Chapter 239 The Reward for Having a Baby
Nighttime.
The Valdemar family's villa was all lit up. The inheritance stuff was mostly sorted out, and the family finally had some time to chill.
David came back to the Valdemar place, and Cheryl was super happy. She got up to greet him, saying, "David, you're back! Not busy anymore? Why not crash here tonight? Don't go back!"
David smiled gently, "No more overtime for now. I'll stay tonight and keep you company."
As he spoke, he casually took off his suit jacket and handed it to the servant, who hung it up for him.
He glanced around the villa and asked, "Where's Yvette? Not hanging out with you?"
"She's upstairs. Come on in."
Cheryl happily grabbed David's hand and was about to pull him inside when the doorbell rang again.
David turned to look and saw Albert's face, identical to his own, on the screen.
David's brow furrowed slightly, and his smile froze. Cheryl, however, was even more excited and immediately let go of David's hand to open the door herself.
As his hand was suddenly released, David looked down at his now empty hand, feeling a slight tightness in his chest.
Even though he had grown up being overshadowed by Albert, he still couldn't help the surge of emotions at that moment.
Albert walked in, glanced at David indifferently, and handed his suit jacket to the servant.
A servant from the kitchen brought two glasses of water and handed them to the two men, saying, "Have some water."
David pursed his lips, took the water from the servant, and asked Albert, "Why are you back?"
"This is my home too," Albert said in a deep voice. After a pause, he added, "Besides, my wife lives here."
As Albert spoke, his meaningful gaze swept lightly across David's face, instantly changing his expression with the underlying message in his words.
David couldn't help but think of Albert's words from the previous night. His hand paused, but the servant had already let go of the glass.
The glass tipped over instantly, and David quickly caught it, but the water had already spilled onto his expensive custom-made shirt.
Albert sneered and turned to go inside.
David looked down at the wet spot on his shirt, which was becoming transparent and revealing his muscular chest.
The servant beside him was frightened and quickly grabbed a few tissues, trembling as she apologized but not daring to actually wipe the shirt, "I'm sorry, I didn't hold it steady."
David's Adam's apple bobbed slightly as he took the tissues and vigorously wiped the wet spot.
His gloomy expression made the servant even more terrified.
David's face was dark as he blocked out all the sounds around him, mechanically wiping the wet spot.
In this world, there was nothing he couldn't obtain.
Upstairs in the tea room.
Lisa stood to the side, pouring tea for James. She spoke cautiously, "James, I heard Albert came back last night. The noise he and Yvette made while having sex was pretty loud; the servants at home all heard it. Maybe they'll have a child soon. Shouldn't we also have a child as soon as possible?"
James's eyes lit up, and he looked up at Lisa, asking, "Really? It seems Yvette has some skills. She really is the woman who could get Albert to marry her."
Seeing that James didn't bite on her suggestion, Lisa turned back and said, "You mentioned last time that Cheryl still has assets. Even if Albert and Yvette are back in the Valdemar family, we still need our own kid. Honey, you have no idea how badly people talk about me outside."
"Making sure Yvette has a child to influence Albert would be way more effective than us having our own," James said, holding Lisa's hand and giving it a reassuring pat. "It's just that we don't have our own kid. Everything else, as long as I have a share, you won't lack anything. As long as we're doing well, does it really matter if we have our own kid?"
Lisa was getting anxious and was about to keep pushing when there was a knock on the tea room door.
Yvette's voice came through, "James."
"Come in." James's eyes showed approval as he watched Yvette walk over. He stood up to greet her, "Yvette, I heard things with Albert are going well?"
Yvette lowered her eyes, tugged at the corners of her mouth to hide the bitterness in her smile, and said, "It's okay."
They had indeed had sex, but he had given her birth control pills afterward. It was progress, in a way.
"That's great!" James's eyes lit up, and he quickly said, "You should get pregnant as soon as possible. You don't need to worry about anything else."
Lisa added, "Yes, Yvette, since things are good now, you should hurry up and have a kid."
Yvette pursed her lips lightly as she said, "Although Albert was home yesterday, he's not here every day. I don't want the child to grow up in a fatherless home."
James frowned, asking, "So you want me to persuade Albert to come back?"
Hearing this, Lisa's smile faded a bit. She said, "Yvette, we're really hoping you and your man can pop out a Valdemar heir soon. Don't make this hard for us, alright?"
Yvette spoke softly, "I can't just decide on my own about having a kid. If he's not on board..."
"Yvette!" James finally had enough and interrupted her harshly. "Don't make excuses in front of me. As a woman, if you are willing and able to have his child, there will always be a way. Remember our deal. If you're not up for it, I'll sort out the shares accordingly."
Yvette's throat tightened, and she softened her voice, "You misunderstood me."
Yvette raised her eyes, her almond-shaped eyes wide and clear. She explained, "What I mean is, you still need to persuade him. He's been very busy lately, and the work pressure is high, so he's not very enthusiastic about having a kid."
She sighed, "Actually, I married him in the first place because of the kid. If I have a kid, I can stay by his side. Besides, I don't have to worry about the money to raise the kid. I have no reason not to have one. Can you help me convince him? If he's game for a kid, I'll do what it takes to get pregnant quickly so you can stop fretting about us."
Hearing this, James's expression finally softened a bit. He agreed, "Alright, I'll talk to him about it. Cheryl will definitely find a way too. As long as you get pregnant, you don't have to worry about money, and there will be rewards."
Yvette nodded, lowered her eyes, and hid the trace of disappointment in them. She uttered, "Thank you."
Just a wall away, Albert, who had come to talk to James, paused his hand in mid-air, not knocking on the door.
He curled his lips into a self-mocking smile.
