Chapter 296 David is Back

Thunder crashed outside, and Yvette's body shook like a leaf, tears streaming down her face just like the rain pounding against the window.

She felt like she'd been yanked out of a freezing river, her whole body shivering with fear.

Just when she thought she couldn't take it anymore, she felt something grab her legs.

Looking down, she saw two kids clinging to her, and the pain in her heart eased a little.

Thank goodness the kids she had risked everything for were safe and healthy.

Yvette reached out and touched their soft cheeks, but sleep was nowhere in sight.

Through the half-open curtains, she stared out at the rain pouring down outside the big window.

She licked her dry lips and sat there until the first light of dawn.

She hadn't slept a wink all night.

The first rays of morning sun peeked through the curtains, landing right on Yvette.

She squinted at the two kids still fast asleep when the hotel room doorbell rang.

"Hello, room service."

Yvette, exhausted from a sleepless night, frowned and checked the time; it was still early.

Dragging herself to the door, she opened it to find a female server with a breakfast cart. "Good morning, here's your breakfast."

"I didn't order breakfast," Yvette said, annoyed by the interruption.

"Jessica," a familiar male voice with a hint of laughter said. "Surprise."

Yvette looked up to see David's smiling face. He was in a suit, looking a bit worn out with some stubble, but holding a bouquet of flowers.

David was back, sooner than she expected.

Yvette's lips curled into a cold smile.

He must've rushed back because she mentioned running into Albert, trying to stop her.

She stepped aside, and the server wheeled the cart in, setting out the food.

"This is our specialty bread, very delicate. This is our seafood pasta, with fresh shrimp and clams. And here's your latte, your boyfriend said it's your favorite."

Yvette glanced at the beautifully arranged breakfast but felt no hunger. "Thanks."

The server looked at the flowers in David's hand and then at the breakfast. "Your boyfriend picked all this for you and even had the chef tweak it to your taste. He's really thoughtful."

Yvette pressed her lips together, forcing a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

David handed her the flowers, his eyes lighting up a bit. "I'm back."

Yvette met his gaze, her tired eyes cold and distant. David froze mid-motion, his attempt to hug Yvette coming to an abrupt halt.

He was about to say something when the knocking woke Lester and Christina.

Seeing David, the kids jumped out of bed and ran to him, but then they stopped short, looking at Yvette with a mix of hope and uncertainty.

Yvette's throat tightened. She knew they were scared of mistaking someone else for their dad.

But now that she remembered everything, how could she tell them this was their father?

Yvette pressed her lips together, remaining quiet, as David chimed in, "BoBo, CiCi, aren't you happy to see Daddy?"

"Yay!" Lester and Christina squealed, wrapping their arms around David's legs and jumping up and down. "Daddy, we missed you a lot!"

David smiled. "Then why are you ignoring me?"

Christina grinned. "BoBo was scared of mistaking someone else for you! Uncle looks just like you, and we've mixed you up before!"

David's smile faltered. "You've seen your uncle? More than once?"

"Yeah!" Christina snuggled against David's neck. "We got confused. Mommy said we're silly; she never mixes you up!"

David's eyes flickered, and he nuzzled the kids' faces. "You two are silly, not as smart as your mommy."

Christina giggled and pushed David's face away. "Daddy, your beard is scratchy!"

Watching David's gentle smile as he held the kids, Yvette felt a sting in her eyes.

Thinking of how David had lied to her for so long, her gaze grew colder.

Meeting Yvette's eyes, David was taken aback by the intensity of her expression, one he had seldom witnessed before.

David was confused but sensed her displeasure. He put the kids down. "You two go play. I need to hug your mommy first. Look, she's mad."

As David walked towards Yvette with his arms open, she stepped back, blocking him with her own. Her body instinctively rejected his closeness, knowing his deceit.

Even David, used to being pushed away, was taken aback by Yvette's sudden coldness.

"Daddy!" Lester shouted. "CiCi and I are here, and the server is here. Mommy won't let you hug her."

David's face showed a flash of embarrassment. He hid his panic and forced a smile. "Yes, your mommy is shy."

David walked back to the kids, patting their heads, and said to the server, who was still tidying up the breakfast cart with a look of envy, "I'm not her boyfriend; I'm her husband."

He smiled and added, "This is my wife and kids."

The server's envious expression deepened, and she couldn't help but exclaim, "You're so lucky to have such a considerate husband even after marriage. That's really something!"

Yvette silently watched this harmonious scene.

Why did he explain so much to the server? What was David's real intention?
