Chapter 408 She Must Not Get Pregnant!
"My wife and children picked it out for me..." as David said this, his eyes sparkled with satisfaction.
A gentle smile hung on his face, as if the whole world was in his grasp.
Albert could sense the pride and boastfulness in David's words. His hand clenched around his phone, knuckles turning pale from the pressure. Inside, anger and pain silently accumulated, like a volcano about to erupt.
His gaze was fixed on the phone screen, staring at the face that looked exactly like his own, almost indistinguishable. Albert's eyes grew sharper.
David in the video didn't continue speaking; he changed the subject, but the smile in his eyes lingered as he talked about who gave him the tie.
Albert's fingertip pressed the lock screen button, and David's voice instantly disappeared, leaving only the black screen reflecting Albert's current expression.
His face was cold and stern, his jawline tense. His breathing was deeper and faster, carrying a suppressed and restrained anger.
The tie that Yvette didn't give him was now on David's chest!
In the morning, sunlight poured through the window, waking Yvette. She sat up, checked her phone, and saw it was already past nine. The kids should be at school by now.
Albert hadn't come by for the past few days for some reason.
Waiting for him every night subconsciously, Yvette felt a vague heaviness in her chest when he never showed up. She should have felt relieved, but she couldn't resist the urge to ask where he had gone, even though she knew she couldn't.
Just as she was about to put down her phone, Yvette suddenly froze.
She instinctively looked at the screen again and realized it was already the 23rd.
And her period hadn't come yet.
Yvette's heart sank. Despite having symptoms of an impending period, her usually punctual cycle was already several days late.
The events of the past few days had almost made Yvette forget about this.
Yvette suddenly remembered that the last time Albert threw her pills into the trash, it took her a few days to get a chance to buy more.
Could it be...
A cold sweat broke out on Yvette's back, and she almost immediately got up and left the house.
Yvette hailed a taxi by the roadside. "To the hospital."
She had considered using a test strip first, but it was still early, and she feared it might not be accurate.
Going to the hospital for a blood test was the best choice.
Watching the scenery flash by, Yvette grew more anxious. At this critical moment, she absolutely couldn't be pregnant. Her relationship with Albert was increasingly complicated, and she needed to ease the tension between them before considering having a child.
Otherwise, the arrival of a child would only entangle her further, trapping her in place, unable to move.
As they passed a shopping mall, Yvette suddenly remembered something. "Driver, pull over."
Yvette stepped out of the car, her disheveled hair blowing in the wind, mirroring her chaotic mood. Moving quietly through the crowd, she knew someone was following her. Suddenly, she slipped into a corner up ahead.
She hid among the people, scanning her surroundings with sharp eyes, trying to spot those spying on her.
Yvette knew Albert's men wouldn't be easily shaken off, so she followed the crowd into a women's clothing store.
She grabbed a few loose, ordinary clothes, a hat, and sunglasses, and went into the fitting room.
After changing, Yvette folded her long hair to look like a shoulder-length bob.
Looking in the mirror, Yvette saw a completely transformed version of herself and felt slightly relieved.
Yvette left the fitting room, swiped her card to pay, and tightly held onto the clothes she had changed out of.
She walked to the entrance, pretending to check her outfit in the mirror, but actually using the reflection to observe behind her.
Sure enough, the bodyguards following her were anxiously searching for her after losing track.
Pulling her hat brim lower and zipping her jacket up high to cover her face, Yvette exited through another door of the store and quietly left the mall. Confident she had shaken off Albert's bodyguards, she reached the street, hailed a taxi, and headed straight to the hospital.
It was probably because it was a weekday that the hospital wasn't too crowded.
This wasn't Yvette's first time checking for pregnancy, so she was already familiar with the process.
Yvette took her test slip to the blood draw area and quickly got in line.
The announcement at the blood draw area wasn't loud, but it was just enough for everyone there to hear.
"Number 132, Yvette, please go to window 4 for your blood draw."
Yvette walked to window 4. The nurse was skilled, and Yvette barely felt any pain as the blood draw was completed.
The nurse handed her a slip. "The results will be ready in about an hour. You can get them from the self-service machine nearby."
Yvette said, "Thank you."
Yvette pressed her arm where the needle had been and planned to sit nearby to wait for the results. But out of the corner of her eye, she saw a familiar figure rushing towards her.
That familiar figure made Yvette freeze.
Sylvia?
Yvette instinctively pulled her hat brim lower, pretending not to see Sylvia, and turned to leave.
The things she had experienced over the years left her too embarrassed to confront Sylvia.
Sylvia had warned her countless times, but she had stubbornly gone her own way, leading to her current predicament.
Blending into the crowd, Yvette quickly walked into an elevator. She stared at the doors as if they were a portal to another world. Just as her tense emotions began to relax, a hand suddenly forced its way between the closing doors, causing the elevator to slowly reopen.
Yvette looked up and met Sylvia's slightly red eyes.
Their gazes locked in the narrow elevator space, and the atmosphere instantly became tense.
Yvette's emotions were complex, a mix of fear, guilt, and unease. She missed Sylvia, but seeing her eyes, she feared they would see through her and uncover the "retribution" she had faced over the years.
Time seemed to stand still, each second dragging on.
Yvette's heart pounded like a drum, and she bit her lower lip, trying to control her emotions. She wanted to say something, but her throat felt blocked.
"Yvette, come out." Sylvia's angry voice, tinged with tears, reached her.
