Chapter 320 Because I Love You

Yvette's words hit Albert like a ton of bricks, reminding him of all the dumb stuff he said back then. Regret gnawed at his heart.

If their kid had been born, maybe Yvette wouldn't be so cold towards him. Maybe, just maybe, for the kid's sake, she would've given him a shot. At least they wouldn't be acting like enemies now.

Albert flashed back to that night when she wanted him so bad. They knew each other's bodies so well, that kind of connection couldn't be faked.

She cared about him, but the past was a heavy weight. She said those hurtful things to get back at him. That had to be it!

Albert wasn't ready to throw in the towel. "Don't you want to know what really happened that night? I'll tell you everything."

But Yvette cut him off, her eyes icy. "No need, I don't care anymore. Whatever happened that night doesn't change anything now."

Albert locked eyes with her. "What if we really did make love? Can David handle that? His wife slept with me, and he's cool with it?"

Yvette's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her cool. "David knows I was taken by you after accidentally taking the drug. I honestly don't remember what happened, but he said he doesn't care."

She paused, then added, "He accepts all of me, and I'm grateful. I'll repay him double. So that night doesn't matter."

Albert's emotions boiled over.

He was both pissed and hurt. "You think that night doesn't matter? You slept with me, and you can just forget it?"

"Sleeping with a man I don't love, I only feel disgusted. I don't want to remember."

Disgusted? She called him disgusting? Albert's fists clenched.

"I'll say it again, I am Jessica, David's wife," Yvette said. "And I will be, forever."

Albert's jaw tightened, his eyes defiant. "You'll always be Yvette, my woman!"

"Go ahead and be crazy." Yvette was done arguing. "David and I are staying in Luken to spend more time with Grandma. It has nothing to do with you."

"Yvette." Albert's voice shook. "If I refuse to let go, what will you do?"

"I am David's wife, that's a fact that won't change," Yvette said coldly.

She moved to leave the conference room, but Albert's eyes narrowed. He grabbed her, knowing if he let her go now, he'd never get another chance to explain.

"Yvette," Albert called out.

Yvette recoiled at his touch, shaking off his hand instinctively. "Let go!"

But Albert's grip was firm, her wrist trapped no matter how hard she tried to shake it off.

Yvette's chest heaved with anger, her voice rising. "Mr. Valdemar, if someone sees you grabbing me, it'll cause a huge scandal. Aren't you afraid?"

"Yvette." Albert's voice was raw. "Are you going to treat me as an enemy forever?"Albert's demeanor softened, afraid Yvette might really walk out of his life for good.

"Of course not," Yvette scoffed. "And don't forget, I'm still your brother David's wife."

Pain flickered in Albert's eyes. "Do you really hate me that much?"

"With you constantly bothering me, how could I not?" Yvette shot back.

"You might be able to pretend nothing happened, but you can't force others to forget," she said, her voice low.

"The past was my fault. I'm sorry," Albert admitted.

Yvette frowned. "There is no past between us."

"Yvette," Albert pressed on, "after the kidnapping, everything between Violet and me ended."

Yvette was momentarily taken aback but quickly regained her composure. "That has nothing to do with me. I don't care."

Even if he broke things off with Violet later, it didn't change the fact that he chose to save Violet over her. She didn't want to hear Violet's name, didn't want to remember the past, and definitely didn't want to see Albert.

She tried to pull her hand away, but Albert's grip only tightened.

"You're hurting me!" Yvette's voice was filled with anger. "Let go, Albert!"

"I won't let go," Albert said, loosening his grip slightly but still holding on. "I know you'll just run away again."

Albert looked deep into her eyes. "Yvette, why can't you come back to me?"

Yvette sneered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Why do you think you can always get what you want?"

She would never forgive him for what he had done, nor would she ever give in to his demands.

Her gaze cut Albert deeply.

He had made so many mistakes, and each one was etched in Yvette's heart.

Even if he realized his errors and tried to make amends, it was too late to warm her heart.

What should he do?

Let go?

No! He couldn't do it!

Albert's eyes reddened. Despite the harsh light of the conference room, he said, "I just want a chance. If you come back to me, I'll give you the best of everything and respect all your wishes. And those two kids, I'll treat them like they were ours."

Yvette's back stiffened, and she snapped, "Shut up! Don't say another word. Disgusting! Albert, stop fooling yourself. I will never go back to you."

How could Albert act all noble and talk about treating the kids as his own when they were his—the ones he didn't want?

Yvette was on the verge of breaking down. She shook off Albert's hand. Just as he was about to speak, an uninvited guest stepped between them. Albert looked up and saw two identical faces.

David stood protectively in front of Yvette and said calmly, "Albert, your constant harassment of my wife is neither reasonable nor decent. Why do you have to make things so ugly?"

Albert's eyes never left Yvette. He looked at her intently and said, "Because I love you."
