Chapter 109 You Absolutely Cannot Harass Her!
The ward felt heavy, but getting Wayne admitted was a relief.
By the time Wayne was settled in, it was late. The sky outside was pitch black, lit only by the cold moonlight. Yvette let out a heavy sigh, finally feeling a bit of relief.
She rubbed her sore lower back. "Zora, it's gonna be a rough night for you."
"This is what I should do."
Yvette nodded and was about to call Lassie to leave, but Lassie waved her off. "Kyle and I will stay here with you. We won't sleep well if we go back."
Yvette knew Lassie was worried. Since it was a private room with space to sleep, she didn't push them to leave.
"Alright. I'll head out then."
"Albert's taking you, right?"
"He's waiting outside."
Just as Yvette finished speaking, Zora hurried over.
"Yvette, thank you so much for today. I'm not very knowledgeable about this, and every time Wayne faints, I panic and don't know what to do." Zora's eyes reddened as she spoke.
Seeing Zora's guilty look, Yvette softened a bit. "Just take good care of Wayne tonight. He's already admitted, so there's no need to panic."
"Check your account when you get home. I wasn't sure how much was needed, so I sent you some money. If it's not enough, I'll send more."
Zora sighed. "Give the money to Albert. Don't use his money. You're the most capable in our family, and Wayne always says he doesn't want to burden you or tarnish your reputation in Albert's eyes for his issues."
Yvette was taken aback, her eyes instantly feeling sore. She blinked. "I'll give it to him, don't worry."
Zora hesitated several times but finally couldn't hold back. "Albert didn't, did he?"
"No, don't overthink it. Wayne's health is more important."
Listening to their conversation, Lassie couldn't help but tear up. She walked over and held Yvette's hand, giving it a squeeze.
"Mom was too anxious earlier and might not have treated you well. Don't blame her," Lassie said, tears welling up again. "You two are both my children. One is healthy, the other is not. One is capable, the other is not. As a mother, I always feel guilty for the weaker one."
Lassie wiped her tears. "You're about to become a mother yourself. I believe you can understand."
Lassie's crying still made Yvette feel annoyed. But her words hit Yvette's most sensitive spot. Yvette bit her lip, trying to suppress the emotions surging in her chest.
"Mom, it's quite late now. I need to go."
Yvette didn't respond to Lassie's words and almost cruelly pulled her hand away.
But only Yvette knew that she couldn't help but soften again.
Outside the window, the sky was dotted with stars, and the car lights on the ground formed long lines.
Yvette leaned wearily against the car window, blocking out the occasional urgent honking from outside, and closed her eyes to rest.
The atmosphere in the car was quiet. Neither of them spoke, but it didn't feel awkward.
It wasn't until Albert parked the car downstairs at Yvette's place that she slowly opened her eyes, which were now bloodshot and full of fatigue.
Yvette opened the car door herself and got out, saying softly, "Thanks for today. I'll go now."
Albert didn't mind at all and turned off the car, locking it. "You're alone at home tonight and have to climb the stairs. I'll walk you up."
Yvette opened her mouth but, for some reason, didn't refuse.
They walked in silence, side by side. Albert slowed his pace to match Yvette's, climbing the stairs step by step.
In the narrow stairwell, they were very close. Yvette could even smell the familiar scent on Albert.
Albert was still in his uniform. He had spent the whole day at the hospital for her.
Yvette climbed the stairs, which usually seemed so high, quickly today. Standing at the door, Yvette suddenly felt a bit awkward.
Should she invite him in for a cup of coffee?
Yvette inserted the key into the lock but hesitated to turn it, finding it hard to speak.
Her actions were slow, unlike her usual behavior. Albert noticed her discomfort and took a step back.
"Go on in. I'll leave now."
"Okay." Yvette bit her lip. "Be safe on your way back."
After saying that, Yvette quickly turned the key and went inside, then closed the door, leaning heavily against it.
Her life was always like this. On one hand, she was extremely annoyed by the Orlando family's issues that drove her crazy, but on the other hand, she couldn't let go of her closest people, knowing they had their difficulties. She wanted to escape from Albert and divorce him, but she couldn't bear to leave him.
Her thoughts were always full of contradictions.
Yvette hugged herself, gently rubbing her arms, and looked up in confusion.
What should she do?
Outside the door, Albert stood awkwardly.
After a long time, Albert finally reacted. He looked down at his tightly clenched fist and slowly opened his palm, revealing some damp sweat.
Was he nervous?
He could actually get nervous.
Albert drove home, and suddenly his phone rang in the car. He glanced at it; it was an unfamiliar number.
He casually answered, "Who is this?"
"Albert, you don't even answer your dad's calls. Do I have to change my number for you to pick up?!"
Albert frowned slightly. He knew this call was coming but didn't expect it so soon.
James mocked, "If Mr. Anderson hadn't called me, I wouldn't even know about my own son. You're really something, Albert!"
"Thanks for the compliment. I'm hanging up," Albert responded indifferently, raising his hand to hang up.
Hearing this, James got even angrier. "Albert, if you have the guts, stop using the family's connections! You use them and still act like this?"
Albert's brow twitched, and he took a deep breath. "What do you want?"
"When did you get married? Who did you marry? Are you just trying to piss me off? My son got married, and I had to hear it from someone else. It's embarrassing!"
"My marriage has nothing to do with you."
"Bring her home. I want to meet her."
"Not gonna happen."
James paused for two seconds, and their previously angry voice suddenly turned cold. "Do you think I can't find out who you married if you don't tell me?"
Albert's back tensed, and he suddenly slammed on the brakes.
The car screeched to a halt, the prolonged braking sound extremely harsh.
Ignoring the honking and cursing from the cars behind, Albert leaned closer to the phone, his voice icy, almost squeezing out the words through gritted teeth. "You absolutely cannot harass her!"
