Chapter 216 Cheryl Talked to Yvette
Albert's face was tight. He hated being around the Valdemar family. Just as he was about to leave, he caught wind of Yvette and James signing some agreement. He always knew Yvette was in it for the cash, but it still hit him hard. Albert's eyes were cold, like winter ice.
From a distance, David spotted Albert and headed his way. Albert frowned and moved away from where he could hear James and Yvette talking. David stopped next to Albert and asked, "What's up?"
Albert knew David had noticed his change in mood, so he brushed it off. "It's too noisy."
David frowned, a hint of annoyance in his voice. "If you're back with the Valdemar family, you gotta deal with all this."
"You're wrong," Albert shot back, looking at David coolly. "I haven't come back to the Valdemar family. I just accepted Grandpa naming me as the heir and took the inheritance. No one said inheriting the Valdemar Group means I have to be part of the family."
David gave Albert a long look. He had come back to the Valdemar family to secure that heir spot for himself. But without lifting a finger, Albert had already snagged it.
Albert treated Yvette like dirt, but she still loved him. Even on the brink of divorce, she could still hook up with him. He and Albert were twins, and even though he worked harder and took on more responsibilities, Albert always got everything.
David lowered his eyes, hiding his changing expression. He should be used to it by now. It had always been this way since they were kids. David took a deep breath and forced a smile, "You're right."
At noon, sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, filling the Valdemar Villa with warmth.
After a rough night's sleep, Yvette felt drowsy after lunch. Seeing Cheryl head to her room for a nap, Yvette quickly went back to her own room and curled up in bed. She didn't bother with the curtains and buried her head under the covers.
Just as she was about to drift off, a commotion came from the next room. Yvette woke up and lazily opened her eyes. Hearing James and Lisa arguing, she was instantly alert.
Yvette carefully walked to the door, hoping to eavesdrop. Maybe she could find a way to get out of the contract James had tricked her into signing.
The argument was heated. "I'm fine with Mom staying with us, but why does the whole Valdemar family have to come over all the time? You're always tired, and we don't even have sex at night!" Lisa's voice was full of frustration.
But James replied, "Now that Dad is dead, we don't need any more children. But Mom still has a lot of assets. Do you want to kick her out?"
Lisa's voice was shaky with tears. "She calls for a talk one by one, and you just relay the messages?"
"Whatever Mom says or does now, we have to go along with it," James said quietly. "Alright, you know there are a lot of people at home, so let's drop this. We'll talk in our room later."
Yvette was mulling over their conversation when someone suddenly banged on the door. Startled, she took a step back.
"Yvette, you in there?" James's annoyed voice came through. "Come out for a sec."
Yvette hesitated for a moment, then opened the door, pretending to be groggy. "What do you need? I was napping."
James said, "My mom wants to see you. Watch what you say."
Nodding and rubbing her eyes, Yvette replied, "Got it." She thought Cheryl had gone to rest, but when she entered the room, she saw Cheryl talking to family members one by one.
Yvette walked up to Cheryl, nervously fidgeting with her fingers. "Grandma, did you need something?"
"I just want to ask you one thing," Cheryl looked at Yvette sharply. "Did you marry Albert because you were pregnant?"
Yvette lowered her eyes. "Yes, but that child didn't make it."
Cheryl looked Yvette up and down. "I already know the general situation. When Albert got married, I thought he would choose a woman he truly loved. He has always followed his heart and never considered the pros and cons."
Yvette knew Cheryl was talking about Violet. Everyone thought they were the perfect match. After being together for so many years, they should have married for love.
Yvette felt a pang of bitterness. If she had known it would come to this, she wouldn't have approached Albert so humbly because of her love for him and the memories only she cherished.
"I will be watching you," Cheryl said coldly. "No one can harm the Valdemar family."
Yvette lowered her eyes. She had almost hurt Albert because of a contract. She couldn't argue and said, "Understood."
Maybe Cheryl's talk had an effect. At dinner, Yvette saw Albert sitting at the table with an empty wine glass in front of him.
When Yvette came down, the servant led her to the far end of the table. Everyone else sat with their partners, but Yvette, unappreciated, was always left to sit alone at the back.
Yvette sat down quietly, waiting for Cheryl to join them. At that moment, Albert's cousin, Andrew Valdemar, stood up and picked up a freshly opened bottle of wine. "I'll pour everyone a drink. Grandma said we should drink to our heart's content today. The rooms are ready, and anyone who gets drunk will be taken directly to their room."
Everyone laughed and accepted the wine, but when it came to Albert, he raised his hand to block the glass. "I'll drink water."
"That's no fun. Even the elders are drinking. Why won't you?"
Albert gave him a cold look. "I said I won't."
The atmosphere instantly turned icy, and everyone's eyes were on the two of them.
As the eldest son of the family, Andrew's face turned sour after being contradicted in front of so many family members. Just as he was about to snap, Cheryl had already taken her seat. She said, "Albert, have a drink with me."
Albert's expression remained indifferent, but he didn't refuse Cheryl's request and withdrew his hand from the glass. Cheryl suddenly glanced at Yvette, who had stood up abruptly, asking, "Do you want to drink with me too?"
