Chapter 107 You and Your Spouse Must Have a Great Relationship
The hospital was packed, and all Yvette could see were tired, anxious faces. Doctors and nurses rushed by, and distant cries added to the tension.
Even though Yvette was a doctor, as a family member, she couldn't shake off the panic and helplessness in her heart.
She called a colleague at the hospital for help, but it was so busy that coordination would take half an hour. This meant Wayne would have to lie on that folding bed a bit longer, and she’d still have to endure Lassie and Zora's complaints.
On the way, Yvette kept thinking about how to comfort them and how to quickly pay the fees so Wayne's treatment wouldn't be delayed.
When she got back to the emergency room, the scene she imagined didn’t happen.
"Where's the bill? I'll go pay."
In past emergencies, whenever Wayne was brought in, no matter what Yvette went to do, she’d come back to find a pile of bills on him, while Lassie and Zora just stood there crying, doing nothing.
Lassie and Zora exchanged a glance but said nothing. Yvette, a bit impatient, grabbed her phone and angrily whispered, "Where's the bill? Do you not want Wayne to get treated? Do you want him to die here?"
"No, someone took it."
"What do you mean?"
Yvette looked at the two suspiciously and noticed that Lassie was no longer crying but seemed to be hiding something. Yvette immediately sensed something was off.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her unlocked phone, with "Albert" prominently displayed at the top of the call log.
Yvette instantly got angry. "You answered my call?"
Lassie nodded, looking justified. "Why can't I answer a call from my son-in-law?"
Yvette was about to retort when she saw a tall, familiar figure out of the corner of her eye.
Albert was still in his uniform shirt, clearly just off a plane. He walked briskly, his expression calm but his actions swift, exuding a reassuring aura.
Amid the hurried medical staff and family members, Albert seemed to stand out, almost glowing, different from everyone else.
Yvette was stunned, watching him approach.
Albert stopped in front of Yvette, looking down at her.
Yvette asked, "Why are you here?"
He looked at her seriously.
"I'm your husband."
Yvette opened her mouth to speak, but the emergency doctor interrupted them with another pile of billing forms.
"Wayne's family, there are more tests to be done. Pay the fees quickly so we can proceed."
Yvette was about to reach for the slips when a hand took them from the doctor.
"My wife is pregnant. I'll handle it, thank you."
Albert's voice was deep and slightly hoarse but carried weight and steadiness, calming Yvette's anxious heart.
Albert took the payment slips with one hand and gently guided Yvette to a chair in the hallway.
"I'll go pay. You stay with your family."
With that, Albert walked away, disappearing into the crowd in the emergency department.
Yvette sat on the chair, taking a long time to calm down. The doctor came to check on Wayne, and Yvette finally felt a bit more at ease.
Albert had left, giving Yvette a chance to question Lassie. "What did you tell Albert?"
Lassie quickly explained, "He called you several times. I saw you weren't here, so I picked up. He thought I was with you for a check-up, so I told him Wayne was sick and we were at the hospital. I didn't ask him to come; he came on his own."
"Why did you tell him?"
Lassie, annoyed by Yvette's attitude, said, "He's your husband, and Wayne is his family too. He should come, and he wanted to. Was I supposed to stop him? Family needs to support each other."
Yvette felt a mix of emotions.
"It's hard to repay too many favors."
"Family doesn't count favors. Besides, if he hadn't come, you'd be the one running around now."
Yvette raised her voice, "You know I'm always the one helping when he gets sick!"
Seeing Yvette genuinely angry, Lassie didn't dare say more. As long as Wayne could get treated, that was enough.
"Okay, I won't say anything next time. Don't be mad." Lassie muttered, "Why are you so proud? Couples are supposed to support each other. Otherwise, why get married?"
Maybe it was the intense emotions, but Yvette felt a tugging pain in her stomach. She took a deep breath, knowing she couldn't afford to be angry.
The doctor administered medication to Wayne, and he gradually regained consciousness, bringing relief to the family.
Yvette's colleague arranged a bed for Wayne, and Albert helped move him to the folding bed, finally settling him down.
Albert went out for something. At that moment, a middle-aged woman from the next bed approached, "Hi, I see you have an extra chair. Can I borrow it for a bit? I'll return it when you need it."
"Sure."
"Thank you."
The chair was moved, and they settled down.
When you're in the hospital, time drags on. The woman, seeing Yvette was approachable, started chatting. "That tall, handsome guy, is he your husband?"
Yvette felt a bit awkward but nodded.
"He's quite handsome, and you two make a great couple." The person said, "At first, I thought he was the patient's brother, but he is your husband. You're very lucky."
Yvette forced a polite smile, not knowing how to respond.
"He took care of everything, from cleaning up the patient's vomit to paying the fees and getting the chair. You two must have a great relationship. He seems to really care for you."
"Really?" Yvette felt a mix of emotions.
After a while, Lassie and Zora fell asleep by the bed.
Yvette was about to get up to find the doctor when Albert returned.
Remembering the neighbor's words, Yvette felt a bit awkward.
She stood up, trying to act calm, and clenched her fingers.
"Thank you for today." Her gratitude was stiff. "How much did you spend? I'll pay you back."
Albert looked down at Yvette, her beautiful eyes dim with unreadable emotions.
He didn't answer her but said, "Don't overthink. Your task now is to get some sleep."
Yvette waved her hand. "No need."
Albert's expression turned serious, his gaze deepening. After a moment, he said firmly, "If you won't rest for yourself, do it for the baby."
