Chapter 136 Let Me Help You
In the noisy emergency room, Yvette's ears suddenly felt like they had been muted, and she couldn't hear any sound.
Instinctively, she withdrew her hand from the curtain and touched her belly.
Sharon thought, 'It turns out my baby isn't developing well.'
As her consciousness gradually returned, Yvette heard David's response outside. "Is there really no other way? Can I at least find out how far along she is before we talk about surgery?"
Yvette sensed David's difficulty and lifted the curtain.
Yvette's face was pale, but her expression was unusually calm. She walked up to the doctor and softly said, "Doctor, by my count, this baby is about nine weeks. What the ultrasound say?"
Yvette paused and added, "I'm a doctor too."
"You're a doctor and didn't notice this?" The doctor frowned. "Around eight weeks, it should be clear. Didn't you have regular prenatal checkups? The ultrasound shows no fetal heartbeat or embryo. It's hard to save this baby."
"I've been very busy with work lately, so I missed the last checkup." Yvette pressed her lips together, a hint of bitterness flashing across her mouth. "Thank you, doctor. I understand my situation and will arrange for the surgery."
Noticing that she could accept the surgery, the doctor's expression softened a bit. He nodded and said, "Alright, you should get it done while it's still manageable."
"Okay."
After the doctor hurriedly left, Yvette turned around and met David's worried gaze.
David's eyes were filled with pain and concern.
David wanted to comfort her and ask, "Are you okay?" But Yvette had always been strong-willed, and he didn't dare show his worry, fearing it would affect her.
After much deliberation, David finally spoke softly, "Don't worry. I'll find some experts to discuss it and find another way. Maybe there's still hope."
"No need!" Yvette waved her hand with a smile. "I'm a doctor myself. I know that if there's no embryo at this stage, it means the fetus has stopped developing. I'm fine. Maybe I just can't keep this baby. I've had too many IVs; I need to use the restroom."
Yvette lowered her eyes and walked towards the restroom.
The hospital restroom was always crowded. Yvette looked at the long line and felt a wave of helplessness.
Standing among the crowd, her chest heaving, Yvette finally faced the reality of losing her baby.
She would lose the baby in her belly, and there was no way to save it.
Her eyes instantly welled up. She stepped out of the line and stood by the window in the fire escape.
Watching the hurried people coming and going below, she ran her fingers through her hair, trying to clear her chaotic thoughts.
Yvette took out her phone from her bag, which had long been dead. As soon as she plugged in the power bank and turned on the phone, a message from Sylvia came through.
Sylvia: [Yvette, y is ur phone off? Albert's been looking 4 u and even came 2 me. Call him back ASAP when u c this.]
Yvette exited the Facebook interface and looked at the distant tree branches swaying in the wind.
Yvette thought, 'Albert is probably coming to urge me to deal with the baby.'
Now there was no need to urge. Even if she wanted to keep it, she couldn't.
Her heart tightened slightly, and a wave of sadness filled Yvette's heart.
She had been prepared to overcome all obstacles and raise the child well, regardless of what would ended up happening with Albert.
Now, as Albert wished, the baby was gone, and they would divorce.
Just then, Yvette's phone rang. It was Lassie. She answered it casually.
Lassie inquired, "Yvette, why haven't you come back yet? Albert said he went to find you. Did you meet?"
Yvette slowly exhaled and, thinking about the upcoming surgery and the recovery time needed, said, "Mom, I forgot to tell you. I'm on a business trip today, so I turned off my phone while on the plane."
"You're on a business trip?" Lassie's sharp voice came through. "How can your company send a pregnant woman on a business trip? How long will you be gone?"
Yvette replied, "A week."
Lassie was dissatisfied. "You..."
"Enough, Mom!" Yvette interrupted, "I'm tired. I need to rest for a while."
With that, Yvette hung up the phone.
Putting away her phone, Yvette was about to find the doctor to get the examination and surgery forms when she caught a familiar figure downstairs out of the corner of her eye.
It was a professor Mr. Wilson had previously introduced to her.
Yvette paused. The medical standards here were top-notch, but there were too many acquaintances. She couldn't have the surgery here.
Yvette made a quick decision and called Wyatt.
Wyatt seemed a bit surprised and, after a moment, asked, "Yvette? What made you call me today?"
"I need your help." Yvette didn't exchange pleasantries. "I am in Center Hospital for a checkup due to health reasons and found out the fetus has stopped developing. I need to have an abortion."
Wyatt was stunned for two seconds, then quickly dropped his teasing tone and asked seriously, "Tell me, what do you need me to do?"
Yvette finally felt relieved. If Wyatt said he would help, he definitely would. "Mr. Wilson had previously introduced me to Center Hospital, hoping I could study here after leaving the Medical Evaluation Center. So, many people here know me. I want you to help me find a hospital farther away where I don't know anyone to have the surgery."
Before Wyatt could respond, Yvette's phone was snatched away.
Yvette turned around in surprise and saw David hanging up her call.
David looked at her intently. "Don't worry about the hospital transfer. I'll take care of it."
Yvette nodded and forced a smile. "No need. I'm a doctor myself. I can just contact some classmates or friends."
"Yvette." David's deep eyes glimmered with a hidden light. "You don't have to pretend fine in front of me."
"This isn't pretending." Yvette shrugged indifferently. "This is a minor surgery. Although it does some harm to the body, finding a good doctor will help with a quick recovery. It's better to have the surgery asap than to delay it."
Yvette used the usual words doctors say to patients, hoping to reassure David.
But David's eyes seemed to look straight into her soul.
David's voice was slightly hoarse. "Yvette, I can pretend I don't know anything. If you don't want to see me, I can stay away. But please let me help you."
Yvette was overwhelmed with emotions, wanting to say many things. In the end, she choked out, "Thank you."
