Chapter 121 Stay Away from the Valdemar Family
Lassie saw the two walk in, thought for a second, and headed to the guest bedroom door. She knocked. "You still awake?"
"Yeah, I'm up."
Lassie pushed the door open. Wayne and Zora were propped up on their elbows. "Who's here?"
"Albert," Lassie said, glancing at the sleeping Kyle. "Wayne, can you grab a clean set of pajamas for Albert? He’s probably planning to stay the night."
"Yeah, I got a new set for him," Zora said, getting up and rummaging through the closet. "We should treat Albert well. When Wayne was discharged, it was thanks to Albert that the director arranged the hospital room for us."
"You should've told me earlier."
"I was busy with the paperwork and forgot." Zora found a new set of pajamas and handed them to Lassie. "These are new, never worn."
"Then we should treat him well," Lassie nodded seriously. "Albert's been really good to our family. He came over late after work to see Yvette and brought a lot of supplements."
Wayne, still propped up, chimed in, "I ran into a patient from the bed next to the emergency room. He kept praising my good luck for having such a good sister and brother-in-law. Seems like Yvette's really impressed Albert."
"Looks like Yvette's really married into a good family. We should make sure she and Albert get along well."
Lassie walked to the wall and pressed her ear against it, trying to hear what was happening in Yvette's room.
"Mom, it's pointless. There are two layers of walls here; unless they shout loudly, you won't hear anything."
Lassie stubbornly kept listening. "I'm just worried Yvette might say something wrong. You two took Kyle out today, so you didn't see. Albert's brother brought Yvette home today."
"He has a brother?"
"Yeah, not just a brother, but a twin who looks exactly like him."
Lassie wanted to continue but stopped, considering the seriousness of the matter.
Zora asked, surprised, "Exactly alike? They must both be good-looking!"
"Yeah, but their relationship doesn't seem great, so I'm afraid Yvette might say something wrong."
"If you really want to listen, do it when you bring the clothes over and give Yvette a look to remind her."
"Alright."
"Are you close with David?"
Hearing Albert's question, Yvette's eyes flickered. She had a feeling Albert was curious about her and David.
She looked directly into Albert's serious eyes but didn't answer directly. "What do you want to know?"
Albert stared at her, his deep eyes flickering with an unclear light. He silently pursed his lips, seemingly choosing his words carefully.
For some reason, his demeanor made Yvette feel a bit of expectation.
"The Valdemars are the Valdemars. I am who I am. It's not like pleasing the Valdemars will get you anything."
Albert's voice was low, making Yvette furious.
She had hoped he wanted to know about that summer, about their beautiful memories, but he still thought she was after the Valdemars' wealth.
Yvette laughed at herself, feeling foolish for always being sentimental.
She couldn't help but shout, "Albert, are you crazy?!"
Seeing Yvette angry, Albert realized he had said something he shouldn't have.
His jaw muscles tightened, and after a moment, he spoke stiffly, "Was David there that summer too?"
"Yes."
"So, what exactly happened then?" Albert looked at Yvette intently.
Yvette clenched her fists. She had hoped he would ask, but when he finally did, she felt it was ironic. Those were such beautiful memories, but only she remembered them.
Yvette lowered her eyes, the dim bedside lamp casting shadows on her face. "It's all unimportant now. Like you said, if you can't remember, it must not be important."
Albert didn't know how to continue questioning. Those words had indeed come from his mouth, and he had no way to refute them.
He pursed his lips into a straight line, unable to forget her obedient demeanor in front of David. He frowned and said in a deep voice, "In the future, stay away from the Valdemar family."
"I will." Yvette's voice was cold, "After the divorce, we will have no relationship, and naturally, I will stay away. If you want me to stay away sooner, just agree to the divorce."
Albert's expression changed slightly. He frowned tightly and was about to respond when there was a sudden knock on the door behind him.
The tense atmosphere between them was instantly interrupted, and their expressions became unnatural.
He composed himself and turned to open the door.
Lassie came in with a plate of freshly cut fruit. The room was dimly lit, and she glanced at the two of them but didn't notice their strange expressions.
Lassie placed the fruit and freshly brewed coffee on the table. "Try the mangoes I bought on my way back today."
"Mom, why are you making coffee so late?" Yvette was annoyed that Lassie interrupted her conversation with Albert at a crucial moment.
"Albert worked all day and still came over. He must be tired! You should be more considerate. This is decaf; it won't keep you awake." Lassie pushed the coffee towards Albert, "Albert, drink up!"
"Okay." Albert responded, raising the coffee to take a sip, earning a satisfied smile from Lassie.
"And this." Lassie handed a set of clothes to Albert. "These are Wayne's pajamas, new and freshly washed. You can wear them without worry; they're clean."
Seeing Lassie's stance, Yvette immediately looked at her defensively.
"Mom?" Yvette was impatient. "What are you doing?"
"It's so late, Albert should stay here to sleep. Otherwise, going back will affect his work tomorrow." Lassie said while giving Yvette a look to remind her.
Yvette ignored her, frowning. "He's leaving soon. Why are you giving him clothes?"
Before Yvette could finish, Albert's strong arm reached out in front of her and took the pajamas from Lassie's hand.
"Thanks, Mom."
