Chapter 607 They Four Are Assigned to a Group

Albert held Yvette close as they attempted to leave the gala, when suddenly the entire venue dimmed.

As the lights gradually faded, a mysterious atmosphere enveloped the space. The once-lively crowd fell silent, all attention drawn to the central dance floor where soft blue lights slowly illuminated the expectant faces of the guests.

A melodious tune began to play, its rhythm both gentle and seductive. The air was perfumed with subtle fragrances mingling with the electric atmosphere. The music ebbed and flowed with the dancers' movements—sometimes quickening, sometimes slowing—like waves crashing against a shore under the night sky.

Yvette turned to Albert, her eyes questioning. "Should we still leave?" she asked, her voice barely audible above the music.

In the darkness, Albert caught Yvette's worried expression. "Do you want to?" he replied, studying her face.

Yvette bit her lip, saying nothing. She wanted to leave, but Albert had made a rare appearance at the gala. Leaving now would defeat the purpose of coming—it would all have been for nothing. She couldn't bear to be the reason for more criticism directed at him.

"Since we're here, we might as well see it through," she finally whispered.

Albert's intense gaze never left her face, noting the fatigue and anxiety in her eyes. "Are you sure you're up for it?"

Yvette nodded. "I'll be fine."

Albert's eyes darkened with concern, his brow furrowed as he continued watching her. His hand clenched into a fist before relaxing again, betraying his hesitation.

Around them, the elegant venue sparkled with light, reflecting the joyful faces of the attendees. Laughter, conversation, and music intertwined like a complex symphony.

"If you feel uncomfortable or want to leave at any point, promise you'll tell me," Albert said, his voice low and serious.

"I promise," she replied.

The glamour and excitement of the gala seemed to linger in the air, but the guests had now changed into comfortable casual wear, preparing to engage in a rather different kind of "labor."

Every year, following the Valdemar Group's charity gala, a promotional event was held to raise funds and increase public awareness of the Group's charitable endeavors. This year, they had organized a community service activity.

Albert had changed into casual attire, looking handsome and approachable. Yvette wore a knit dress with a hem that danced in the breeze, her long hair slightly tousled by the wind, adding to her natural charm.

Numerous media representatives circulated through the crowd, cameras at the ready.

After explaining the format of the activities, the host smiled and announced, "Since we have so many participants today, we'll be working in teams of four to six people for our community service projects."

The host then instructed everyone to check their number tags.

Yvette suddenly remembered that when she and Albert had arrived, they had been given numbered tags as a couple.

"So that's what these were for," Yvette said with dawning realization.

"Indeed," Albert murmured, leaning close to her ear. "Don't worry—if we get assigned anything too strenuous, I'll handle it for you."

Yvette raised an eyebrow, her tone playful. "And if it's not strenuous, Albert? Will I be on my own then?"

Albert paused, momentarily taken aback. The tension between them dissolved as he let out a soft laugh. "No, I'll do those for you too."

As they were speaking, the host's voice boomed through the speakers: "Numbers 236 and 477! Looks like we have two couples here!"

All eyes scanned the room as cameras sought out the couples with these numbers.

When the big screen revealed the matched pairs, a collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

By some cosmic coincidence, the teams consisted of Albert and Yvette paired with David and Violet!

The four of them immediately tensed, their expressions darkening simultaneously.

The host, sensing the awkwardness, attempted to explain the selection process, but the crowd was too busy whispering among themselves.

"Talk about dramatic! These four together—what a mess!"

"How uncomfortable! The four of them thrown together again—this is going to be chaos!"

"If I were a reporter, I'd focus exclusively on them. This is gold—enough material for a whole series!"

The journalists, already sensing a story, positioned themselves strategically, cameras poised and ready.

Curiosity hung heavy in the air.

None of the four seemed pleased with the arrangement.

But this was a charity event—hardly the place to pull strings for personal comfort.

Albert and Yvette, being closer to their assigned station, arrived first.

Albert's face was stormy, while Yvette looked uncomfortable. "Let's just focus on our task," she said, trying to soothe him. "It'll be fine."

Albert, despite his displeasure, nodded reluctantly.

As Violet approached with her arm linked through David's, Albert's expression grew even darker.

"What a coincidence," Violet remarked as they reached Albert and Yvette, her eyebrow arched meaningfully. "Even a random computer selection managed to put the four of us together."

Albert gave her a contemptuous glance but remained silent, clearly deeming her unworthy of a response.

Violet seemed unperturbed and was about to speak again when David subtly removed her hand from his arm.

"We represent the Valdemar Group today," he said firmly. "Since we've been assigned to work together, let's complete our task professionally and put aside any personal issues."

Yvette nodded in agreement. "We should divide the tasks and work independently. Given our... complicated situation, there's no need for unnecessary interaction."

Everyone seemed to understand the unspoken sentiment—everyone except Violet.

"That's not quite right, Yvette," she countered. "If we've been assigned tasks, we should collaborate. Besides, what's wrong with our relationship? I think we get along splendidly."

Yvette shot Violet an irritated look. "There are cameras everywhere today. I suggest you control your behavior. Otherwise, you'll have only yourself to blame for the consequences."

"You misunderstand me, Yvette," Violet explained. "I simply meant that since we all know each other's habits and capabilities so well, working together should be easier."

She turned to Albert with a pointed look. "Wouldn't you agree, Albert? That's what our flight instructor always told us."
