Chapter 140 David's Hug

Yvette had a lot to say, but it felt like her throat was being squeezed shut.

'He accused me of getting an abortion for money,' she thought.

Yvette blinked, trying to keep her emotions in check.

"Albert, I told you before, it's my body, my choice," she said coldly. "Why I don't want this child is none of your business."

Albert, holding back, asked, "Yvette, if you needed money, why didn't you just ask me?"

"I don't want your money," she replied, stepping back defensively. "I want to leave you."

She grabbed her bag and headed for the door.

Albert blocked her path, towering over her.

Yvette met his gaze defiantly. "Move."

She had just had surgery a week ago, and her face was now gaunt.

Albert felt a lump in his throat. He stepped back.

Yvette seized the moment and ran out.

Albert slumped, looking defeated and sad.

He clutched the desk, trying to steady himself, when a tall man burst in.

Albert looked up and saw David's angry eyes.

David grabbed Albert by the collar. "How could you say that to Yvette?"

Albert's eyes turned cold. "What does this have to do with you?"

"You have no idea what Yvette's been through," David shot back.

"Of course not," Albert said hoarsely. "You hid her away. Did you sign the surgery papers for her? Whose name did you use?"

David's eyes flickered but he stood firm. "Yvette doesn't want to see you. I took her away, but that doesn't excuse your words."

Albert leaned against the desk, a mix of anger and helplessness. "I just made a reasonable guess. Is that hurtful?"

He laughed coldly. "Besides, Yvette admitted it herself."

David couldn't hold back. He punched Albert hard in the face.

David's punch landed squarely on Albert's face, the sound echoing in the room.

Albert hadn't seen it coming. The pain snapped him out of his daze, and anger flared up. He raised his hand to hit back.

David pressed down on Albert's shoulder, shouting, "Albert, Yvette had a miscarriage because of a stillbirth. She's more heartbroken than anyone!"

Albert's fist froze mid-air, and his anger evaporated.

He stared at David, finally asking, "What did you say?"

Albert dropped his hand, holding his head in frustration.

David left, and Albert was alone, replaying David's words: "Yvette had a miscarriage because of a stillbirth. She's more heartbroken than anyone."

Those words hurt more than the punch.

Albert cursed himself, 'How could I accuse Yvette of wanting money without knowing the truth?'

His jaw tightened, eyes filled with despair.

His phone rang, and he fumbled, accidentally hanging up. Seeing it was Victor, he felt relieved.

'At least it wasn't Yvette,' he thought.

Victor called again. Albert answered, his voice hoarse, "What do you want?"

"Albert, why aren't you at the training center? There's a work review today. Did you forget?" Victor asked, puzzled.

"I have something to do," Albert replied.

"Why do you always have something to do?" Victor said, anxious and reproachful. "The leaders are inspecting today. This review is crucial for your evaluation. You have to be here!"

"I know," Albert said.

"What's so important?" Victor reminded him. "You already made the leaders mad by not submitting your report last time. If you don't show up now, are you crazy?"

"I'm not crazy," Albert said firmly. "I need to find Yvette."

Albert searched the Medical Evaluation Center but couldn't find her.

He checked the time; it wasn't long after work hours, so she shouldn't have gone far.

Heading to the parking lot, he saw two familiar figures on a bench along the tree-lined path.

'It's Yvette and David,' he thought.

They sat close, Yvette's head down, her expression unclear. David was turned towards her, quietly watching.

The scene was peaceful yet jarring.

Albert moved to intervene, but David suddenly acted.

David turned and pulled Yvette into his embrace.
