Chapter 383 What if I can stand up?
"If I can't become the head of the Valdemar Group in the future, and I don't have a caregiver, would you still be willing to take care of me every day?" Albert's deep, hoarse voice slowly flowed in the small space.
Yvette, who was initially annoyed by his teasing, heard his suddenly somber tone and could only reply impatiently, "Yes."
A wounded man's heart was fragile. He had asked this question countless times, never tiring of it.
He knew she genuinely wanted to take care of him for a lifetime, yet he always sought to confirm her words.
Although she was very angry at his deliberate teasing that made her feel shy, she didn't want to say anything hurtful to him.
Albert's gaze deepened, and his eyes darkened as he looked at Yvette. "What if I can stand up?"
Yvette was taken aback, sensing a deeper meaning in his words but not understanding what he meant. "Wouldn't that be the best outcome?"
"I mean." Albert paused. "If I can stand up, would you still take care of me?"
Yvette frowned, seemingly a bit displeased. "If you're all better, why would I need to take care of you?"
With so many servants at home to take care of his daily needs, if he could take care of himself, why would he need her care?
Albert's eyes darkened. Indeed, once she found out he could stand, Yvette would definitely no longer stay by his side to take care of him, confirming his decision was correct. Still, Albert felt a bit sad that Yvette wasn't even willing to lie to him.
Thinking this, Albert lowered his gaze, his long eyelashes covering his expression.
Yvette looked at his slightly "melancholy" yet restrained appearance and felt even more guilty.
She thought her tone had been too harsh, hurting his fragile heart again, and quickly explained, "I mean, once you're better, you won't need my care anymore."
Albert retorted, "Who said I wouldn't need it?"
Yvette said, "Then hurry up and stand up."
"So you're so eager to leave me, not wanting to take care of me for even a second longer?" Albert's voice carried a hint of resentment. "If you don't want to take care of me, you can leave now."
Yvette felt a bit troubled. How did a perfectly fine conversation turn into her not wanting to take care of him for even a second longer in Albert's mind?
She really couldn't understand his thought process, but since he was a patient, she couldn't say anything harsh to him.
Yvette took a long breath, suppressing her frustration, and said, "I am willing to take care of you! I want you to stand up quickly, not because I don't want to take care of you, but because I want you to be healthy! Health is more important than anything!"
Albert said, "Then promise me, if I stand up, you won't leave."
Yvette felt a headache coming on. Facing such an insecure and unreasonable patient, she could only go along with him. "Alright, alright, I won't leave, okay?"
Albert's tightly pressed lips finally relaxed a bit at this moment.
He suddenly hesitated. Since she had promised to stay by his side, even if he could stand up, she wouldn't leave. Should he confess that he could already stand up?
Albert knew this was the perfect time to confess, but he felt uncertain and nervous because Yvette's tone was perfunctory and comforting. He feared that if he told her he could stand, she would immediately turn hostile and leave.
Albert struggled for a moment, his fists clenched, his fingertips slightly pinching, showing a difficult expression.
Yvette asked worriedly, "What's wrong?"
Albert thought for a moment and finally spoke cautiously, "Yvette, actually..."
Albert's eyes flickered, hesitating to continue.
Yvette looked at him, puzzled. "Actually what?"
Albert opened his mouth, his lips moved slightly, but a huge sense of fear overwhelmed him.
Looking at her innocent and confused eyes, he suddenly didn't dare to speak.
Albert cleared his throat. "Actually, I think your way of helping me wash is quite good."
Yvette was at a loss for words, finding his hesitation a bit inexplicable.
But seeing the emotions flickering in his eyes, Yvette realized he was teasing her again!
Yvette glared at Albert. "It's late, go to sleep!"
Until the room returned to darkness and silence, Albert stared at the ceiling, lost in thought.
The curtains in the room were not fully closed, and the faint moonlight seeped through the gaps, casting light on the ceiling.
Albert looked at the changing shapes of the light, feeling self-contempt.
It was such a simple sentence to tell Yvette the truth. Then, like before, he could just forbid her from leaving, right?
But he had realized in the past few days that what he wanted was not for Yvette to stay by his side unwillingly, but for her to truly love him and accompany him.
So he was afraid, afraid she would be angry at his deception, afraid she would want to leave.
No longer wanting to use forceful means to keep her, Albert became greedier for her love, a thought that made him even more uneasy.
Turning his head, he looked at Yvette lying motionless on the folding bed, her eyes closed and breathing steady. Gazing at her face almost greedily in the cold moonlight, Albert felt a pang of longing.
He was certain that he had to keep Yvette by his side, no matter what method he used.
Because only by keeping her by his side could they slowly resolve the misunderstandings, and he could win back her love.
Suddenly, Yvette, who had been sleeping soundly, turned over and slowly opened her eyes.
Startled, Albert stiffened and quickly closed his eyes, pretending to sleep as his heart began to beat uneasily.
Did she discover something and want to leave while he was asleep?
The thought of this possibility made Albert hold his breath, not daring to make a sound.
Yvette's footsteps sounded in the dark, and Albert could even hear the cautious and stealthy rhythm in her steps.
Albert was extremely nervous.
Until Yvette walked to the bedside and closed the curtains, blocking the last bit of light and plunging the room into pitch darkness. She returned to her folding bed, and Albert finally let out a long breath. She wasn't leaving.
So, she won't leave anymore?
