian, but not me. When someone has murder in their eyes, their whole body exudes a certain aura. It's not something everyone can detect. I've seen someone with that aura before, someone very much like you."
It was not about foresight; it was about experience. Having seen and dealt with so many situations, all those experiences became the basis for future judgments, allowing one to sense impending danger.
That was the charm of time and experience.
Jake laughed coldly. "Professor, don't pin baseless accusations on others. I can't bear the charge of murder."
"Of course, you can't! Especially since your target is Sebastian! Do you think your actions go unnoticed? You've been monitoring Sebastian's car from your office. You think I don't know?"
Benedict's voice suddenly grew louder, a sharp, cold light flashing in his eyes.
His demeanor shifted from calm to severe, even terrifying, forcing Jake to slow his breathing and his heart to race.
Veins bulged on Jake's forehead as he turned, his face filled with fear, staring at Benedict.
Both men looked into each other's eyes, unable to discern what lay within.
"How do you know?"
Benedict's face, marked by time, creased into a smile, his eyes deep and cold. "I've long suspected your motives for joining Aucester Hospital and getting close to Brooklyn. I didn't know your target was Sebastian until I saw you monitoring his car in your office. You probably forgot that the glass behind you reflected your computer screen. You shut down your computer quickly, but I was lucky enough to see it. Wouldn't you say that's divine intervention?"
Benedict's calmness grew as he spoke, while Jake's anxiety increased.
Finally, Jake's eyes flashed, and he smiled. "So what? I monitored Sebastian out of curiosity about Aucester's big shot. Is curiosity a crime? Even if it is, I'll remove the surveillance. It's not the same as murder."
Benedict waved the file in his hand. "Jake, you're now on my list of suspects. If anything happens to Sebastian, you won't escape responsibility. I don't care what you put in his car; you'd better find a way to remove it. You saved my life, so I'll help you once. If I tell Sebastian and he finds something suspicious in his car, what do you think he'll do?"
Jake's palm was slick with sweat. He stared at Benedict.
Benedict patted Jake's shoulder. "Jake, turning back is your best option. I'll help you get back to that car. How you handle it is up to you. If you have unresolved hatred, come find me."
With that, Benedict walked toward the hospital entrance, leaving Jake standing there, stunned.
Later, Benedict approached Brooklyn with a casual air. "Hey Brooklyn, I heard Sebastian has a high-end car. I'd like to take a ride in that Rolls-Royce. Is it his?"
Brooklyn looked at Benedict in surprise. "I thought you didn't like flashy things. Why the sudden interest in his car?"
Benedict sipped his water slowly. "Sometimes it's good to change things up! Get the car over here; I want to try it out."
Brooklyn scrutinized Benedict, skeptical. "Do you have a secret? Just tell me. Do you want his car? I can ask him to give it to you."
"No way! I don't like metal boxes. Just bring the car over for a spin!"
Jake, sitting in his cubicle outside, glanced at the glass behind him and cursed silently.
Benedict's expression remained unchanged as he caught sight of Jake outside.
Brooklyn frowned. "Not going to tell me?"
"I just want to take a ride. Hurry up, and bring it over before the end of the day. My butt's itching to try it out."
Brooklyn sighed, exasperated. "Fine, I'll have his driver bring it over."
"Good, Brooklyn, you're the best."
Brooklyn rolled her eyes. "No wonder Dr. Warner calls you a mischievous old man."
Meanwhile, Dario stood at Sebastian's desk, his face grave, his voice trembling. "Mr. Kingsley, we found an invisible bomb in your car. The experts say its power is enough to obliterate the vehicle."
Sebastian looked up at Dario, his deep eyes narrowing, a cold light flashing. "A bomb?"
"Yes, in your car. We're investigating the culprit, but we don't know where they planted it. We did find fingerprints and are working on identifying them. We should have answers soon."
Sebastian's long fingers gripped his pen, his lips curling into a contemptuous, dangerous smile. "Someone managed to plant this without detection. It must be an insider. Inform me as soon as the fingerprint results are in."
"Yes, Mr. Kingsley. The bomb has been defused. What should we do with the car?"
Sebastian wouldn't use the car again.
Before he could give instructions, his phone rang, displaying Brooklyn's number. He picked it up, signaling Dario to wait.
His expression softened. "Brooklyn, what's up?"
"Hey, are you at the office? Is your car free?"
Car?
Sebastian's expression darkened. "Which car?"
"The one you usually drive."
Sebastian's fingers tightened around the phone. "If it's urgent, I can send another car. This one's in use."
"Professor Harrington wanted to experience your car. It's not a big deal. Another time, then."
Sebastian's alertness heightened. "Professor Harrington wants to use the car?"
"Yeah, he suddenly said he wanted to use it today."
Benedict? Was this a coincidence or something else?
Regardless, Sebastian couldn't see him having a motive for murder.
"Alright, I'll have the car sent over. It'll be there in about half an hour. Since it's your teacher, he gets priority."
"Thanks, Sebastian."
After hanging up, Sebastian instructed, "Send the car to Aucester Hospital. Monitor it closely. Report any suspicious activity immediately. Whoever wants me dead must be caught."
"Yes, sir!"
Trying to destroy his car? That person was asking for trouble.
"Done. His assistant will bring the car over soon. Enjoy your ride, professor."
"Thanks, Brooklyn. You're the best."
Benedict strolled out of the office, smiling, and pointed at Jake. "I can't drive. Take me for a spin."
Jake's eyes gleamed with hidden meaning. "Sure. I'd be happy to."
Dario soon arrived with the car, confirmed the internal surveillance, and called Sebastian. Then he waited in the parking lot.
Soon, two figures emerged from the hospital's revolving doors: Benedict and Jake.
Dario bowed slightly. "Mr. Harrington, Mr. Kingsley asked me to personally hand you the keys. Enjoy your ride."
Dario's scrutinizing gaze briefly assessed Jake before withdrawing. "Dr. Harris, enjoy your ride as well."
Jake took the keys from Dario. "Thanks."
