Chapter 210 Yvette Left Home

Yvette's icy stare finally made Lassie feel a hint of fear. If Yvette still wanted a divorce now, all of Lassie's fake illness drama would be for nothing.

Lassie started to freak out. She lunged forward to grab Yvette, but Yvette shoved her hand away.

"Yvette! I told you, I'm doing this for your own good. You can't divorce Albert! Do you hear me?" In her panic, Lassie let slip her real reason. "Our family is broke. If you divorce Albert, we're all screwed!"

Yvette stopped in her tracks. Lassie thought she might persuade Yvette, and a hopeful spark lit her eyes.

But Yvette turned around and said coldly, "Do whatever you want. I've told you before, your family's problems are none of my business anymore."

With that, Yvette didn't want to stick around another second. She stormed out of the Orlando house, slamming the door so hard that Lassie felt the floor shake.

Seeing Yvette's determination, Lassie started pacing back and forth in the living room, freaking out. She muttered angrily, "Zora, why didn't you help me cover this up? Do you want Kyle and Wayne to suffer? If she divorces, our whole family is doomed!"

Zora sighed. "Mom, blaming me won't help. Yvette insisted on dragging you to the follow-up, she was set on exposing you. I told you before, pretending to be sick isn't a long-term solution."

"Even if it's not a long-term solution, it buys us time!" Lassie was so mad her face turned red. "If I knew she'd find out so fast, I would've made a bigger deal out of the accident!"

"Mom," Zora finally snapped, "You just need the money to fix up the new house. Selling the old one will give us enough to get by. I can still work, and once Wayne gets better, he can do some simple jobs too. We can manage. Why force Yvette to stay married? She's been through enough."

"Shut up!" Lassie glared at Zora, unable to take it. "When Yvette paid for Wayne's surgery and medical bills, I didn't hear you protest. And now you want to act all compassionate? The money from selling the house is nothing compared to what the Valdemar family has. But with money, we can live well!"

Lassie's stubbornness was off the charts. Zora sighed and gave up arguing. Zora said, "Yvette is your daughter. It's your call."

Leaving the Orlando family, Yvette hit rush hour. Standing by the roadside, Yvette squinted at the rows of cars with their brake lights glowing in the setting sun.

She suddenly realized that in this huge city, she had no place to call home. She didn't want to live with the Valdemar family, and she didn't want to go back to the Orlando family either.

A bicycle zoomed past her, almost knocking her over. Startled, Yvette stepped back, only to hear the cyclist complain, "Watch where you're going!"

Yvette pursed her lips. She had been standing still for a long time, yet there were always unreasonable people. It felt like everything was pushing her forward, and people kept blaming her.

Taking a deep breath, Yvette finally picked up her phone and called Sylvia. "Sylvia," Yvette said softly. "I need your help."

Sylvia replied gently, "Let's talk in person." It was rush hour, and Yvette couldn't get a cab, so she hopped on the bus to the medical center to meet Sylvia after work.

When Sylvia came out and saw Yvette looking exhausted, she asked worriedly, "Yvette, are you okay? What happened?"

Yvette realized she must look pretty rough. She shook her head and reassured Sylvia, "Don't worry. Let's find a place to eat and talk over dinner."

Suppressing her worry, Sylvia agreed, "Alright, let's go to that restaurant we always go to near my office. You haven't been to work for a while; you must miss it."

They walked to the restaurant and snagged the last table before the line started. There was only a two-person table left. Yvette and Sylvia sat across from each other. Yvette's expression had softened a bit, and she had been mentally preparing herself on the way.

Gathering her courage, Yvette clenched her fists and said, "Sylvia, I need your help. Do you still have any savings?"

Sylvia nodded, saying, "Yes, I do. Even if I don't, my parents do." But her face grew more serious. She leaned in closer to Yvette and asked, "Yvette, did the Valdemar family deceive you? Are they refusing to give you money for Lassie's treatment?"

"No," Yvette said softly, "I changed my mind."

Sylvia was stunned, questioning, "So you're not going to let Lassie get treatment?"

"Sylvia," frowning, Yvette stated, "It might sound ridiculous to you. My mom isn't sick; she's faking it."

Sylvia was momentarily dumbfounded, questioning, "Faking it?"

"She didn't want me to divorce Albert, so she pretended to be sick, and I found out." Yvette took a deep breath. "So I changed my mind. I'm not staying with the Valdemar family. I still want to go back to school. I don't want to waste this opportunity. But my mom's fake surgery has almost drained all my money."

Sylvia's expression changed several times before she finally let out a long sigh of relief. "You scared me!" Sylvia gave Yvette a reproachful look, continuing, "If you had explained earlier, I wouldn't have been so worried. I thought you were going to ask me for money for Lassie's treatment, and I was already thinking about where to get it! So you want to borrow money to go back to school, right?"

"Yes." Yvette nodded, bracing herself. "I'll write you a promissory note."

"If you're asking me for a loan, I'm reassured." Sylvia smiled as she went on, "It means you still consider me a friend. Otherwise, someone as independent as you wouldn't ask me for money."

Then she made an "OK" gesture with her hand. "Don't worry, I have enough money for you to go back to school."

"I'm just curious, no offense. I just want to ask, if you really leave, will you still divorce Albert?" Sylvia looked at Yvette cautiously.

Yvette's eyes dimmed, and she gave a bitter smile as she said, "I don't know. My mom deceiving me about having ALS has made it impossible for me to face Albert and the Valdemar family. I just want to leave. As for the divorce, it's up to Albert."
