Chapter 214 Yvette Doesn't Belong to the Valdemar Family
Yvette looked up in surprise; he had actually defended her in front of everyone. She glanced at Albert, still feeling that icy vibe from him. He spoke words of support for her, yet he wouldn't even spare her a glance. Probably just because she was his wife, and getting trashed in front of the Valdemar family was a bad look for him.
Cheryl looked at Albert, just as surprised. "Albert, after all these years, you're siding with an outsider?"
Her words stirred up the room. Bishop sneered, "Hasn't he always been like this? He doesn't even want to come back to the Valdemar family, but Dad still likes him the most." Every word dripped with bitterness over Hayden giving Albert half of the Valdemar Group's shares.
Cheryl didn't get mad, though. She just glanced at Bishop. "Hayden talked to me about his will, and I was on the phone the whole time it was notarized. Got a problem with that?"
Bishop's face darkened, and he looked around awkwardly. "That's not what I meant. I mean, Albert's wrong. He got all that property, he should at least admit he's part of the Valdemar family, right?"
All eyes turned to Albert, who stayed cool and said, "Haven't I always been a Valdemar?"
Bishop had nothing to say to that and shut up. Albert looked at Cheryl and asked, "Grandma, when Grandpa protected you, was he siding with an outsider too?"
Cheryl glared at him, speechless, and muttered, "You still know how to get under people's skin."
Yvette, the center of all this, just kept her head down. She had no voice in the Valdemar family. Albert glanced at her, his brows furrowing slightly.
After greeting Cheryl, it was getting late, and people started to leave. James took David and Lisa out to see them off, while Albert headed to the study to get some work done.
The living room emptied out, leaving just Yvette and Cheryl, along with a few servants. Yvette felt Cheryl's unfriendly gaze and her back tingled, but she didn't dare leave first.
Cheryl, despite her age and white hair, was sharp and full of energy. She stared at Yvette and slowly said, "Are you living with the Valdemar family now?"
"Yes," Yvette replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "Albert generally doesn't stay here."
"I knew it." Cheryl looked at her without expression. "It's good you're here. You can keep me company when there's nothing else to do."
Yvette's back stiffened. "Okay, call me anytime you need me."
"The trip was long, and I'm tired." Cheryl moved her shoulder, still watching Yvette.
Yvette got the hint and moved behind Cheryl to massage her shoulders. "Let me give you a massage," she said softly.
"What do you know about..." Cheryl started, but the soothing pressure from Yvette's hands made her pause. "Have you learned this?"
"I'm a doctor, so I know my way around the human body," Yvette replied, continuing to work on Cheryl's sore muscles with just the right amount of pressure.
Cheryl, who had been ready to criticize, found herself relaxing and closed her eyes slightly, letting Yvette continue. Just then, a low, displeased voice came from upstairs. "Yvette, stop."
Yvette's hands froze, and she turned to see Albert coming down the stairs. Albert walked over, grabbed Yvette's wrist, and pulled her behind him.
Cheryl's temper flared. "Albert, can't I even have her give me a shoulder massage?"
"No," Albert said firmly, turning to Yvette. "Go upstairs and wait for me in the room."
Yvette blinked, confused. "What?"
"Go back to the room and wait for me," Albert repeated, frowning.
Cheryl was even more annoyed. "What's wrong with her giving me a shoulder massage as a junior?"
Albert's tone was stern, and Yvette didn't want to make things worse. She bit her lip and looked at Cheryl apologetically. "I'll go back to the room first." She glanced worriedly at the two of them before heading upstairs.
Cheryl's face turned red with anger. "What are you trying to do?"
Albert's Adam's apple bobbed slightly. "She doesn't belong to the Valdemar family and shouldn't be subjected to your tests." Cheryl gave Albert a long look.
Yvette returned to her room, feeling uneasy. She didn't want to get caught up in the Valdemar family's drama, but it seemed Cheryl, like Hayden, was very fond of Albert.
Cheryl and Hayden were probably the only relatives Albert cared about in the Valdemar family. With Hayden gone, she didn't want Albert and Cheryl to fight because of her. As she was thinking, the door suddenly opened, and Albert walked in.
Yvette bit her lip and watched him approach with a menacing aura. Albert stopped in front of her, looking down. His chest heaved slightly as he asked, "Yvette, do you think you can win favor by pleasing Grandma?"
Yvette was taken aback. "Grandma said her shoulders were uncomfortable, so I helped her."
"That's none of your business," Albert said coldly. "Don't think you can get anything by sucking up to the Valdemar family."
Yvette lowered her eyes, a hint of bitterness in her voice. "I have no such intention. I'm not interested in anything from the Valdemar family." She looked up, fearing he wouldn't believe her, and added, "Including you."
Albert's expression shifted slightly. He sneered, "That's the best." His eyes were cold as he turned to leave. At the door, his hand on the knob, he suddenly turned back to look at her.
Albert glared at her and said in a deep voice, "And just so we're clear, when I said you were my wife earlier, it wasn't to help you. Yvette, don't embarrass me in front of the Valdemar family."
