Chapter 149 He Has Feelings for You
After the holiday, Yvette got back to work at the Medical Evaluation Center, doing her job diligently.
During lunch, Yvette was watching an online course when there was a knock on the office door.
Sylvia peeked in. "Yvette, are you busy?"
"No, come in." Yvette quickly closed her computer and put her notebook aside, not wanting Sylvia to see what she was studying.
Sylvia came over and placed a hot drink in front of Yvette. "Coffee, just for you."
"Thanks." Yvette smiled. "Need something?"
"Just wanted to chat." Sylvia dragged a chair over and sat next to Yvette, clearly curious. "What are your plans after this? Are you really going back to being a surgeon after you resign?"
Yvette hesitated and didn't reply.
Sylvia continued, "What about Albert? He probably doesn't want you to be a surgeon, right?"
"I don't know," Yvette said indifferently. "We're preparing for a divorce. It doesn't matter what he wants; it's up to me."
Sylvia was shocked. "Are you really getting a divorce? I thought Albert had feelings for you and wouldn't agree to it."
"Yes, we've already been to City Hall and got the divorce cooling-off period certificate," Yvette said calmly, ignoring the topic of Albert's feelings.
Sylvia pressed on, "I think he really cares about you. Why not give him another chance? You've liked him for ages, and now that he's showing feelings, why end it?"
"Stop it," Yvette said, raising her hand. "It's not about feelings. If we can't be together, it's better to end it. Avoiding mutual torment is the best way."
Sylvia sighed. "But I heard from people at the airport that during the week you disappeared for surgery, he was a mess, didn't schedule any flights, and kept getting scolded by his superiors. After you lost the baby, he got even worse."
"Sylvia," Yvette said, lowering her eyes, "He just needed that child."
Yvette thought, 'But Albert probably doesn't realize that his grandfather didn't care for a child whose mother is me. Even if I do give birth to Albert's child, it would be of no use in his fight for the inheritance.'
"That can't be the reason!" Sylvia insisted. "When you said you wanted to abort the baby and divorce, he even asked me if you were doing it just to leave him. His main concern was you leaving him!"
Yvette blinked and stayed silent.
Sylvia continued, "He's such a proud person. Saying that must mean he's afraid of you leaving him!"
Yvette exhaled slowly. "Our divorce is settled. You don't need to persuade me anymore."
Sylvia swallowed her words.
Yvette smiled. "Alright, go enjoy your lunch break. You always complain when you can't nap, but for gossip, you gave up your precious nap."
Sylvia pouted. "I'm just worried about you. I don't want you to be sad."
"I know," Yvette said, comforting her. "I'm really fine, trust me, okay?"
In the afternoon, after work, Yvette got a call from Wyatt, inviting her to dinner.
Yvette checked her schedule and decided to accept Wyatt's dinner invitation. She owed him a favor from last time, even though she didn't end up needing his help.
She picked a riverside restaurant with a great view of the bridge. Wyatt, sitting across from her, raised an eyebrow playfully. "Yvette, you picked such a romantic spot. Got something on your mind?"
Yvette pointed to the food. "Can't you just eat quietly?"
"It's not often we hang out. How can we just focus on eating?" Wyatt's eyes showed genuine concern. "How you feeling? You don't look great."
"I'm trying to recover, but I'm still a bit weak," Yvette shrugged. "I've taken too much time off, and even though I'm about to resign, I feel a bit guilty."
Wyatt nodded. "You need more rest. This isn't a small matter; it's important for your future."
Then he smiled. "But last time you didn't let me help. Did someone else step in? Aren't you afraid I'll be jealous?"
Yvette smiled. "Yes, I found someone else."
Seeing Yvette not continuing the conversation, Wyatt pulled out a piece of paper from his bag and handed it to her. "Our team is hiring a surgeon. Why don't you join me? Center Hospital might be better for surgery, but you know the overtime there. If the senior doctors pile on tasks, you won't manage. With me, I can shield you a bit. What do you think?"
Yvette looked at the application form from the Civil Aviation General Hospital and said softly, "I'll take it and think about it."
Back home, Yvette felt a bit of soreness in her waist, making her frown. She intended to go straight to her room to rest, take a shower, and sleep early, but Lassie heard her come in and walked out.
"Why are you back so late again?" Lassie asked, a bit annoyed.
Yvette replied, "I had dinner with an old colleague and chatted a bit, so it got late."
Lassie pointed to the fridge. "I made a lot of dishes, all fresh and nutritious ingredients brought by Albert, good for your recovery. Eating random stuff outside is bad for your health."
Yvette felt a bit guilty. "Next time, if I don't come home for dinner, I'll let you know in advance so you don't make so much."
"It's not about letting me know in advance. You shouldn't be eating out so often," Lassie said seriously. "You should get well soon, and once you're better, you can try for another baby to strengthen your marriage."
Yvette was stunned. "You want me to get better just so I can have another baby?"
Lassie nodded. "Of course! Without a child, your marriage won't be stable. In about three months, you should be well enough. Timing is key. Don't worry."
Yvette's eyes darkened. She looked at Lassie coldly. "After twenty days of the divorce cooling-off period, Albert and I will officially get the divorce certificate. There won't be another child."
