Chapter 215 Are You Back with the Valdemar Family?
Albert stormed out, slamming the door behind him. Yvette had expected this, but it still stung to hear it out loud. She sank into a chair, feeling the weight of it all. This mess was her own doing, and she had to deal with it.
Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Lassie on Facebook. [Yvette, if you don't pick up, I'm calling the cops to report you missing!]
Lassie had been blowing up her phone, and it was full of missed calls. Yvette knew Lassie wasn't really worried about her safety. She was just scared Yvette would leave the Valdemar family and vanish from Luken, ruining all of Lassie's plans.
Lassie knew Yvette too well. If it weren't for the deal with James, Yvette would have done just that. With a heavy sigh, Yvette finally answered. "Cut it out, Mom."
Her voice was tired and cold, but Lassie didn't care and kept ranting, "Yvette, are you scared the cops will come looking for you? I've called a million times—if you're not dead, why didn't you answer?"
"Because I knew you'd react like this." Yvette closed her eyes, rubbing her forehead. "I'm not dead, but I don't want to talk to you."
Lassie wouldn't back down. "Where are you? Why didn't you call me? Did you fight with the Valdemar family and Albert? You ignore my calls, and now even Albert isn’t responding. Are you trying to drive me crazy?"
"I'm at the Valdemar Villa." Yvette's voice was empty. "Didn't I tell you? Your problems aren't mine anymore."
Hearing she was at the Valdemar Villa, Lassie calmed down. "Have you come to your senses?"
"It's none of your business," Yvette snapped. "I answered just to tell you to stop calling. Even if I'm here, I'm not giving you any more money. If you want to call the cops, go ahead. From now on, we'll talk through them."
Yvette hung up, not wanting to hear another word. The silence was a relief. She took a deep breath, turned off the lights, and went to bed. Her body was exhausted, but sleep wouldn't come. Staring at the dark ceiling, she whispered, "I'll consider all this as paying back Albert's debt."Morning light peeked through the curtains, filling the room. Yvette opened her eyes, feeling groggy from a night of nightmares. After washing up, a servant knocked on her door, calling her down for breakfast.
Yvette headed downstairs and noticed the usually empty dining table was packed, everyone there to keep Cheryl company for breakfast.
She scanned the room, not in the mood for small talk, and turned to head to the kitchen for a quick bite. But Cheryl's sharp eyes caught her. "Where are you going?"
Yvette paused. "Just going to the kitchen to wash my hands. I'll be right back."
Cheryl waved her off impatiently. "Being the last to the table shows a lack of manners."
"Sorry, Grandma." Yvette's submissive tone made Albert frown, his face darkening. He was about to say something when David, sitting next to him, pulled him back.
"Let's just eat," David muttered without looking up.
Albert sneered, shook off David's hand, and shot Yvette a contemptuous look.
This was the man she was so close to. In front of his Grandma, he couldn't even muster a single word to defend her.'
When Yvette returned from the kitchen, a servant had seated her at the far end of the table. It was her first time having breakfast in such a grand family setting. The table was silent except for the sounds of chewing and clinking cutlery.
Feeling Cheryl's eyes on her, Yvette was visibly uneasy, her movements with the fork a bit awkward. But as a surgeon, her hands were steady, so even in her nervousness, she held the cutlery firmly without making a sound. Seeing no fault to find, Cheryl lost interest and looked away.
After breakfast, everyone gathered around Cheryl, chatting and soaking up the sun. Yvette was about to slip away when James called her over.
"Come here, I need to talk to you," James said. Yvette nodded and followed James to a quiet corner.
James lowered his voice. "Everyone will be with Cheryl all day. Use this chance to keep Albert here and, you know, get close to him. We need that baby soon."
Yvette bit her lip. "It's tough. You know how stubborn Albert is."
"How do you know if you don't try?" James snapped. "Cheryl likes Albert. If you ask him to stay in front of her, saying you miss him, Cheryl will back you up. Lisa and I will also persuade him. He might agree."
Yvette bit her lip harder. She couldn't bring herself to ask Albert to stay in front of everyone. Despite their marriage, their last intimate moment was a bitter memory, and their relationship had only gotten worse.
Taking a deep breath, Yvette said, "I'll find a way to have a baby, but don't push me."
"Yvette, time's ticking," James said, annoyed. "The deal is clear. I give you money, you stay with the Valdemar family, and have a baby with Albert. If he doesn't stay, how can you get pregnant?"
Just a wall away, Albert stood with a dark expression. His fists were clenched, his jaw tight, and his eyes were bloodshot.
