Chapter 256 Prenuptial Agreement

When it was time to eat, Cheryl sat at the dining table, surrounded by dishes, but she was the only one there.

Cheryl was a bit puzzled. She picked up a fork and asked, "Isn't Albert supposed to come back today? Where is he?"

"Mr. Valdemar came back not long ago and then left again. He didn't say where he was going," the servant thought for a moment and added, "He didn't seem to be in great spirits when he left. I wonder if he had a disagreement with Mrs. Valdemar."

"It's unlikely to be a quarrel," another servant remarked while setting a bowl of soup in front of Cheryl. "Mr. Valdemar said he had a meeting to attend later. It might be work-related."

"I see." Cheryl didn't think much of it. She glanced upstairs, put down her fork, and stood up. "I'll go check on why Yvette hasn't come down for dinner."

"I just asked. Mrs. Valdemar said she wasn't feeling well and wouldn't be eating," the servant explained. "I noticed she didn't look too good either, which is why I thought they might have had a fight."

Cheryl furrowed her brows, deep in thought.

At a Law Firm.

"Excuse me, I need to send an email first," said Attorney Sawyer Bell.

"Take your time."

Yvette sat on the sofa, her hands clasped on her lap, watching Sawyer's fingers fly across the keyboard with a calm expression.

After a while, Yvette stood up and walked to the large floor-to-ceiling window of the office, looking at the leaves swaying in the wind below, absentmindedly waiting.

Sawyer was a lawyer introduced by a classmate of Yvette.

To better protect Albert's assets, Yvette had told him everything about their current situation.

After listening, Sawyer suggested signing a prenuptial agreement.

As long as the prenuptial agreement was signed, Yvette wouldn't be able to claim Albert's assets, and James's dirty schemes would fall through.

The office was extremely quiet, with only Yvette's slightly erratic breathing and the sound of Sawyer typing.

Until Sawyer's voice broke the silence, causing Yvette's heart to skip a beat.

"Ms. Orlando, I've sent it. I've drafted your prenuptial agreement. You can come over and take a look."

Yvette looked at the densely packed text on the computer screen and roughly understood.

She nodded. "Got it."

Sawyer quickly printed it out.

Holding the printed prenuptial agreement, Yvette looked up and asked, "As long as I sign and fingerprint it and give it to the other party, the agreement will be officially effective, right?"

"Yes," Sawyer's voice was calm, but he hesitated, "But are you sure you want to sign it? You need to know that this means giving up all pre-marital and post-marital assets and joint income."

Yvette responded almost without hesitation, "I don't need his money."

As long as she had no joint assets with Albert, James couldn't threaten her. If the agreed-upon items didn't exist, what effect would they have?

Sawyer said, "Hey, as your attorney and a buddy of your friend, just gotta remind you.. Once you sign this prenup, you're kinda stuck. Chances are, if you split later, you won't see a dime. Regrets won't help then.."

After a pause, he added, "Don't count on people being all sunshine and rainbows."

Yvette replied right away, "Got it, thanks. But I'm gonna have to go ahead and sign it."

"Alright." Sawyer's voice went back to its usual calm, emotionless tone. "Two copies, one for each party, and it will be effective."

"Thanks again." Yvette put away the agreement and left the law firm.

Back at the Valdemar Villa, Yvette signed the prenuptial agreement.

Yvette nervously dialed Albert's number, wanting him to sign the agreement as soon as possible.

The call connected.

Albert's voice was ice-cold. "Why are you calling?"

Yvette tried to ignore the disdain in his voice. "I went to see a lawyer..."

"I also went to see a lawyer," Albert cut her off, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Yvette, do you really think the lawyers you find can beat the Valdemar family's lawyers? Stop your futile struggles."

A trace of helplessness flashed in Yvette's eyes. "I'm not like that..."

Albert, clearly fed up, interrupted her again. "Between us, there's only a marriage certificate. We haven't even lived together. You can stay at the Valdemar Villa if you want, but don't expect to get any money from me that you don't deserve."

"Can you listen to me for a moment?" Yvette's voice trembled with urgency.

Albert's voice was merciless. "The inheritance I received was a directed gift from my grandfather. Even if you're my legal wife, it has nothing to do with you. Tell James that he will pay for his greed."

Yvette's heart sank. It turned out she didn't need to do any of this. Albert had his own ways to protect himself.

Everything she had done felt like a joke.

Yvette's lips moved slightly, her voice hoarse. "That's good."

"Now, do you feel disappointed?" Albert sneered. "All your scheming, and it was for nothing. Yvette, this is the result of you trying to manipulate me."

Albert didn't give her a chance to explain and hung up the phone.

Listening to the cold dial tone, Yvette's heart felt like it had fallen into an ice pit.

Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door, and Yvette caught Cheryl's voice. "Hey Yvette, open up, it's me."Yvette quickly composed herself.

"On my way." Yvette swung the door open, met by Cheryl's worried expression.

Yvette's heart softened, and the pain surged up instantly.

"Grandma."

"Why do you look like that?" Cheryl asked worriedly, "Are you feeling unwell?"

Yvette lowered her eyes, her long lashes drooping slightly. "I'm fine."

"Did you have a fight with Albert?"

Cheryl was old and not in good health. Yvette didn't want her to worry, so she lied, "No."

"Don't push yourself too much." Cheryl frowned. "What's going on? Talk to me."

Yvette's throat tightened, but she didn't know where to start.

Cheryl sighed and comforted her. "Albert can be very harsh with his words. When he's angry, he says the most hurtful things. If you really had a fight and he said something unpleasant, I'm sorry for that, and we'll deal with him when he gets back."

Yvette thought she could control her emotions, but Cheryl's few words of concern made her nose tingle and brought instant tears to her eyes.

Yvette shook her head, holding back her sobs. "Albert won't come back, and he won't trust me anymore."

"So what if he doesn't come back? You go find him!" Cheryl hurriedly wiped Yvette's tears. "Why give up so easily? Is that all your feelings for him amount to? Just a little misunderstanding, and you're afraid to approach him?"
