Chapter 623 Violet Is Hiding Something
Limping out of the Swift Mansion, David made his way back to the car, each step heavy and labored.
His body seemed barely under control, yet he fought to maintain his balance.
David approached the vehicle slowly, and his driver quickly opened the door for him.
He settled into his seat quietly, gazing out the window in contemplation. The scenery rushed past like frames in a fast-forwarded film, while he remained a silent observer.
David's penetrating eyes held deep thought, but no one could decipher what was going through his mind.
His fingers drummed lightly against his knee, creating a soft rhythm. His lips moved slightly, as if formulating plans, though no sound escaped.
Time ticked by as David remained lost in thought, motionless.
The landscape outside had blurred into indistinct shapes, while his inner contemplation continued. The air inside the car seemed to thicken, filled only with the whisper of wind against the windows and David's heavy breathing.
After what felt like an eternity, David, who had been silent throughout the journey, suddenly reached for his phone and dialed Efrain's number.
Efrain's voice came through, "Mr. Valdemar."
David's eyes narrowed slightly, his voice low and measured, "What did you find?"
When David had discovered the gaps in Yvette's medical records, he had immediately sent Efrain to investigate.
If Violet wouldn't give him answers, he'd have to find them himself.
"Following your lead, I've tracked down the Hayes family," Efrain reported seriously. "However, their people only said that since the accident, Violet has been purchasing all of Yvette's medical records at premium prices."
David's brow furrowed in displeasure. "All the records? You're telling me Violet has her complete medical history."
"That's correct."
David fell silent, deep in thought.
Why was the Hayes family always willing to hand over Yvette's medical records to her, even without keeping any copies?
What kind of arrangement did they have? And why was Violet so determined to keep this from him?
David drew a deep breath. "Why would the Hayes family give them to her? Did you find out?"
"I asked about that, but our contact isn't close enough to their inner circle to know the details."
Clearly, this would require more digging.
David's voice turned cold: "Keep investigating. Don't overlook any possibility. Understood?"
"Yes, Mr. Valdemar."
After ending the call, David sank back into contemplation.
He had learned never to trust anyone completely, especially not a mere business partner like Violet.
This mutual wariness forced him to spend precious time on investigations.
There seemed to be some undisclosed arrangement between the Hayes family and Violet.
Such dealings were blocking his path to the truth.
Violet had approached him for this partnership, yet she kept creating obstacles.
Perhaps it was time to reassess the situation.
With this thought, David called James.
James's voice came through, "David, what's up?"
"Put your preparations on hold," David's tone was ice-cold.
"What? Why?" James sounded puzzled. "Didn't you want me to rush the wedding arrangements?"
"Some people need to be reminded of their place."
Violet sat alone on the sofa, a half-empty bottle of whiskey on the table before her.
She held a crystal tumbler, the amber liquid swirling gently as she moved it. The room was heavy with the sharp scent of alcohol.
Violet's cheeks were flushed, her eyes unfocused and distant.
She drained the glass in one gulp, then reached for the bottle, tilting it slowly.
The golden liquid flowed smoothly, creating soft sounds as it hit the glass.
Violet watched the amber spirits swirl in the tumbler, forming tiny whirlpools.
A flicker of loneliness and confusion crossed her eyes—so different from the confident facade she'd shown David earlier.
She lifted the glass and took a small sip, the bitter and sweet notes dancing on her tongue. Her expression remained neutral, though her gaze had grown deeper and more contemplative.
The front door burst open as Thaddeus and Elowen rushed in.
"Violet, what was David doing here earlier? He looked furious—was he giving you trouble? What happened?" Elowen asked anxiously.
Violet frowned, looking at them through bleary eyes. "How do you know about that?"
"We saw everything!" Thaddeus said urgently. "I told you to stay away from those Valdemar brothers—you're out of your league with them!"
Violet seemed to realize something, staring at them with dawning understanding. "You're watching me?"
"It's not surveillance—the security cameras picked up unusual activity, that's how we knew," Elowen said frantically, giving Violet a shake. "Violet, tell us what happened! Don't keep your father and me in suspense!"
Violet shrugged with apparent indifference. "What's to tell? We had some disagreements. That's all."
Thaddeus pressed, "Disagreements? Simple disagreements don't make a man storm over here like that!"
Elowen chimed in, "Exactly, sweetheart! How did you manage to provoke that devil?"
Their incessant chatter was getting on Violet's nerves. She frowned and downed the rest of her drink in one gulp.
"I need to protect myself, so naturally I keep some things back. He doesn't like my reservations, so he came to confront me. It's that simple."
Violet's casual dismissal only made Thaddeus and Elowen more agitated.
"If he's unhappy with you, you need to fix it. You're the one asking for his help—you can't afford to displease him! By the way, what exactly are you hiding from him?"
At this, Violet looked up, her eyes turning cold. "What I choose to keep from him is my business—not yours."
"Of course it's our business! We need to help you weigh the pros and cons! We need to know whether keeping secrets helps you or whether telling him would be better!"
"You want to help me weigh the pros and cons?" Violet's cheeks were flushed from the alcohol as she let out a bitter laugh. "Your idea of 'pros and cons' doesn't include whether I live or die. Everything I've been through, I have you two to thank for."
Both Thaddeus and Elowen froze.
Elowen gasped. "Violet, what are you saying? How could this be our fault? Everything we've done has been for your own good."
"For my own good? Was it for my own good when you forced me to marry while I was waiting for Albert?" Violet's eyes blazed red with fury. "Otherwise, would I have ended up married to Rodolfo?"
