Chapter 183 Please Step Aside
Albert shot David a cold look and walked off. As they passed each other, Albert leaned in and gave David a hard shove.
David grunted, clutching his shoulder, and turned to glare at Albert. But Albert didn't even look back, heading straight for the elevator at the end of the hallway.
Albert stepped into the elevator, and the smooth walls reflected his face. The face staring back at him was just like David's, but now it was dark and brooding, with sharp, fierce eyes reminding him that everything was real.
Albert's jaw tightened, and his fists clenched. He didn't want to stay here a second longer. He made his way to the outdoor parking lot, which was almost empty. As he walked to his car, he spotted a familiar vehicle. It was David's.
He didn't want to look, but David's car was still running, and the headlights were shining right into his eyes. Albert squinted and furrowed his brows, quickly realizing there was someone in the car.
Looking through the windshield, Albert's eyes met those of Yvette inside, leaving them both momentarily stunned.
Albert stopped in his tracks, and they stared at each other through the glass. The disbelief, unwillingness, and anger in Albert's eyes were almost instantly conveyed to Yvette.
Under Albert's intense gaze, Yvette instinctively held her breath. Even though they were about to divorce, meeting Albert in David's car at this time and place still made her uncomfortable.
Yvette hurriedly lowered her eyes, avoiding Albert's gaze. But this act of avoidance only made Albert's eyes grow colder. Yvette felt guilty but didn't even want to explain herself to him.
Albert's anger surged, and he stared at Yvette through the glass, striding towards her. Yvette watched Albert approach, feeling nervous but not daring to move.
Albert raised his hand and opened the car door, looking down at her from above. "Get out."
Yvette shook her head and met Albert's eyes. Their gazes locked in the air, and Yvette could even see the anger in Albert's eyes.
Yvette pursed her lips. "Do you need something?"
"Do I need something?" Albert let out a cold laugh. "Do you know where this is?"
Yvette nodded. "I know. This is the hospital where your grandfather is staying."
"Right." Albert's voice was low and cold. "Then what are you doing here?"
"Your brother is upstairs visiting your grandfather. I'm waiting for him," Yvette said calmly, looking directly at Albert.
The calmer she spoke, the tighter Albert's grip on the car door handle became. Albert furrowed his brows. "You know that's my brother. Yvette, do you dare to come upstairs with me now?"
"I'm not going," Yvette replied. "We're about to get divorced. I have no obligation to accompany you to see your family."
"But you have an obligation to accompany David to the hospital?"
"We got a call on the way. He didn't have time to drop me off first, so he came here first. It's that simple," Yvette retorted. "Is there a problem?"
Albert was about to say something when the phone on the car's center console rang. Yvette glanced over and saw that David had left his phone behind. Seeing it was a call from James, she figured David might be using James's phone to call, so she picked it up.
Sure enough. David's voice came through the phone. "Yvette, I left my phone downstairs. Can you bring it up for me?"
"Okay," Yvette replied, eager to get away from Albert. "I'll bring it up right away."
Albert watched coldly as Yvette answered the call, listening to her conversation with David. He laughed in fury. Yvette, who wouldn't go upstairs with him, was now rushing to bring David his phone.
Yvette turned off the car, grabbed the keys and phone, and got out. But Albert blocked her path, and they faced each other.
Yvette furrowed her brows. "Please step aside."
"No way," Albert said firmly, staring her down.
"What's the point of this, Albert?" Yvette asked calmly, furrowing her brows. "We're about to get divorced, and you don't even acknowledge any relationship with me, do you?"
Just one word from Albert could save Lassie, but as a son-in-law, Albert was unwilling to do it and even made things difficult for her. Yvette couldn't understand how much he must hate her.
"Yes." Albert's voice was cold. "You don't need to remind me again."
"That's for the best." Yvette tightened her grip on the phone. "Please move aside, thank you."
'Whatever,' Albert thought, letting out a cold snort. He gave Yvette a mocking glance before turning and heading towards his own car.
Once inside, Albert slammed on the gas pedal, and the car shot forward. But it wasn't long before he hit traffic. The streetlights, signs, and red brake lights ahead illuminated the night.
Albert stared ahead with a blank expression, his fingers gripping the steering wheel so tightly that they turned white. He didn't know how much strength it took to suppress his emotions.
In the dead of night, Albert lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, his mind blank. He tried to fall asleep but found it extremely difficult.
He kept doing breathing exercises and meditating, and after what felt like an eternity, he finally began to drift off. But his sleep was restless, and a sense of unease pressed down on his chest, making him feel like he was floating in mid-air.
In a half-dream, half-awake state, Albert looked down and saw Yvette beneath him. Yvette's cheeks were flushed, her eyes misty, and she looked at him seductively. She raised her slender arm to wrap around his neck, responding skillfully.
Yvette seemed to be struggling, murmuring something softly. Albert tried to listen but couldn't make out her words. Then he felt a dull ache in his lower back. He wanted to kiss her lips, but his body wouldn't obey.
As his vision shifted, Albert realized he wasn't on the bed at all. Albert stood there, watching Yvette and the man on top of her. A surge of anger coursed through him, driving him to desperately see the man's face. When he finally did, confusion washed over him. The face was his own.
At that moment, Yvette suddenly shuddered and, with a sob, said, "David."
