Chapter 32 I Want a Divorce

Albert tightly furrowed his brow.

He said, "Are you angry, Yvette?"

She clenched her fists, trying hard to suppress her emotions.

Yvette denied, "No."

Albert remarked, "I have never hidden my past from you." His voice was cold and devoid of emotion.

Yes, before she slept with him, she knew he loved Violet. From the day they met at the social event, his friends said he had just broken up. She still remembered the fleeting shadow on his face.

His life had never been free from Violet.

His frankness was so despicable that it felt like a boulder pressing on Yvette's heart.

He, indeed, hadn't hidden anything. It was she who had been deluding herself.

Yvette replied defiantly, "Got it. I won't say such things again in the future."

She turned her head, looking at the treetops in the distance, and added, "I won't interfere with you, and you won't interfere with me. We... only have a legal relationship."

He looked at her, his expression unreadable. After a long while, his tone was as cold as ice.

He lightly uttered, "Fine."

Their conversation came to an abrupt end. Everything was as Yvette had expected.

She knew precisely what words could make him angry. When he was truly angry, his expression was restrained, with no emotion on his face. He would just give her a cold glance until he turned and left.

A gust of wind blew, making the roadside trees rustle in silence.

For the first time in a conversation with Albert, Yvette had the upper hand, but she wasn't as happy as she had imagined.

She walked back to the porch, exhausted. Wyatt was still waiting there.

"Let's go back," Yvette said.

Wyatt looked up, seeing Yvette visibly downcast, her expression dim and lifeless. He seemed to understand something.

Before Wyatt could speak, Yvette said first, "Don't ask me any questions, okay?"

They walked one after the other. There was no one else in the corridor; they could only hear their footsteps.

"Isn't this exhausting?" he couldn't help but ask.

A few words made the usually strong Yvette unable to hold back her tears. She choked, suppressing her emotions.

Yvette replied aloofly, "We still have some training this afternoon. You should get some rest, too."

Wyatt gave her a meaningful look, indifferent to her aloofness. He gazed at her lightly.

He said, "You shouldn't stay here for a man who doesn't love you. Go back to the hospital. You belong in the operating room."

Yvette paused. Moments later, she looked at her toes in confusion, taking a while to respond.

She responded, "Maybe."

Yvette's recent job was training. The only benefit was that she didn't have to be on call anymore.

After being on call, she got a day and night's rest. Otherwise, she had to commute daily, which wasn't much better.

After work, Yvette waited in the office for Sylvia to come over. She sat in the chair, playing with her phone.

The short videos were repetitive and dull, and Yvette did not smile even once.

The door was pushed open.

Yvette thought it was Sylvia and immediately turned off her phone.

"You're finally here. Could you be any slower? I..." Yvette looked up and realized it wasn't Sylvia but Violet.

For a moment, the atmosphere in the room became eerily silent. The air seemed to freeze, making it feel stifling.

Yvette calmly pulled out a chair, and offered, "Sit down."

She put down her phone and bag.

Yvette asked, "Are you here for a check-up?"

Violet replied, "I'm here to see you."

"Well." Yvette was mentally prepared. She sat back down, and asked, "What can I do for you?"

Violet clenched her hands into fists, resting them flat on her thighs. She apologized, "I'm sorry I didn't tell Albert you were also there that day."

She looked up at Yvette with a clear gaze, and asked, "Is everything all right with you?"

Yvette replied indifferently, "It's okay."

After all, he wouldn't choose her, and whether she told him or not would only make her seem more pathetic. Yvette still did not lift her head.

Violet persisted, "Can you think about what we talked about that day?"

Yvette tensed up, mulling over it.

'Give Albert back to Violet?

'Albert was never hers.

'Abortion?'

Yvette hesitated as she touched her still flat abdomen, responding firmly, "I'm sorry, I can't agree to that."

Even if Albert didn't love her, she wanted this child.

When Sylvia arrived, Violet happened to be leaving.

They brushed past each other.

Upon seeing Violet leaving, Sylvia rushed in immediately.

"What's going on? Why is she here again?" Sylvia asked as she ran up to Yvette with a worried expression, checking her over from head to toe. "Are you okay? Did she do anything to you?"

Touched by Sylvia's excessive concern, Yvette quickly took hold of her shoulders. She assured Sylvia, "I'm fine; she just came to get some medication."

"Really?" Sylvia sounded somewhat skeptical.

Yvette reassured, "Really."

Sylvia then breathed a sigh of relief.

Sylvia advised, "You're just unlucky to have to interact with her at work. Be careful in the future. If you need to prescribe something for her, let me handle it. That way, she won't cause you trouble or complain to Albert later."

Yvette chuckled, and said, "There's no one that malicious, come on."

Sylvia cautioned, "They write about people like that in novels and TV shows; you should still be cautious."

"All right," Yvette agreed, grabbed her bag, and left the medical center with Sylvia.

They stood at the crosswalk. The little man on the red light stood still, blinking as if the voltage was unstable.

Sylvia continued to chatter on, but Yvette wasn't paying attention. She looked up and asked, "Sylvia, do you think I would be able to support a child on my own with my income?"

The sudden question took Sylvia by surprise. She turned to face Yvette. "Why are you asking this all of a sudden? Did Violet say something to you?"

"No," Yvette replied calmly. "I just suddenly felt that being a single mother might not be bad."

Sylvia frowned and scolded, "Are you out of your mind? It sounds simple to say you'll be a single mom, but in reality, it's not that easy. The company maternity leave is just over a hundred days. Who will take care of your child after that?

"Will you have that mother you dislike look after your child? How much would it cost you to hire a nanny? It's a big challenge to look after your child from one to three years old.

"If you don't want to be with Albert, then don't bring this child into the world. Don't create problems for yourself."

"You're right." Yvette's face briefly showed reluctance. She spoke slowly, with a hint of self-mockery. "I indeed have no right to have a child."

Sylvia gazed at Yvette with a serious expression. "What's going on between you and Albert?" she asked.

Yvette snapped back to the present, looked at Sylvia, and spoke softly, "Sylvia, I want a divorce."
