Chapter 182 Albert Tested David
David drove Yvette back home to grab some essentials, and then they headed to the supermarket. It was the perfect time for an after-dinner stroll, and the supermarket was buzzing with people.
Yvette pushed the cart, carefully picking out what she needed. David trailed behind, quietly watching her, feeling like everyone else around them had just faded into the background. David looked down, feeling a strange warmth inside.
Yvette quickly grabbed everything she needed. After they paid, they walked out of the supermarket. David carried the bags, and they walked side by side to the car.
Yvette tried to take the bags back a few times, but David dodged her every time. She sighed. "I can carry them myself. You've already helped me a lot. If you keep helping, I won't be able to repay you."
David raised an eyebrow, a slight smile on his face. "Oh really? Then I guess I should help a bit more."
Just then, David's phone rang. Yvette took the chance to grab the bags and got into the car.
In less than half a minute, David was back. His earlier relaxed smile was gone, replaced by a serious look and a slight frown. Yvette was a bit surprised. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"My grandpa's condition has worsened. He's not doing well today. I need to go to the hospital." David started the engine and hit the brakes. "Sorry, Yvette, I need to go to the hospital first. You'll have to take care of your mom on your own."
"It's okay," Yvette said softly. "My mom's condition is stable, with doctors, Wayne, and Zora keeping an eye on her. You should focus on your own matters first."
"Alright." Then he sped down the road, but the heavy traffic was a nightmare, making the usually calm David look visibly tense and anxious.
By the time they reached the hospital, half an hour had passed. David turned off the car and looked at Yvette. "Do you want to come up with me to see my grandpa?"
Yvette hesitated, biting her lip, not speaking for a while. On the way to the hospital, Yvette had thought about this but quickly dismissed it. She was about to divorce Albert, and Hayden's condition had nothing to do with her. Showing up now would just invite criticism.
Yvette shook her head. "You go ahead. It's all Valdemar family members up there. I don't think it's my place to be there."
"There's nothing wrong with it," David said, looking at Yvette. "You're still a member of the Valdemar family. Having my grandpa get familiar with you can only be a good thing."
Yvette frowned slightly. She knew David was right, but she still felt some resistance. "No," Yvette said. "You go ahead. I'll wait for you in the car."
David replied, "Alright."
As Albert walked out of the hospital room, the angry relatives gathered around him. The uncles, no longer restrained by the hospital room, turned back looking somewhat agitated.
"Since you're a Valdemar, you should understand that we are your elders!"
"We're so disappointed that you could say such things in front of Hayden!"
Loren asked curiously, "What did Albert say to make you all so angry?"
Alan Valdemar, always the one to play the "concerned son," glared at Albert. "Can you believe what Albert said? He had the nerve to tell Hayden that we were all trying to grab the money before he was even gone! He said we were already dividing it up! He actually called it the 'Valdemar family way'! What kind of talk is that?"
Everyone knew Albert was right, but nobody wanted to hear it. It was like he'd ripped the bandaid off a festering wound.
Albert's eyes swept over them, cold and detached, not wanting to stay with this group for another second. He turned to leave, but his aunts blocked his way.
"Albert, you have no right to talk about others like that."
"Exactly. You never come around, and now Hayden's sick, you're here for the cash, huh?"
"If you've got any morals, stay away from your grandpa's money!"
Albert's face remained cold. He had no interest in talking to these people. Listening to them any longer would only make him feel more disgusted.
Albert smiled mockingly. "If you want the money, take it all. I don't care." With that, Albert coldly turned to leave the hospital.
At the end of the hallway, the elevator doors slowly opened, and David stepped out. He grabbed Albert's wrist as they passed.
"Albert," David said.
Albert looked at him with displeasure and shook off his hand. Albert frowned at David. "What do you want?"
"Did you see Grandpa?" David's chest heaved as he asked.
Albert casually responded, his mind flashing back to when he left the hospital where Lassie was staying and saw Yvette and David coming out together. He smirked.
He looked at David with disdain, his eyes full of mockery. "You got here quick. Where did you come from? My mother-in-law's hospital? Or somewhere else?"
David paused, realizing that Albert knew he had been to the hospital where Lassie was staying. A hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, but he quickly suppressed it. "Traffic was bad, so I was late."
"There wasn't much traffic on my way here. I guess we came from different directions," Albert said, staring directly into David's eyes.
"Yes." David nodded openly, meeting Albert's gaze. "I took Yvette home to get some of her and her mom's things, then went to the supermarket. I came from that direction, which was the traffic-heavy route."
"Taking Yvette home" almost instantly triggered Albert. His eyebrows raised, and his demeanor darkened.
Albert glared at David, his jaw tight. "You were home for so long. Did you do what you did at the hotel?" Albert spoke each word through gritted teeth, his anger directed straight at David.
David was momentarily stunned by the anger, then realized that Albert really thought he and Yvette had done something inappropriate at the hotel.
David lowered his gaze, studying Albert with a knowing look. "No, we just went back to pack. Her mom just had surgery and is still in the ICU." But he didn't clarify that nothing had happened between him and Yvette at the hotel.
David's response finally shattered Albert's last bit of hope. He clenched his fists, feeling that David and Yvette were even more disgusting than the rest of the Valdemar family. His eyes reddened, and he sneered, "Fine, David, you got what you wanted. Yvette is yours now."
