Chapter 141 She Conquered Everyone with Her Medical Skills
Zach hastily interrupted Piper. "Given Dr. Mitchell's skill in internal medicine, it would be best for her to stay at her post. We can arrange for other surgical personnel."
Piper firmly disagreed. "This is a matter of life and death. Dr. Mitchell, you wouldn't refuse, would you?"
The conference room fell silent. Brooklyn looked at her hands, remaining silent.
When Brooklyn raised her head, she saw Zach looking at her with gentle eyes, patiently waiting for her without a hint of coercion.
Piper pressed on. "Dr. Mitchell, is there some inconvenient reason why you can't perform the surgery?"
Zach calmly interrupted her, saying, "Dr. Whitman, Dr. Mitchell is already an outstanding cardiologist and doesn't need to prove herself further. The matter is settled."
Brooklyn could feel Zach's special care for her, and so could the keen eyes of outsiders.
Piper gritted her teeth in anger. What benefits had Brooklyn given Zach to make him care for her so much?
Suddenly, the alarm in the ICU went off. Zach and Brooklyn stood up almost simultaneously. "The patient is in danger!"
Zach immediately issued orders. "Prepare for surgery now. Two teams will operate simultaneously. Dr. Moore, we'll each take one. You will be the lead surgeon. Choose your first assistant and notify the anesthesiology department."
Before Dr. Moore could ask anyone, Samantha volunteered. "Dr. Moore, I'll be your first assistant."
Dr. Moore was uncertain. "You? Are you up to it?"
Samantha stood up and gently smiled at him. "Dr. Moore, the title evaluation was not a joke. Don't you trust me?"
Brooklyn clenched her fists. How was Samantha chosen?
Of course, if Brooklyn knew that a crucial vote came from Piper, she would not be puzzled.
Dr. Moore nodded. "Alright then. Come with me."
Piper said, "Dr. Carter, the recent chain reaction car accident has already used up a lot of medical staff. There are no suitable people left..."
Only Brooklyn remained.
Zach looked at Brooklyn. He had her as an assistant before and trusted their rapport. Moreover, Brooklyn was capable of being an assistant. He gently smiled. "Dr. Mitchell, would you be willing to be my first assistant?"
There was no time for hesitation. Brooklyn nodded. "Alright!"
In the operating room, Brooklyn changed into blue surgical scrubs. Her heart pounded with excitement. She loved this outfit and loved performing surgeries to alleviate patients' suffering. She loved surgery so much.
However, not as an assistant.
Zach nodded to her. "Don't be nervous. Believe in yourself."
Brooklyn nodded. Although she had not participated in a major surgery for a long time, she practiced simulations every day, repeating every past surgery.
The complex surgery officially began.
"Scalpel."
Zach's calm and skillful surgical techniques truly opened Brooklyn's eyes. She had performed many surgeries, but neither her speed nor her skills were on par with his. If she could apprentice under Zach, she would have struck gold!
The atmosphere in the room was tense. Everyone was on edge. Zach, while skillfully operating, also tried to ease the tension. "Relax, you are old friends with intestines and lungs. Don't act like you've never seen them before."
Brooklyn was momentarily stunned. What a perfect analogy.
The anesthesiologist chuckled. "I didn't expect Dr. Carter to be so funny."
Zach said, "Hemostat."
Then, he added, "If you feel unfamiliar, come over and touch them. They're all friendly."
Brooklyn almost laughed. How could Zach call the intestines friendly! Was Zach an aloof man or a joker?
Indeed, the atmosphere in the operating room relaxed a lot. The surgery was very complex and would take seven to eight hours. Without some conversation, the body would soon tire.
"Suction."
Brooklyn reached out and swiftly suctioned away the blood obstructing the view.
Zach glanced at Brooklyn in astonishment. Her technique shocked him! Her speed was incredible, and her precision unmatched. Was she a surgeon or an internal medicine physician?
Ventricular septal defect repair inevitably involved congestion, requiring high coordination between the lead surgeon and the assistant. Otherwise, it would be impossible to proceed in the blind spots.
Brooklyn nodded. "Ready."
"Alright. Let's begin!"
The transition took only a moment. The removal of blood and the surgical knife worked in tandem, and Zach beautifully completed the crucial steps of the operation.
The surgery ended successfully. Zach softly said, "I'm not done yet. I'll handle the closing. Dr. Mitchell, you can go out first."
He used this excuse to let her rest.
At that moment, the phone on the operating room wall rang.
"Dr. Carter, we need support! Arrange a first assistant for me immediately! Hurry!"
There was complication with the other surgery! Brooklyn's premonition was correct.
"I'll go!"
