Chapter 562 The Demon Within, Must Be Faced Alone
In the end, Brooklyn couldn't win against Sebastian and had to follow his instructions, letting him personally drop her off at the hospital entrance.
As she got out of the car, Sebastian reminded her through the window, "Wait for me here after work tonight. I'll come to pick you up. If I don't show up, don't leave."
Brooklyn lifted her bag, "I can take a cab home. Besides, my driving skills are better than any professional taxi driver. Trust me."
Sebastian firmly rejected Brooklyn's suggestion, "No way. In this kind of terrible weather, I can't trust anyone."
Except for himself.
Brooklyn fully understood what it meant to be arrogant, but she liked Sebastian's arrogance at this moment.
"Alright, I'll wait for you here. If you don't come, I won't go anywhere."
This answer finally satisfied Sebastian, but knowing Brooklyn, such promises were often broken.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck without warning, followed by thunder. The sky was filled with flashes of lightning and a massive storm, with the wind carrying the thunderous sound directly to the ground.
Pedestrians hurried their steps, tightened their coats, and tried to steady their umbrellas, but they couldn't escape the sudden downpour.
Brooklyn, already out of the car, watched the rain pour down with a lingering fear and opened the car door again.
Sebastian was slightly surprised and turned to look at Brooklyn in the passenger seat. Her face had turned pale, and her cheeks had lost their usual rosy glow.
"What's wrong, Brooklyn?"
As soon as Sebastian's question fell, Brooklyn suddenly wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly and refusing to let go.
Her slender arms hugged him deeply, her face buried in his chest, breathing in the scent of his cologne, gasping for air. After a long while, she finally spoke, "Sebastian, I'm really scared."
Sebastian's back suddenly tensed, and he pulled her into his embrace, covering her back with his hand, gently reassuring her, "Are you thinking about that incident?"
Brooklyn nodded. Despite her usual bravery, ever since she fell off a cliff in Jabari during a heavy rainstorm, she had subconsciously feared heavy rain, especially thunderstorms. The sound of thunder made her feel like she was being swept into an endless black tide again, a primal fear of death triggered by her brain.
She feared the past repeating itself, feared the black waves swallowing her whole again, and most of all, feared that in that deep despair, no matter how much she called out someone's name, there would be no response.
She hadn't seen such heavy rain in years and thought she had forgotten, but she hadn't.
The lightning and thunder brought back familiar terror, even more intense than before.
Sebastian's heart ached as he tightened his grip on her, gently stroking her back, his soft voice fighting against the overwhelming thunder above, "It's okay now. Don't be afraid, Brooklyn. I'm here. Hold me tight."
Brooklyn's tall frame curled up in Sebastian's arms like a helpless child, clutching his sleeve, seeking solace in his embrace.
Her body trembled violently, losing all her usual confidence and strength, becoming a small, shivering pet in his arms, seeking comfort from her master.
Sebastian's heartache and anger almost overwhelmed his rationality. He hated his past self even more, hated that he couldn't be there for her in time, hated that he couldn't prevent her from getting hurt.
"Brooklyn, you don't have to go to work today. I'll stay with you." His gentle voice floated into her ears, while outside, the storm and thunder continued to rage. Inside the car, he provided her with perfect protection.
Brooklyn didn't respond immediately, continuing to lean against him, her nerves slowly calming down. Her fingers clutched his suit jacket, wrinkling his sleeve.
"I was just suddenly very scared. Let me hold you a little longer, and I'll be fine."She was still trying to be strong in front of him.
Sebastian held her tightly, "I'm not going to the office today. We're going home."
Brooklyn was startled by his words and quickly broke free from his embrace like a rabbit, "No, I'm fine now. You should go to the office and pick me up after work."
Sebastian looked at her face repeatedly, seeing no signs of improvement, "Work can wait. It's fine."
Brooklyn took a deep breath. Outside, the lightning and thunder continued, and the rain poured down relentlessly. She steadied her breathing, "I'm not a child anymore. I have to overcome these psychological shadows myself, Sebastian. You can't always be there in this kind of weather."
"As long as you need me, I'll be there, no matter the weather. So, just stay here with me and don't think about anything else."
Through the car window, the wipers swept away the rain. Brooklyn closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Sebastian, I'm becoming more and more dependent on you. This isn't a good sign."
