Chapter 332 The True Face of David
Yvette hurried to the address Virgil had sent her, which turned out to be a bubble tea shop tucked away in an alley.
Feeling a bit suspicious, she looked around and noticed a scruffy, unkempt guy with a stubbly chin heading her way. He looked like he’d hit rock bottom.
Taking a closer look, Yvette realized it was Virgil.
He was a far cry from the well-dressed, sophisticated man who used to be by David's side.
Virgil walked up to Yvette, grabbed her shoulders, and asked in a low voice, "Where's David?"
Yvette was stunned and instinctively asked, "Didn't you go back to Stellaria first?"
Virgil's eyes widened with rage, and he laughed maniacally. "Go back to Stellaria? David never intended for me to return to Stellaria alive! Ever since I left his side, he's been sending people to kill me!"
Yvette was shocked. "How is that possible?"
"It's the truth!" Virgil's face twisted with anger. "He made me take the fall for drugging you and gave me some money to go back to Stellaria. But after I took the blame, all I got was endless pursuit! Where is he? I want to ask him, after all these years of loyalty, how have I wronged him? Why doesn't he trust me to keep his secret and instead wants to kill me?"
Yvette looked at him in disbelief, doubting her ears. "What? What are you talking about?"
Virgil said, "The aphrodisiac you were given, it was David who did it himself!"
His words left Yvette completely stunned.
She said, "How is that possible?"
"It was him!" Virgil decided to spill everything, "He was afraid that the drugging would affect your relationship, so he called me over that night to get our stories straight. All those accusations against you, he taught me word for word, making me practice all night. He said that as long as you heard them, you would feel guilty, think you wronged him, and wouldn't leave him!"
What Virgil said completely overturned Yvette's understanding. Her body trembled uncontrollably, feeling as if a huge stone was pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Virgil sneered. "He said that only this way would you obediently stay by his side. He did all this just to control you! Since he wants my life, I won't let him have it easy either!"
Feeling a buzzing in her head, Yvette reflected on her guilt towards David. Even when he deceived her into marriage, she saw it as him trying to help her. Remembering everything, she chose to continue as Jessica and start anew with him. But it was all a lie.
Yvette's hands dug into her palms, her nails almost piercing the flesh.
She said, "What do you want me to do?"
Virgil said bitterly, "I've followed him for so many years, and he wants my life. You better watch out for yourself. He has no feelings for anyone; he's like a cold-blooded beast!"
Virgil composed himself. "If he comes back, tell him to stop. I'm not stupid; I have a backup plan. I have things that he fears! If he pushes me to the limit and I die, those things will be exposed!"Then he left.
Yvette sat on a plastic stool at the bubble tea shop entrance, feeling completely lost.
Dragging her tired body, Yvette finally made her way back home.
BoBo and CiCi were out at the amusement park with the housekeeper, so the house was empty. Yvette curled up on the sofa, trying to clear her mind.
Her phone rang; it was a video call from David.
Yvette felt a wave of resistance but, after a few seconds, decided to answer.
"Yvette." David's face appeared on the screen, smiling gently as always. "Where are BoBo and CiCi? Do they miss me?"
Yvette replied indifferently, "They went out with the housekeeper."
David said, "I heard it's going to get colder in Luken these days. You and the kids should keep warm and not get sick while I'm away."
"Okay." Yvette responded casually, not really engaging in the conversation.
Sensing Yvette's coldness, David softened his tone. "Everything is going well here. The doctors have confirmed the surgery plan, and once my condition improves a bit, I'll be ready for surgery. We're close to victory and close to bringing you all home."
Listening to David's words, Yvette felt increasingly repulsed and couldn't keep up the pretense any longer.
"David." Yvette said coldly, "Is Virgil with you? I haven't seen him in a while."
Yvette watched David's face on the screen, and sure enough, a flash of panic crossed his face before he quickly regained composure.
David's voice still carried a smile. "Did he find you? Did he say a lot of bad things about me?"
Yvette asked, "So you know everything?"
He really did such terrible things to others, even murder!
David's voice turned serious. "What did he tell you?"
Yvette stared into his eyes. "He said someone is trying to kill him, and he's been hiding, very pitiful."
David's expression remained normal, but his facial muscles tightened slightly. "He must have said it was me trying to kill him. He was caught stealing company secrets and was fired. He holds a grudge and can say anything."
Yvette knew he was trying to confuse her and didn't want to beat around the bush anymore.
She stared at his face in the video and slowly said, "David, the drug that night, it was you who did it, wasn't it?"
David's smile slowly faded, his eyes darkening as his lips pressed tightly together in silence.
Yvette asked again, "Answer me, was it?"
David's face darkened slightly. "Yes."
Yvette's back felt like it was being pricked by needles. Even though she had already broken down once, hearing David's admission, she couldn't suppress her emotions.
She questioned, "David, why did you do this to me?"
"Because I had no other choice." David's eyes were cold. "Ask yourself, could you ever love me? All these years, how good have I been to you? I gave everything, but I never even touched your hand! Your heart is only for Albert! Whether you lost your memory or not, you wouldn't let me touch even a finger! Do you think I wanted to use such despicable means? You forced me to!"
