Chapter 327 The Secret Hidden in the Blood
Zach's eyes were getting redder, the veins popping out more. "Ma'am, it's not that we don't want to help, but the patient's blood type is super rare, and we just don't have it."
The pregnant woman's mom immediately stuck out her arm. "Take mine! Take my blood!"
Her husband, looking totally exhausted, stared at Zach without blinking. "Please, save my wife."
Brooklyn turned away, tears streaming down her face. She could've saved a life, but as she looked at the veins on her arm, she knew she couldn't. If she gave her blood, the patient would suffer even more.
A doctor shouted, "The patient is awake! Dr. Carter, she's awake!"
Zach broke free from the family, leaned in close to the patient, checked her eyelids, listened to her heart and pulse, then weakly put down his stethoscope. He quietly told a young nurse, "Go get the baby. Let her see the baby."
The young nurse cried out, "Is there really no way to save her? We've saved so many patients with massive bleeding before, why can't we save her? With all our advanced medical tech, why do people still die?"
The other doctors started sobbing quietly. They knew the patient had heart disease, and with the massive bleeding and no timely blood transfusion, there was no saving her.
Zach painfully held his forehead and said softly, "Alright, go get the baby."
The young nurse nodded, looked up at Brooklyn, who was veiled, and cried out in pain, "Why do people have to die?"
Her crying made Brooklyn even sadder.
The new mother saw her baby, and a gentle smile spread across her tired face. Tears streamed down as her weak fingers gently touched the baby's tiny hand. The mix of joy and sorrow hit everyone in the room.
Brooklyn couldn't bear to look anymore. She turned her back to the patient and silently wept.
"Sir, can you let me live one more day? Just one more day." The pregnant woman grabbed the corner of Zach's white coat, her blood staining it. Her weak voice pleaded like a dying leaf clinging to the tree.
Zach stayed silent, his big hand gripping hers. "Look at your baby."
"One day, no matter the cost, let me live one more day. I want to see my baby again." She didn't want to give up. Her vital signs were fading bit by bit.
The new mother was willing to pay any price to live one more day, even just one more day.
Brooklyn slowly turned around and locked eyes with Zach again.
While transfusing blood with a virus could prolong the new mother's life by a day, what did it truly mean for her?
The new mother pleaded, "Please, doctor, please..."
Brooklyn clenched her fists and walked to the window. "Zach, translate for me."
She whispered in a voice only the three of them could hear, "My blood type is the same as yours, but you know about AIDS, right? I have AIDS." As Brooklyn spoke, tears gushed out uncontrollably.
Zach translated, and the patient's face changed dramatically upon hearing it.
AIDS, the disease that made life worse than death.
Brooklyn wiped away her tears and asked, "So, are you still willing?"
The patient looked at Brooklyn with terror, like she was seeing a demon, and didn't dare to speak.
Brooklyn stood up, holding onto the bed as she thought, 'How could I want it? With such a disease, there's no hope left.'
The new mother looked at the baby beside her, a faint smile on her lips. "I'm willing. As long as I can live one more day, I'm willing."
"Brooklyn, you..." Zach grabbed her arm. "If you do this, you won't be able to hide it anymore, you know?"
Brooklyn smiled. "If it means she can live one more day, what do I have to fear? Draw the blood."
"Are you sure?" Zach asked.
Brooklyn nodded. "Hurry, she can't wait."
They got the consent of all the family members, and at the same time, Brooklyn's AIDS status was made public.
Blood flowed from her body into the pregnant woman. The two women exchanged a smile, and from that moment, their fates seemed intertwined.
The pregnant woman was out of danger, but Brooklyn fell ill from the excessive blood loss.
"How could you be so foolish?" Zach gently stroked her hair, his heart aching.
Brooklyn lay in bed all day, her face finally regaining some color. She smiled weakly. "I've always been this foolish, and you're just realizing it now?"
He smiled tenderly, lifting a bowl of oatmeal to his lips and blowing on it. "Have some oatmeal."
"In a few days, test her to see her resistance to the virus," Brooklyn said.
"Why do you want her tested but refuse to get tested yourself? Since you got the test results, you haven't once voluntarily gone for a test," Zach asked.
"Do you want the truth? I'm scared. Our hospital's tests are the most authoritative in Aucester. Where else can I go for a test? Besides, with this disease, what's the difference between getting tested or not? Early detection, early treatment?" Brooklyn said with a bitter smile.
She finally spoke the words she had been holding back. She truly didn't have the courage to endure another blow.
Zach fed her oatmeal spoonful by spoonful, without saying a word.
After she finished, he walked out of the room, tears he could no longer hold back streaming down his face like knives cutting into his skin.
A week later, at Kingsley Manor.
The sound of porcelain shattering came from the bedroom on the second floor, scaring Jennifer and the servants so much that none of them dared to take a step forward.
"Get out!" Sebastian swept all the photos on the table to the floor. The photos of Zach and Brooklyn in intimate poses were suggestive.
"Mr. Kingsley, these photos might need further verification," Dario said.
"Get out!" The pen in his hand was thrown to the floor, and in his rage, Sebastian felt like killing someone!
Dario exited the office, and in the empty room, Sebastian clutched his head in pain, his heart and nerves feeling like they were about to shatter!
'Brooklyn, what do you want? To punish me? To get revenge on me? Why not just confront me directly and take your revenge?!' Sebastian thought.
