Chapter 386 I Thought I Could Stand Up
Their eyes locked, and the air in the room instantly froze. Even the usually calm and composed Albert's pupils contracted in panic. Had Yvette suddenly woken up?
He... he was half-squatting in front of her!
Yvette's vision was blurry, but the moment she saw Albert's handsome face so close, it became clear.
Through the bright moonlight streaming in from the window, Yvette clearly saw that Albert, who should have been lying in bed, was actually by her bedside.
Her gaze fell on his half-squatting legs, somewhat puzzled, as if she couldn't react for a moment.
A trace of panic flashed in Albert's eyes, but he quickly calmed down, his expression returning to normal.
"You're awake?" Albert's voice was filled with surprise. "Yvette, I stood up, look..."
Before Albert could finish his sentence, his tall body suddenly leaned back, and he fell heavily to the ground.
"Are you okay?" Yvette exclaimed in shock.
Yvette watched Albert fall with wide eyes, and she nervously squatted down, trying to help him up. "How do you feel? Can you get up?"
Hearing Yvette's slightly trembling voice, which genuinely conveyed her concern, Albert felt a bit more at ease.
His quick thinking to stage this pitiful act wasn't in vain.
He sighed, his tone full of "disappointment". "I thought I could stand up, I'm so useless."
Hearing the word "useless" from the always proud Albert made Yvette's heart ache even more.
She used all her strength to help Albert back to bed. "Don't push yourself, it's okay if it takes some time to get better, we'll take it slow! Don't rush!"
Albert lowered his eyes and nodded, the glint in his eyes hidden by his long lashes.
Albert said in a deep voice, "I just don't want to keep burdening you."
"I never felt you were a burden." Yvette pretended to be angry. "Albert, are you trying to push me away again?"
Albert's thin lips pressed tightly together, he didn't speak, but his face showed more pain.
Yvette asked nervously, "Is it very uncomfortable? Is it painful or what?"
"It's okay, I can bear it." Albert's voice became slightly hoarse.
Yvette tucked Albert in and comforted him, "I'll go get Dr. Cunningham to check on you!"
With that, Yvette turned and left the ward.
But when she got to Doyle's office, she found out he was on leave today and not at the hospital.
Thinking of the scene where Albert fell and his extremely pale face, Yvette's anxiety grew stronger.
Seeing Yvette hurriedly leave the ward, Albert let out a long sigh of relief. His impulsiveness had almost exposed him. If Yvette discovered his deceit, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Just as he was relaxing, the ward door suddenly opened.
Albert was about to signal Doyle to be careful with his words, but he was met with a fawning expression, stunning him and causing his brows to instantly furrow.
Yvette followed behind the unfamiliar doctor and said to Albert, "Dr. Simmons was very concerned when he heard you fell, so he came to check on you. Don't worry, it won't be anything serious."
Albert's aura darkened, his expression cold. "Where's Doyle?"
"Dr. Cunningham is on leave today, not at the hospital," Yvette explained. "We can't wait for him to come back, delaying any longer could worsen your condition."
Cameron Simmons, with a fawning smile, had long wanted to curry favor with the Valdemar Family.
But Doyle was close to Albert, being friends for many years, so naturally, he never had the chance.
Now that he had this opportunity, he was determined to seize it.
Cameron smiled at Albert and said, "Mr. Valdemar, rest assured, we are well aware of your condition and will not disappoint you."
Albert's eyes darkened, his aura growing more intense. "I said, wait for Doyle."
Albert's resistance made Yvette extremely displeased, her face changed, and she stared at Albert with sharp eyes.
She feared that delaying Albert's condition any longer would cause major problems, so she took a firm stand.
"At this point, what doctor are you still choosing?" Yvette decisively said, "Go for the check-up now, you are not allowed to refuse!"
The wheelchair wheels rubbed against the floor as Albert was pushed into the CT room amidst a flurry of footsteps.
Yvette instinctively followed but was pushed out by a nurse.
"Mrs. Valdemar, please wait outside." The nurse's emotionless voice kept Yvette outside the door.
Watching the radiation-proof metal door of the CT room slowly close, Yvette's hands clenched tightly together.
She couldn't help but recall the nightmare she had that night: Albert's forehead covered in sweat, his face contorted in pain as he used all his strength to support his body—just one of his countless rehabilitation attempts.
Yvette stood at a distance, watching him fall heavily to the ground once again.
The scene gradually blurred, but his desperate screams echoed throughout the room.
Albert finally broke down after repeated rehabilitation failures.
Yvette walked to Albert's side, squatted down, and tried to help him up, but only made him angrier. "Yvette, I told you to get out, don't you understand?"
Yvette's throat choked up, "I won't leave, I said I would take care of you..."
Albert shouted, "I don't need your care, get out! Get out of my world, I never want to see you again!"
The scene shifted, and Yvette stood outside the room, sensing a dangerous atmosphere.
She reached out and pressed the door handle, and a strong smell of blood filled her nose.
Yvette's hands trembled, her legs felt heavy as she walked step by step into the room, only to see blood everywhere and a man lying in a pool of blood.
It was Albert's body.
Albert, such a proud man, could no longer stand after constant failures.
Yvette woke up in fright, and at that moment, she saw Albert squatting in front of her, seemingly trying to stand up.
But he fell heavily to the ground again.
The scene was almost identical to what she saw in her dream.
Yvette would never forget the fear she felt at that moment, she was terrified of seeing him fall, and even more afraid that he would die in despair like in her dream.
Realizing she didn't really want to leave his side, Yvette felt a pain in her heart, as if countless axes were chopping it into pieces, never to be whole again, at the thought that Albert might die.
At this moment, she felt with absolute clarity that regardless of whether Albert loved her or not, she had always loved him.
She couldn't lose Albert, Albert couldn't die!
