Chapter 213 Yvette Is Forced to Stay

Yvette didn't care about the inheritance. She didn't need any of it; it was never hers to begin with. Giving it all to Albert felt like the right thing to do.

So, when she first saw the contract, she didn't see any issues. It gave Albert some security, and she was cool with that. But she hadn't expected that the supplementary clause would allocate this half of the shares to James.

Yvette was floored. She snatched the contract and flipped through it. Yep, she'd been played. She couldn't believe it. She felt dizzy. At the time, she was solely focused on whether it would harm Albert or set a deadline for her to have a child with him, completely unaware of such a significant trap. After all, Lassie's ALS had made Yvette never consider that she wouldn't need the money, so she naturally overlooked the consequences of backing out.

Yvette clutched the agreement tightly. She snapped, "Did you do this on purpose?"

"Of course not," James said with a shrug, leaning back in his chair. "I just think things through more thoroughly."

A wave of nausea hit her, making it hard to breathe. She clutched her chest instinctively. Yvette gritted her teeth and glared at James. "What's your game here?"

"My game?" James chuckled. "You came to me for help. I agreed to everything and paid the money. I'm just protecting my interests. What's the problem?"

Yvette started shaking uncontrollably. James seemed to enjoy having the upper hand. He looked at Yvette and said, "So, here's my advice. It's not that bad. If you don't want me to take the shares, just stay with the Valdemar family and have a kid with Albert."

Yvette's eyes burned with anger as she glared at James. James wasn't scared at all. In fact, he smirked even more. "I'll still pay for your mom's treatment. Even if you want to spend money, I'll give it to you. You can enjoy it however you want. It's a sweet deal! Many people would kill for this. What's your problem?"

Yvette closed her eyes in despair. Lassie always said she was smart, but now Yvette felt like a fool. Dealing with a slick businessman wasn't something a straightforward, bookish doctor could handle easily. No matter how careful she was, no matter how many times she checked, there were always traps.

Yvette had been too desperate to save Lassie and missed some things. When she opened her eyes again, they were empty. She looked at James and said, "I'll stay with the Valdemar family. Just leave Albert's stuff alone."

"Of course." James nodded. "I'm always honest and keep my word."

Yvette looked away. It took her a long time to finally calm down and accept reality. Looking at her packed luggage, Yvette felt nothing but irony.

She had naively thought she could gain her freedom, but she forgot that the moment Lassie asked Albert for money, her freedom was gone. No, it was even earlier than that. When Yvette accepted Wayne's money for her education, she lost her freedom.

Yvette stared blankly at everything in the room, her body stiff as she unpacked her things and put them back where they belonged. Everything in the room seemed to mock her.

She didn't know how long she had slept when a knock on the door woke her up. When she opened her eyes, it was already pitch black outside. A tightness gripped her chest, and she swallowed hard, struggling to catch her breath.

The knocking came again, and Yvette finally responded, raising her voice. "What is it?"

A servant's voice came from outside. "You need to come out. Mrs. Cheryl Valdemar has returned from abroad."

'Cheryl?' Yvette thought, pursing her lips, not immediately recognizing the name.

After washing her face and rinsing her mouth, Yvette walked out of the room. Looking down from upstairs, she saw an elderly woman sitting downstairs, surrounded by the Valdemar family.

Seeing the elderly woman with white hair but a lively and healthy complexion, Yvette knew she was Cheryl, a legendary figure in the Valdemar family.

Yvette was late. Many people were already gathered downstairs. She quietly went down and stood on the outer edge of the crowd, trying to be as invisible as possible.

A gaze fell on her, and Yvette looked up, meeting Albert's slightly cold eyes. Yvette remembered the contract with James that almost harmed Albert and instinctively lowered her eyes, looking away.

At that moment, Cheryl's dissatisfied voice rang out. "Albert, I'm talking to you. What are you looking at?"

As she spoke, Cheryl followed Albert's gaze and looked at Yvette. Cheryl's eyes instantly turned cold as she said, "Who is that?"

Cheryl's tone was one of feigned ignorance, and a servant immediately responded, "That's Mr. Albert Valdemar's wife, Mrs. Yvette Valdemar."

"Did I ask you?" Cheryl glared at the servant, saying, "I don't care what her name is."

Yvette lowered her head, trying to minimize her presence, but someone suddenly pushed her.

Yvette stumbled and almost fell in front of Cheryl. She closed her eyes, bracing for the pain, but unexpectedly fell into a broad chest. The familiar scent instantly filled Yvette's senses, giving her an inexplicable sense of security.

Yvette lifted her eyelids and met Albert's gaze. Before she could react, Albert had already steadied her and then withdrew his hand. It was as if he didn't want to touch her at all.

Despite having seen his disdainful gaze many times, Yvette still felt a pang in her chest. She pursed her lips, took a deep breath, and respectfully greeted, "Grandma."

Cheryl frowned, looking Yvette up and down with displeasure. She exclaimed with dissatisfaction, "Who allowed you to call me Grandma?"

Yvette choked, surrounded by people from the Valdemar family who were watching the drama unfold. A slight tingling sensation spread across her scalp, leaving her at a loss for words. But before she could say anything, Albert spoke first.

"Grandma, she is my legal wife." Albert's deep voice slowly reached her ears. "Of course, she should call you Grandma."
