Chapter 251 You're Not in It for the Money
"Those are just leftovers from before," Yvette said, quickly walking to the bedside table and shoving the box of condoms into the drawer.
Lassie smacked Yvette on the shoulder. "Don't lie to me. If they were leftovers, why are they still here? I already talked to the doctor. Your last check-up showed your uterus is in great shape, and your body has recovered well. Stop using contraception and get pregnant ASAP, got it?"
Yvette looked at Lassie, feeling a chill in her heart. She said her body was fine, but all she really cared about was getting her pregnant as soon as possible.
Yvette stepped aside, standing her ground as she faced Lassie. "You delivered the medicine, took the money, so if there's nothing else, please go home. The Valdemar family's servants are loyal to them. If they report me, I'll be the one kicked out."
Lassie's face twisted in anger. Hearing Yvette mention being kicked out of the Valdemar family, she immediately shouted, "You are Albert's legal wife. Why should you be kicked out? Besides, if you're so worried about that, then get pregnant quickly!"
Lassie glared at Yvette and plopped down on their bed. "Since you said that, I can't leave. I'll personally take these supplements to Albert and ask him whose fault it is that you're not pregnant yet!"
Lassie's words made Yvette's scalp tingle. She knew if Lassie said something like that, she would definitely follow through.
Recalling how Lassie had caused a commotion with the Valdemar family's staff, Yvette took a deep breath and pulled out her phone. "Go home now, or you'll have to figure out Kyle's tutoring fees yourself."
Hearing this, Lassie's eyes lit up. "I knew you would support Kyle."
Seeing Lassie no longer insisting on causing trouble in the Valdemar family, Yvette felt somewhat relieved. She pursed her lips, not wanting to argue further. "Message me when you get home, and I'll transfer the money to you immediately."
"Alright!"
Yvette practically pushed Lassie out of the gate. Every time Lassie paused, Yvette's heart skipped a beat, and she sped up to push her.
Even though Lassie agreed to leave the Valdemar family, she kept lecturing Yvette as they walked.
"Yvette, I'm worried about you. A girl from our humble background marrying into wealth—how can you have a say without a child? You may look down on what I say because you're educated, but you need to understand, this is reality. I've lived long enough to know, and I'm teaching you for your own good!"
Yvette wished she could block out Lassie's words, resisting the urge to push her away.
But this was the Valdemar family. Lassie could act recklessly, but she couldn't.
Lassie kept turning back. "Didn't you study and become a doctor for money? Now, if you have a child for the Valdemar family, won't you secure your financial future too? What are you thinking? Not taking a shortcut is foolish!"
"Mom, can you please stop talking?" Yvette finally snapped at the door. She grabbed Lassie's arm and pulled her towards the gate.
But then, Yvette froze.
Cheryl had been sitting behind the rockery in the yard for who knows how long. Yvette only noticed her when she reached the door.
Yvette had no idea what Cheryl had heard or when she started listening.
Yvette's mind went blank, and she stood there in a daze.
Lassie kept rambling, oblivious to Yvette's unease.
Until Cheryl walked over slowly, interrupting Lassie. "Yvette, I need to go to the back garden. Come with me."
Lassie turned around. "Are you Albert's grandmother? Nice to meet you, I'm Yvette's mother."
Cheryl responded but didn't show much displeasure.
Yvette felt extremely embarrassed. She pulled Lassie aside and said to Cheryl, "Please wait a moment. I'll see my mother off and then accompany you to the back garden."
Yvette dragged Lassie to the roadside outside the villa, hailed a taxi, gave the driver her home address, and slammed the door shut.
Watching the taxi drive away with Lassie, Yvette's tense shoulders finally relaxed, and she let out a sigh of relief.
Yvette was already aware of Cheryl's dislike for Lassie.
However, it was understandable for anyone to feel repulsed, even angry, upon hearing those words from Lassie.
Standing at the Valdemar family's gate, Yvette looked at the closed door, feeling a sense of fear, unsure of what she would face once she entered.
Despite being mentally prepared, Yvette still felt anxious as she returned to the Valdemar family.
She walked cautiously towards Cheryl, waiting for her reprimand.
But to her surprise, Cheryl just waved her over with a calm expression. "Let's get moving."
"Alright, Grandma."
Yvette lowered her eyes and followed Cheryl, feeling increasingly uneasy as Cheryl remained silent.
She pursed her lips and couldn't help but speak, "I'm sorry."
Cheryl stopped and slowly turned around, looking at Yvette. "Why are you apologizing?"
Yvette was stunned. "For what my mother said."
"We are a wealthy family, who doesn't love money?" Cheryl paused and said softly, "But I know you're not here because of the money."
Yvette bit her lower lip, looking at Cheryl's unusually kind face, feeling very conflicted.
Cheryl continued, "Last time your friend came over, she checked on me, and we chatted for a bit. Yvette, you've liked Albert since high school, haven't you?"
Yvette lowered her head in shame, choosing silence in response to Cheryl's question.
"I've always said Albert is stubborn. He's a headstrong person, and I believe you know him well after watching him for so long. I can see that you both have misunderstandings." Cheryl raised her hand to hold Yvette's, gently rubbing it. "Communication is the key to a successful marriage. If he's not opening up, then it's up to you to speak your mind. If you've liked him for so long, why not dare to say it?"
Yvette was stunned for a moment, then looked at Cheryl thoughtfully.
