Chapter 192 Lassie Woke Up
Lassie was on the mend, and the doc had her moved from the ICU to a private room. Finally, Yvette could see her. But Lassie was still pretty wiped out and dozed off again as soon as she got settled.
Yvette straightened up the room, noticing Wayne nodding off. She pointed to the nearby sofa, saying, "Wayne, if you're tired, crash over there. I'll stay with Mom."
Wayne glanced at Lassie by the bed, then plopped down on the sofa, letting out a long sigh. "Your friend is something else. Not only did he get Dr. Martinez, but he also scored us a private room."
Thinking of David, who had been a rock for her, Yvette felt a pang of guilt. So much chaos had been going on that she hadn't had the chance to thank David properly.
Yvette nodded. "Yeah, we need to thank him big time when we get the chance." She pulled up a chair and sat by Lassie's bed, bringing a basin of warm water to wipe her hands and face.
Lassie's hands were a bit rough, showing her age. Emotions were very intricate. Yvette always had this mix of resentment and love for her mom.
Holding a warm, wet towel, Yvette finished wiping Lassie's hands when Lassie suddenly let out a pained moan. Yvette immediately put down the towel and leaned in, whispering, "Mom, you awake?"
Lassie slowly opened her eyes. Her originally confused and dull eyes only slightly brightened when she saw Yvette.
She hadn't seen her family for a long time. Every time she opened her eyes, the bedside was empty or there was a strange nurse, so the fear and anxiety almost overwhelmed her. Luckily, she finally saw Yvette, her daughter who could bring her peace.
Lassie blinked and softly said, "Yvette."
"Mom, how are you feeling?" Yvette was a bit excited but tried to hold back, fearing her reaction might scare Lassie. "Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?"
"My head hurts." Lassie didn't dare move her head, only blinking and moving her mouth. "Yvette, I'm not gonna die, right?"
"Don't say that!" Yvette's eyes welled up as she said, "Of course not. Your surgery was a success. As long as you rest well, you'll be back on your feet soon."
"That's good." Lassie sighed. "I almost thought I was going to die and see your father."
Hearing Lassie mention her father, Yvette was stunned, and her eyes quickly reddened. Yvette blinked hard, holding back the urge to cry and saying, "Don't say that. Get better soon; there's still a lot at home that needs you."
Lassie's gaze was a bit vacant, as if she couldn't remember what needed her attention at home. After a while, she finally furrowed her brows, questioning, "Yvette, have you reconciled with Albert?"
Yvette didn't expect the first thing Lassie would ask upon waking up was about her marriage with Albert, and she didn't know how to respond.
Seeing Yvette's expression, Lassie became visibly anxious. "Have you gotten the divorce papers?"
"Not yet." Yvette thought for a moment. "It should be time to get them soon; the cooling-off period is almost over."
"You can't get divorced," Lassie insisted, but the headache forced her to stop, and she took a deep breath.
Yvette was startled, asking, "Are you okay? Don't get worked up now. We'll talk about this when you're better, okay?"
Lassie opened her mouth but didn't dare get agitated for the sake of her health. Her expression was strange, and she looked at Yvette several times, seemingly planning something. Just as Yvette felt something was off with Lassie, her phone rang.
Yvette didn't have time to think about Lassie's odd behavior. Seeing it was a call from David, she quickly stepped out of the room to answer. "David?"
On the other end, David was browsing a fruit store, carefully selecting items, and asked casually, "Yvette, how's your mom doing today?"
"Pretty good." Yvette's voice was relatively relaxed, "She just moved to a private room today. I was about to call to thank you."
David paused, a slight unnaturalness flashing across his face, but he quickly brushed it off. David chuckled softly as he said, "Don't mention it. As long as your mom is comfortable. I'll come to the hospital later to see her. Send me the room number."
Yvette politely declined, "No need to trouble yourself with an extra trip."
"I don't think so." David said seriously, "It's a big deal that your mom is out of the ICU and can have visitors. I have to come see her. How's her spirit?"
"Also good. We were just chatting." Seeing his determination, Yvette didn't stop him. "Call me when you get here, and I'll come down to get you."
"Okay." After hanging up, David picked some fruits suitable for patients and was heading to the checkout when a cautious voice came from behind. "Excuse me, are you David?"
David turned around, and a strange woman appeared before him. He asked, "Yes, may I ask who you are?"
"My name is Sissy!" Sissy's eyes sparkled as she looked at David. "When you flew back, I mistook you for Albert and made a bit of a scene."
David remembered the small incident on his flight back. He smiled warmly as he said, "Nice to meet you, Sissy."
Sissy was thrilled. "I can't believe I ran into you again. What luck!"
David smiled politely but didn't engage further. Sissy had to continue the conversation, "You bought so much fruit; is it for someone?"
"Yes." David glanced at the fruit basket in his hand and went on, "A friend's mother had surgery, so I'm going to visit."
Sissy immediately thought of what Violet had told her about Yvette's situation and asked, "Is it Yvette's mom?"
David was a bit surprised. "You know Yvette?"
"Of course, we used to be colleagues." Sissy smiled but was a bit displeased by how David affectionately called Yvette. She said, "We haven't seen each other much since she left the job."
Sissy took out her phone and showed David a photo. "But I saw her at the pharmacy a few days ago!"
David glanced at Sissy's phone, not intending to look closely, but he couldn't take his eyes off what Yvette was holding.
David's face darkened uncontrollably, recalling the phone call with Yvette that day, her tearful voice, and the male voice in the background. Almost simultaneously, he realized the owner was Albert.
