Chapter 130 He Wants a Divorce?
The warm yellow light in the restaurant gave a cozy glow to everyone at the table.
Yvette wasn't hungry, so she just ordered some desserts and took her time enjoying them with a small fork.
David, on the other hand, seemed pretty hungry, eating a bit faster than usual but still with grace.
"Sorry I was late," Yvette said. "I had something to do. Did I mess up your dinner plans?"
David looked up at her and shook his head. "No worries," he said with a soft smile. "I was busy today and didn't have time to eat anyway."
"Is your work really that hectic?" Yvette asked, tilting her head.
David nodded. "Yeah, there's a lot to do, especially since I just started this new job."
Yvette nodded back. "You always loved studying, and now you love working. It's so you. Unlike..."
She stopped herself, realizing she might've said too much.
David's eyes showed a hint of sadness, but he still smiled. "Yeah, Albert never liked studying and always slept in class. Who would've thought he'd love working now?"
"You've always been better than him," Yvette said, looking down at her cake. It was her favorite flavor, and she was surprised David still remembered.
"Really?" David smiled, but there was a touch of bitterness. Yvette always said he was better than Albert, but she only loved Albert. She married him despite his amnesia and even wanted kids with him. Being excellent didn't matter.
"Yes," Yvette nodded. "Even when he holds my hand, he makes excuses, saying he's afraid a pregnant woman might fall. He's not gentle at all."
David looked at her. She sounded like she was complaining, but her expression was softer than before. Under the light, her eyes were bright, her lips slightly smiling, and her face delicate and gentle.
David's throat tightened. "You two seem to be getting along well lately," he said indirectly.
Yvette blinked, thinking about Albert's recent change. He had been treating her much better. After years of indifference, she could sense his newfound attentiveness.
She looked down, feeling a bit shy. "Yes," she replied.
David felt a pang of bitterness. Yvette seemed like a girl whose feelings had finally been returned, and it was heart-wrenching.
He lowered his eyes and smiled. "That's good."
"Let's not talk about this," Yvette said, finishing her dessert. "You’re so busy but still wanted to meet. What did you want to give me?"
David clenched his fists, a look of reluctance crossing his face. He smiled and joked, "Just wanted to teach you a lesson so you'd treat me to a meal."
Banquet Hall.
The hall was luxurious, with crystal chandeliers sparkling and casting dazzling light. The musicians played enchanting music, and the well-off guests couldn't stop praising its beauty.
Violet followed her parents, feeling nervous but keeping her head high, showing off her elegant shoulders and neck.
Her dad turned to her and said, "Violet, try to be quiet, okay?"
His anxious look made her even more nervous. She nodded. "Got it."
Even her dad, a seasoned businessman, was nervous at the Valdemar family's event. This charity banquet was a big deal, and it took a lot for their family to get an invite. Violet could feel the gap between her family and the Valdemars.
Her parents went to greet some acquaintances, but Violet was distracted, scanning the room for Albert.
She picked up a glass of champagne and overheard a conversation between some elegant ladies behind her.
"Did James bring Lisa again today?"
"Yeah, after all these years, Lisa hasn't given up, and neither has James."
"Are you talking about their IVF attempts?"
"Yep, James has those two handsome twin sons, and no one else has boys like them."
"They're still trying to win over the old man. It's naive."
"Blame it on Lisa for not being able to have kids."
Violet paused for a moment, pretending to be unfazed. She took a sip of her drink, but her mind was racing.
She spotted James standing alone in a corner. Biting her lip, she lifted her dress and walked over to him.
With a surprised look, she nodded to James. "Hello, Uncle James. Long time no see. I heard from Aunt Moore you weren't feeling well, but you look great today."
James looked her over, seeing her in a pearl-white gown, all dressed up but coming to him first. He nodded, trying to remember who she was. "Not bad."
Violet smiled. "That's good. Are you here with Aunt Moore today?"
Her voice was soft and sweet, but her meaning was clear.
James looked at her a few more times before it clicked. "You're the Swift family's daughter, right?"
"Yes!" Violet looked surprised. "I didn't expect you to remember me. It's an honor."
James smirked, his smile tinged with disdain. "Of course I remember. Your father has come to see me a few times."
He also knew Violet's mom had tried to get close to Lisa to connect with Albert. Lisa had mentioned it, but he ignored it.
Violet nodded. "Yes, my father admires you and often talks about you."
James raised an eyebrow and bluntly asked, "You came to talk to me because you want to find Albert?"
Violet was taken aback, feeling exposed. "Yes, I just wanted to ask if Albert is here."
"He's not coming," James said with a contemptuous look. "But seriously, you should give up. He's decided to divorce Yvette and marry Melissa Clark, the eldest daughter of the Horizon Group."
Violet was stunned. "He's getting a divorce? Did he say that?"
