Chapter 185 Dispute
In the dark, only Yvette's phone screen lit up the room. The cold white light hit Yvette's face, making her look even paler. Her fingers shook a bit as she slowly typed: [Okay.]
Yvette put her phone down and closed her eyes, trying to sleep, but her mind was racing. No more messages came, so she eventually drifted off in that state.
She had a rough night and woke up early. When she got to the hospital, Hubert had just finished checking on Lassie. Yvette walked up to him. "Dr. Diaz, how's my mom today?"
Hubert said, "She's doing well. Dr. Martinez did a great job with the surgery, and your mom's recovering nicely. Don't worry, she should wake up soon."
"That's good." Yvette felt a bit of relief and looked at Hubert gratefully. "Thank you."
"If she wakes up today, she should be out of the ICU in about a week, which will ease your family's burden a bit."
A nearby nurse chimed in with a smile, "Dr. Diaz, they got Dr. Martinez for the surgery, so a few days in the ICU shouldn't be a problem for them."
Yvette's smile faded a bit, and she just nodded politely.
Hubert said, "We'll let you know if anything changes. No need to stay here all the time; you can't see her anyway."
Yvette nodded. "Okay." Watching Hubert and the nurse walk away, Yvette sat on a chair outside the ICU and let out a long breath.
Over the years, because of Wayne's illness, Yvette had hardly saved any money. After getting married, Lassie had been quiet for a while, and she had managed to save a little.
This time, with Lassie's illness and such a complex surgery, Yvette had spent all her money again. Even the tuition and living expenses she had set aside for herself were almost gone.
Yvette felt a bit lost but knew she had to keep going. Her phone suddenly rang; it was Sylvia.
Yvette answered, sounding a bit tired. "Sylvia."
Sylvia asked, "How's your mom doing?"
Yvette replied, "The surgery was very successful, and she's recovering well."
Yvette's voice was weak, even weaker than it had been yesterday. Sylvia was puzzled, questioning, "Then why do you sound like this? Did something happen?"
It was almost as if Sylvia's question made Yvette realize why she was feeling so down. She pressed her lips together and tried to speak calmly, "Albert reminded me that once the divorce cooling-off period is over, we should go to the family court."
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before Sylvia spoke, "That doesn't make sense! From what he told me before, I could totally tell he cares about you."
Yvette forced a smile, saying, "Anyway, that's the outcome."
Sylvia cautiously asked, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. I was the one who brought it up in the first place," Yvette said, pretending to be nonchalant. "It's just that with the divorce and my mom's situation, it's a bit overwhelming. I'll be fine once I get through it."
Sylvia asked, "Does your mom need someone to stay with her?"
"No, she's in the ICU, so we can't see her for now."
Sylvia said, "I'll come pick you up later."
Yvette was puzzled, asking, "Where are we going?"
Sylvia replied, "To help you relax!"
Sitting in Sylvia's car, Yvette still looked pretty rough. Sylvia glanced over. "Did you even sleep last night? Your eye bags are terrible."
"I slept, but not well," Yvette said, rubbing her temples. "My mom's surgery just ended last night, and I was really worried, so I didn't sleep much."
"Really?" Sylvia gave her a skeptical look.
Yvette didn't respond, but her expression was a bit off. Seeing that Yvette didn't want to talk about it, Sylvia let it go and drove off.
First, Sylvia took Yvette to a popular restaurant. After eating, seeing that Yvette was still down, she turned the car around and took her to a bar.
When they got out of the car, Yvette was kind of at a loss for words. "Sylvia, why a bar? I can't drink. If something happens at the hospital, I won't be able to respond in time."
"I didn't bring you here just for the drinks," Sylvia said, pulling Yvette inside. "I want you to soak in the happy atmosphere and catch some of the joy. We can sit here and watch people dance and play games; it's fun."
Sylvia smiled. "Remember this bar? The snacks here are awesome!"
Yvette was helpless but persuaded by Sylvia's words. She wasn't happy, so coming here to soak up the good vibes might be a good choice.
The two of them went inside and found a booth near the dance floor. Sylvia ordered a bunch of snacks and drinks, but no alcohol. Yvette ate the snacks Sylvia had praised and looked at her with gratitude.
Sylvia said with a smile, "Alright, don't look at me like that. You're still Albert's wife; you can't fall in love with me."
Yvette smiled and blinked at her. "Will you wait for me? I'm getting divorced soon!"
Yvette's words left Sylvia momentarily stunned. Seeing Sylvia's dazed expression, Yvette couldn't help but laugh. The two of them laughed together, and Yvette finally felt a huge relief from her stress.
As she drank her beverage, Yvette thought to herself that the world would be unbearable without good friends.
Halfway through, Sylvia got up to go to the restroom. Yvette sat in the booth, replying to messages from family members asking about Lassie's condition. Just as she was about to put down her phone, she heard a commotion behind her.
Disputes in bars were common, and Yvette didn't plan to pay attention, but she accidentally heard Sylvia's voice. Yvette turned around and saw that Sylvia was arguing with Sissy.
Sissy was surrounded by several women, looking aggressive. Yvette frowned, quickly grabbed her phone, and ran over, pulling Sylvia out of the crowd and standing in front of her.
Yvette looked warily at Sissy, asking, "What's going on?"
Sissy looked Yvette up and down impatiently. "What's it to you?"
Yvette frowned and turned to ask Sylvia. "What's the situation, Sylvia?"
Sylvia was furious, glaring at Sissy. "I can't believe there are still people like you who cut in line for the restroom and then come out to mock others."
Yvette found it a bit absurd. Sylvia wasn't the type to argue over such trivial matters. "What did she say?"
Sylvia frowned and glared at Sissy without speaking.
Sissy laughed, crossed her arms, and looked at Yvette arrogantly. "She might be too embarrassed to say it, so I'll repeat it."
Sissy sneered at Yvette, "I said, 'Sylvia, you cut in line for the restroom, and your friend steals men. You two are a perfect pair of shameless friends'."
