Chapter 146 Disappointment
Yvette's cold, determined response finally shattered Albert's calm.
Albert felt like a fool, criticizing her for chasing money while trying to use it to keep her from leaving.
But right now, he wished she did love money.
Albert swallowed hard, fists clenched, veins bulging, trying to keep his anger in check.
In a deep voice, he said, "If we don't get divorced, you don't have to pay back the money."
His tone was stiff and awkward.
Yvette glanced at him, a mocking smile on her lips. "I gave up the child to get a divorce, and you think I want your money? Don't worry, I'll pay you back as soon as I get the money from the Valdemar family."
She turned and left the office without another look.
Albert heard the sarcasm in her voice. His jaw tightened, and he raised his hand to stop her but then dropped it.
He started to chase after her, but Steve blocked his way as soon as he stepped out.
"Mr. Valdemar, it's time to fly. Shall we go?" Steve asked.
Albert frowned and checked his watch. It was indeed time to leave.
He looked at Yvette's retreating figure, feeling heavy. "I know."
After a long flight, even Albert felt tired. His heavy thoughts drained him even more.
Dragging his suitcase, he rubbed the back of his neck.
He saw a child sitting alone on a suitcase, sliding it along the ground. The suitcase suddenly shot forward.
The child was young, just able to touch the ground with his toes. Albert, with his pilot's instincts, sensed danger. But the child found it fun and slid faster, while the distant parents were oblivious.
Steve followed Albert's gaze and laughed, "Mr. Valdemar, are you getting more fond of kids? Thinking about what your child with Dr. Orlando will be like?"
Albert's face darkened, feeling a pang in his heart.
Things could go wrong quickly with kids. The boy on the suitcase gave it a big shove, and it shot forward. But the force was too much, and the suitcase lost balance.
Seeing the child about to fall, Albert rushed over and lifted him.
The suitcase crashed to the ground with a loud noise, drawing everyone's attention.
The child, held by Albert, started crying after a moment of fear.
The startled parents rushed over to check on him.
Albert set the child down and told the parents, "Please watch your child to avoid any danger."
The father nodded in relief. "Thank you!"
Albert nodded back. "You're welcome."
As they were about to leave, Steve, still impressed, said, "Wow, that was fast, Mr. Valdemar. I hadn't even reacted before you rushed over. That suitcase is tall; it could have been really bad if he hit his head."
Steve noticed Albert awkwardly rotating his right wrist.
"Mr. Valdemar, what happened to your hand?" Steve asked, startled.
"I'm fine," Albert replied, still rotating his wrist. "I might have twisted it when I grabbed the child."
Steve didn't think much of it, but as they left the airport, he noticed Albert's wrist was swelling. "Mr. Valdemar, your wrist is swollen. Should we get it checked?"
Steve pulled out his phone. "I'll call the Medical Evaluation Center and make an appointment for you."
Albert pursed his lips but didn't refuse.
After the call, Steve teased, "You didn't say 'no.' Looks like Dr. Orlando and the Medical Evaluation Center have some pull with you."
Albert shot him a cold glance. "She's resting recently."
"So what?" Steve grinned. "I bet if you get hurt and go to the Medical Evaluation Center, her colleagues will inform her."
Albert stayed silent, his face cold.
At the Medical Evaluation Center, Sylvia was on duty. Seeing Albert, she looked resentful but didn't show it too openly.
She slapped a form in front of Albert. "I've scheduled your appointment. Come here after your check-up."
Sylvia's face was cold, not even looking at him directly.
Albert nodded. "Okay."
Seeing Sylvia's unkind demeanor, Steve curiously asked Albert, "What's wrong with Dr. Symons today? Is it her time of the month? I've never seen her this grumpy."
"Don't worry, she's not mad at you," Albert said, pursing his lips. "She's mad at me."
Sylvia knew Yvette had disappeared for a week to get an abortion and had comforted him. But her attitude today was probably because Yvette had told her about his hurtful words.
Steve sighed regretfully. "Then Dr. Symons probably won't tell Dr. Orlando about your injury. Do you want to call her yourself?"
Albert shot Steve a cold look. "No need. It's just a soft tissue injury."
Steve shrugged. "Suit yourself. It's your wife; you decide."
Albert checked the time. "It's late. You should go. I can handle this."
Steve nodded. "Alright."
Albert sat on a chair outside the office, thinking about Steve's words, feeling a bit moved.
'With Sylvia's indifferent attitude, she definitely wouldn't tell Yvette about my injury.' After some thought, Albert took out his phone.
Hearing the waiting tone on the other end, Albert's heart unexpectedly beat faster.
Soon, Yvette's cool voice came through. "What do you want?"
Albert swallowed hard, his voice still calm. "I'm at the Medical Evaluation Center."
Yvette asked, "What's wrong with you?"
Albert's straight lips revealed a hint of tension. "I'm injured."
Yvette paused for two seconds. "I see."
After the check-up, it was indeed just a soft tissue injury, which would heal in a few days and wouldn't disturb his work much.
But Albert still felt a bit down; Yvette didn't come.
Feeling lost, Albert was about to leave when he heard a light voice behind him.
"Albert."
He turned around and met Violet's worried gaze.
Violet, panting, ran up to him. "Yvette said you were hurt. Are you okay?"