Yes, she had noticed it herself. She was becoming more and more dependent on him, unable to leave him.
Sebastian warmed her with his body heat, his large hand warming her cold fingers, "If you don't rely on me, who else would you rely on?"
She meant that she used to be able to stand on her own, but now she felt like a dependent.
"I'm really fine now. Go to work."
In the end, Brooklyn broke free from Sebastian's embrace. She had to face it all.
As Sebastian escorted Brooklyn to the hospital lobby, he held an umbrella, covering her with two-thirds of it, while his suit got soaked.
As he turned to leave, Brooklyn watched his back in the rain, his black suit drenched, and took a deep breath.
To have such a husband, what more could a wife ask for?
Bianca stared intently at the screen, her expression serious, her eyes fixed on every word.
It turned out that the person Jennifer had been in contact with was an old friend of hers. They had a close relationship, but later parted ways due to an incident. This person then faded from the public eye.
Shortly after, Jennifer joined the Kingsley family and became Brian's wife.
Jennifer met with her old friend several times, giving him money each time. Was it financial aid or something else?
Bianca put down the mouse and pondered. If it were just financial aid, Jennifer wouldn't have chosen such hidden places for their meetings.
Moreover, Jennifer didn't seem happy to see this person, as if she didn't want to meet him.
An old acquaintance she didn't want to see but had to. Could it be that he knew some secret about Jennifer?
Bianca's eyes widened. With Brian's power, marrying any woman was normal, but Jennifer came from a humble background. How did she end up with Brian?
"Could someone have helped Jennifer back then?" Bianca muttered to herself. If she investigated this person, would it uncover secrets from the previous generation?
'Investigate or not?' She thought.
A phone rang suddenly, interrupting Bianca's thoughts.
The phone rang along with a loud thunderclap, the oppressive sky making it hard to breathe. The number on the screen made Bianca tense up.
She quickly answered the call, "What's up?"
The voice on the other end was urgent, "The person Jennifer was in contact with has been killed."
"What!" Bianca stood up from her chair, her face pale with shock, her fingers tightening around a pen, slowing her breathing, "Who killed him? When?"
"It happened during the heaviest rain. He was carrying luggage, looked like he was about to skip town. The killer used a sniper rifle. We don't know who did it. The cops are already on it. When I left, Ophelia's team had just taken the body away."
Bianca's brow furrowed deeply, "Damn it! This guy must've had some serious dirt. Now we can only wait for the cops to crack the case."
The person on the other end scoffed, "You really think we can count on the cops? We might as well handle it ourselves."
"Ophelia seems reliable. Anyway, with no evidence now, we can only wait for news."
"Alright, I'll keep an eye on Jennifer. She's got the most to gain from this and a strong motive for murder."
"Okay, and don't breathe a word of this to anyone, especially not Brooklyn."
"Got it."
Hanging up the phone, Bianca looked out the window at the overwhelming darkness sweeping across the land, giving a sense of impending doom.
Meanwhile, in the MBK CEO's office.
A news report played on the wall-mounted TV screen, "Breaking news: Around 9 AM today, a man in his forties was killed in the rain. The killer used a sniper rifle, and the victim died instantly."
"The victim was carrying a suitcase and had a ticket to a neighboring country, but the cops confirmed that the name on his ID was fake..."
"The victim's body is currently unclaimed. The cops are investigating the truth behind his death and his real identity. If you have any information, please contact the following number..."
Dario shook his head, "Killing someone in this weather, what timing. Using a sniper rifle, the killer seems very professional."
Sebastian didn't comment, picking up the remote to switch to the financial news channel. Suddenly, the victim's face and ID photo appeared on the screen.
On the high-definition screen, the victim's ID photo was enlarged, showing every detail clearly.
Sebastian's eyes were suddenly drawn to the photo, his gaze fixed on the man's face, from his forehead to his eyes, from his nose to his chin. This man's appearance was so familiar.
A flash of lightning in his mind, Sebastian's deep eyes suddenly focused!
He quickly grabbed his phone, his fingers swiftly finding a group photo, then stared at a particular face in the photo. Why did this person look so similar to the man in the photo?
Although the victim was much older, his features couldn't change. They were the same person!
