Chapter 106 Wayne Fainted
Sylvia was deep in her work when a knock on the office door made her jump. The medical assistant burst in, looking frantic.
"Dr. Symons, the captain just called. A passenger on the plane fell ill and fainted. They need us to check it out."
The urgency in the assistant's voice made Sylvia's heart race. She grabbed the emergency kit and rushed over.
When she got there, the chief flight attendant looked surprised to see her.
"Dr. Symons, what are you doing here?"
Sylvia, still catching her breath, asked, "How's the patient?."
"The patient already woke up."
"Woke up? Then why call me?"
"We didn't call the flight doctor. The passenger woke up quickly and said he was okay."
Sylvia, still panting from the rush, was speechless. "Who pulled this prank and called me over?"
Just then, Steve appeared, looking sheepish.
"Dr. Symons, Mr. Valdemar told me to."
"Albert?" Sylvia was even more confused. "He's the captain of this flight?!"
"Yes, I am."
Sylvia turned to see Albert walking over in uniform.
She blinked, surprised. "Why are you still flying? Weren't you supposed to be with Yvette for her checkup?"
Albert frowned, his voice tinged with something unspoken. "Checkup? Didn't she go dancing?"
Sylvia replied, "She's pregnant, how could she be dancing? What are you talking about? Why aren't you with Yvette for her checkup?"
The crew gathered around, curious about the commotion, but they didn't expect to hear such personal matters. Their eyes gleamed with gossip.
Albert's displeased gaze swept over his colleagues, and they quickly straightened up and went away.
Albert then spoke, "She didn't tell me."
"Did you ask?" Sylvia was annoyed.
Albert's brows furrowed tightly, his voice hoarse with restraint. "If she doesn't want to talk, who can make her?"
Sylvia was taken aback. It was true that Yvette was always very stubborn.
"She's pregnant, her hormones are all over the place. You need to be more understanding. Don't judge her. Your wife is going through a lot physically, and as her husband, if you can't handle this, how do you think you can handle having a child?" Sylvia scoffed. "Call her right now and ask where she is. Stop standing there like an idiot."
In the taxi, Yvette leaned against the window, eyes closed, feeling the breeze through the window crack.
Last time she went to the hospital, she was unsure about keeping the baby. This time, she hoped for a healthy child. Her feelings were complicated, but there was a hint of reassurance.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her bag. Yvette took it out and saw it was a call from her mother.
Calling at this time, it probably wasn't about her prenatal results. A sense of foreboding welled up.
Yvette answered, and immediately, the sound of a woman crying and wailing came through, making her tense up.
"Yvette! Yvette, come back quickly! Hurry! Wayne has fainted!"
Lassie and Zora's voices alternated between crying and shouting, making Yvette's temples throb.
She took a deep breath, trying to keep her cool. "If he fainted, call 911. I can't just teleport home! Do you want him to die?"
But the two women on the other end didn't seem to hear her and kept crying and complaining.
"What should we do? Wayne looks really bad this time. What will Kyle and I do without him?"
"Yvette, I told you we should have bought a house with an elevator earlier. Wayne can't climb stairs every day!"
Yvette was speechless and furious. She shouted into the phone, "He's not dead yet! Stop crying like he already is!"
This kind of situation had happened many times before. Yvette knew she shouldn't have any hope, but she couldn't help feeling disappointed.
She immediately hung up and called 911.
After hanging up, Yvette rubbed her temples and weakly gave the driver her home address. "Please take me there."
When Yvette arrived home, it was exactly as she had imagined.
Her mother was crying while holding Wayne, and Zora was crying while holding Kyle. Everyone's eyes were swollen from crying, but no one had called an ambulance or taken any emergency measures.
Lassie, holding Wayne, glared at Zora. "She just didn't want to spend money, so she called you back."
She cried while supporting Wayne. "Wayne is so pitiful, working hard to support the family, but his wife won't spend money to save his life. Yvette, you have to save your brother."
Zora, hearing Lassie say this, retorted, "What are you talking about? When have I ever not spent money on Wayne's treatment? He's my husband; I'm more afraid of him dying than you are."
Seeing the two about to argue, Yvette shouted, "Stop arguing at a time like this. Can't you two stop causing trouble!"
The busy emergency room corridor was filled with the sound of footsteps and the screeching of hospital bed wheels.
Doctors and nurses were all busy, and no one came to check on Wayne. After paying the ambulance fee, Yvette realized there were no beds available in the emergency room.
Yvette hurriedly got a folding bed and placed it in the hallway. People running back and forth occasionally bumped into Wayne's bed.
Yvette went to call a doctor, and seeing the situation, Lassie and Zora immediately fell into a state of emotional collapse, crying loudly despite being in the hospital.
"He was already in critical condition, and not having a bed will make him more uncomfortable! Yvette, do something!!"
"Yvette, save Wayne. If he dies, Kyle and I won't know how to go on."
The noisy environment, the strong smell of disinfectant in the hospital, and the crying of the two women in front of her made Yvette feel nauseous.
She raised her hand to pat her chest and almost pleaded, "Stop making a scene. I'll ask the doctor about the situation. Can you stop crying, please?"
Overwhelmed, Yvette hurriedly tried to leave, but her phone suddenly rang.
It was Albert.
Yvette glanced around the emergency room, seeing husbands and wives supporting each other. Only she had to face all this mess alone.
A wave of vulnerability briefly overwhelmed her rationality.
But then she thought, she had always been alone. Albert was definitely not a man she could rely on.
She frowned and hung up the phone.
