Chapter 179 Is Albert Meddling?

After wrapping up the transfer, Yvette was completely wiped out. She sat on a hospital bench, staring blankly at the floor while Lassie went through all the tests again. Her eyes were unfocused, lost in thought.

People's feet shuffled past her, blurring her vision and making it hard to snap out of her daze. Zora noticed Yvette's spaced-out look and felt a pang of sympathy. "Yvette, don't be too sad. Mom's gonna get better."

Yvette turned around, reaching out to touch Kyle's innocent face, but she couldn't bring herself to smile at Zora. Pressing her lips together, Yvette said, "I've done everything I can. The rest is up to Mom's fate."

"I have to take care of Kyle, and Wayne's health isn't great, so it's all on you," Zora said apologetically.

Yvette glanced helplessly at Wayne, who was resting on a nearby bench. She knew she had no choice but to keep going. If Wayne got too tired and fell ill again, she'd be in real trouble.

Zora sighed. "One really need to find a capable guy."

Zora's words hit home, and Yvette's eyes dimmed with a hint of hurt. Her dad had passed away when she was young, and it was Lassie who had raised them. Later, when Wayne's health declined, it was Lassie and Yvette who supported the family. Yvette got married, but Albert didn't like her and wouldn't help. Now that they were getting divorced, he was even less likely to help.

Yvette choked up, thinking about her recent confrontation with Albert, feeling extremely conflicted. Maybe their family was just destined not to rely on men. Thinking of this, Yvette felt utterly exhausted.

Seeing Yvette's expression change, Zora realized she had said the wrong thing and quickly changed the subject. "Luckily, you managed to get Dr. Martinez! It's good to have connections in the medical field."

"A friend helped me get in touch with him," Yvette said. "When Mom gets better, we need to find a way to thank him."

"A friend?" Zora teased, looking at Yvette. "Is it that classmate of yours? Or Albert?"

Yvette's brow furrowed, and she didn't directly answer Zora's question, only vaguely saying, "Just a friend."

Not wanting to say more, Yvette stood up with the paper in her hand. "I'll go check if Mom's results are out."

Because of the different hospital levels, Lassie had to redo all her tests. The results showed that Lassie's condition was still very critical.

Since the incident, Yvette had been on edge, almost at her breaking point. It wasn't until Lassie was taken into the operating room that Yvette's heart finally settled a bit.

She thought everything would go smoothly from here, but seeing the attending doctor anxiously going in and out of the operating room, Yvette's medical intuition sensed something was wrong, and she became nervous.

Feeling uneasy, Yvette got up and approached. "Dr. Diaz, is something wrong with my mom?"

"No, but Dr. Martinez hasn't arrived yet. I don't know what's going on; I can't reach him by phone," said Hubert Diaz, Lassie's attending physician, who looked a bit anxious due to the sudden situation.

Lassie's condition was critical, and the surgery was difficult. Without Willard, the surgery couldn't proceed. Yvette's face changed. "How could this be? My friend said everything was arranged."

Seeing Yvette's anxiety, Hubert frowned. "Don't worry too much. I'll call our chief and see if he can contact Dr. Martinez."

"Okay, thank you, Dr. Diaz," Yvette replied.

In the midst of their anxiety, the chief hurried over. Seeing Yvette's family looking at him expectantly, the chief raised his hand to signal them to relax. "Dr. Martinez personally handled the transfer procedures, so there shouldn't be any problems. He might be delayed by an urgent matter. Dr. Diaz will use conservative treatment methods while we wait for Dr. Martinez."

Biting her lip, Yvette said worriedly, "We trust Dr. Martinez, but we're afraid my mom's condition can't wait too long."

The chief nodded and took out his phone. "I'll contact him. Don't worry."

Yvette watched as the chief turned his back to make the call, but after several tries, he still couldn't get through.

Seeing the chief's expression worsen, Yvette's heart, which had just started to relax, tightened with anxiety. Her palms grew cold and clammy.

Watching the chief's slightly hunched, less confident back, Yvette began to break out in a cold sweat.

A terrifying thought was becoming clearer in her mind. Everything David had arranged, everything that had been going so smoothly—why had it suddenly turned out like this? The only person who could make Willard change his mind and become unreachable was Albert.

Yvette swallowed hard, clenching her fists, a sense of despair washing over her. David had said that as long as Albert spoke, Willard would definitely agree.

Yvette wondered if it was Albert causing trouble. Just as Yvette felt suffocated and found it hard to breathe, hurried footsteps suddenly came from behind.

Hubert's eyes lit up. "Mr. Martinez!" Yvette was stunned. She turned around to see a man in a white coat hurrying over.

The man wore a mask, obscuring his face, but his eyes were almost identical to Albert's. He was tall, with bright eyes, and without even glancing at Yvette, he adjusted his sleeves and walked into the operating room. He said to Hubert, "Sorry, my phone died, and I was delayed by something. Let's go, start the surgery."

Yvette finally exhaled the breath she had been holding. Her body went limp, and she almost collapsed to the ground. Wayne quickly supported her. "Yvette!"

Yvette shook her head, saying, "I'm fine." The emotions she had been holding back finally spilled over as her eyes reddened.

The "In Surgery" sign lit up, and Yvette sat on the bench, waiting intently without saying a word. Next to her, Wayne and Zora were arguing.

Zora said, "Mom's still in there. Being agitated won't help. Your health isn't good, and Mom will need someone to take care of her after the surgery. Can you calm down and stay healthy to take care of Mom?"

Wayne shouted, "Mom's undergoing such a complicated surgery. How can I stay calm? She's not your mom!!"

Zora was clearly hurt, yelling, "She's my mom too. Mom helps me take care of Kyle. In my heart, she's my mom. But if you wear yourself out and get sick, what will Yvette and I do? Have you thought about us? Have you thought about Kyle?"

Their argument left Yvette uninterested in participating. She instinctively blocked out their voices.

Yvette suddenly felt a bit disoriented, unsure of where she was or what she was waiting for. Strangely enough, although Lassie had always favored Wayne and wasn't particularly kind to her, Yvette still felt an uncontrollable sadness at the thought of losing her.

Yvette thought, 'What should I do if I really lost Mom?'

Yvette turned her head and saw Wayne leaning tiredly against the back of the bench, while Kyle, unable to sit still, tugged at Zora's arm, wanting to go out and play. She turned back, feeling even more lost.

Yvette instinctively hunched over, covering her face with her hands, exuding an aura of fragility and helplessness. At that moment, a warm hand suddenly rested on Yvette's shoulder.

Yvette looked up wearily, and the face of "Albert," which had flashed through her mind in a mix of positive and negative images, appeared before her eyes.

Yvette was stunned, her emotions indescribable. She opened her mouth, wanting to ask why he was here, but the words didn't come out. She felt an inappropriate sense of joy forcefully emerge from her heart.

The next second, "Albert" spoke with a warm and soothing voice, "Yvette, I'm sorry I'm late."

Yvette blinked, the tumultuous emotions in her heart instantly calming. She pressed her lips together, not saying a word.

The man looked at her apologetically, saying, "I wanted to come quickly to help with Lassie's transfer, but things at the company were complicated. I got here as soon as I could."

Looking up at the lit "In Surgery" sign, he asked, "How is Lassie doing?"

Yvette's lips involuntarily turned down. It was David. Yvette blinked and gave a self-deprecating smile, thinking, 'What am I even hoping for?'
