Chapter 297 David, I'm Not Your Wife
The hotel room the company set up wasn't great, with a tiny table crammed with breakfast stuff.
David had dark circles under his eyes but didn't seem annoyed as he took Christina and Lester to wash up.
Yvette sat on the bed, listening to the chatter from the bathroom.
Lester asked, "Daddy, why are you back? Mommy said you wouldn't be back until you finished your work."
David smiled. "I missed you and Mommy, so I wrapped up early to come see you."
Christina beamed. "Daddy, we missed you too!"
After the kids were done washing up, David carried them out, one on each arm.
Seeing Yvette's unhappy face, Lester climbed down from David. "Daddy, you can't carry us. Mommy says we need to be independent and walk our own path."
Christina pouted. "But I want Daddy to carry me."
David patted her head. "Listen to Mommy, okay?"
"Okay," Christina said reluctantly as she climbed down.
David rolled up his sleeves and helped the kids with breakfast. "Eat up."
While they ate, Yvette said, "BoBo, CiCi, do you want to go to the playground downstairs?"
Christina nodded eagerly. "Yes! It's been so long since we played."
Yvette felt a pang of guilt. She had brought the kids back alone and spent most of her time working, leaving little time for them.
Hearing they could go play, Lester and Christina sped up their eating.
After finishing, the kids wiped their mouths and raised their hands. "Mommy, we're done!"
"Okay," Yvette nodded, picking up the phone to call the room service manager. She told the kids, "Mommy called the room service manager. Someone will take you to the playground. Now, what's the number one rule to remember?"
Lester and Christina chimed in together, "Safety first!"
Christina then looked a bit sad. "Mommy, aren't you and Daddy coming with us?"
David glanced at the kids. "Your mommy might have something to do. Daddy will take you."
"You stay," Yvette said, meeting David's slightly bloodshot eyes calmly.
Yvette's silence made David uneasy; he knew she had something to say.
Soon, Lester and Christina reluctantly left with the room service manager, leaving just Yvette and David in the room.
Yvette casually asked, "Is the work in Las Vegas finished?"
"Yeah," David nodded. "Jessica, the work I'm handling is done, but Las Vegas can't be left unattended for too long. I'll help you with your project; there shouldn't be any problems."
"Okay."
David added, "Since I'm back, I can't completely avoid seeing family. There's a family dinner coming up in a couple of days that I'll be at, and then we're heading back to Las Vegas with BoBo and CiCi. Is that okay with you?"
Yvette looked up at him. "Didn't you promise to help me remember things when you got back?"
David smiled. "Jessica, I don't know much about your family here. If you wanna head back, you gotta come with me to my place, but there ain't any memories waiting for you there."
Yvette's tone remained firm. "You sure there ain't any memories for me there?"
David was taken aback, and Yvette's gaze turned piercing.
Yvette's lips twisted into a mocking smile. "Am I really Jessica? Am I really your wife? Are BoBo and CiCi really your kids?"
She stared hard into David's eyes, her sharp words accusing him of years of deceit.
David's eyes narrowed. "What do you remember?"
Yvette replied, "Everything."
With just that one word, both Yvette and David became emotional.
David's voice trembled slightly as he tried to control his emotions. "Yvette, I'm sorry, I admit I've been lying to you, but I can explain everything."
Yvette's eyes stung, and despite clenching her teeth, tears welled up. "Why did you take me to Stellaria?"
David explained, "When you lost your memory, I was searching everywhere for a way to help you regain it. The doctors here were helpless. My doctor friend Alex told me his mentor, Lott, was a renowned expert in this field."
Yvette pursed her lips. The months David spent taking her to Lott for memory treatment weren't fake. They tried various methods, including psychological therapy, but nothing worked.
Yvette asked, "Then why did you create a fake identity, Jessica, for me?"
"Weren't you happy as Jessica?" David looked at her reddened eyes. "Even though you lost your memory, you were much happier than before. I selfishly wanted you to stay happy."
David's voice trembled slightly. "And you were pregnant back then. If the Valdemar family found out you were Yvette, they would've tried to take the kids away. By giving you a fake identity, I could protect you and the kids from any harm."
"I know you've been good to us, I know." Yvette's eyes filled with tears. "But I wanted so badly to regain my memory. Why couldn't you tell me the truth? I didn't even know who I was, living in a world full of lies. It's so pathetic! No matter how bad my past was, I at least have the right to know who I am!"
"Yvette, can you consider my feelings too?" David's eyes reddened. "At first, I just wanted to take care of you and protect you. But as Jessica, our family of four was so happy. People are selfish; I just wanted that happiness to continue."
Yvette asked, "So, you didn't want me to return to Luken because you wanted to keep hiding the truth?"
"Yes." David's Adam's apple bobbed. "Because I love you, I was afraid you'd soften towards Albert. I was afraid that despite all the harm he caused you, you'd still go back to him."
"But you're hurting me too!" Yvette's tears finally fell. "In Stellaria, I had no memory, didn't even remember my own husband, living in guilt every day, hoping to remember everything to repay your care. But now I remember, everything you said was a lie. I'm not even your wife. David, why did you do this to me?"
David clenched his fists, his eyes red. "Yvette, when Albert and I went back to the countryside, I was the one who truly loved you for over a decade. With that level of love, how could I have any hidden agendas? How could I hurt you? All I wanted was to be with you forever, is that so wrong?"
